I bought my 5513 in the late 70's, used for diving, bought in Curacao for $330. I used it for many years, I put it away when dive computers came out. I now have an antique Rolex and still runs great.

So true, you see one new BLRO or Panda you've seen them all.....vintage so much more character and takes a true enthusiast to buy vintage. Majority of the people buying new Rolex now are doing so for the investment aspect of it all.

I do love all watches. But I guess lately the hunt/find gets me going

Thanks for posting this. I recently inherited what looks like the same watch from an uncle, but mine has a matte black face with a ghosting dark blue dial. My uncle had it since it was new. The serial number indicates that it was from 1978, but I couldn't find any images of a 1978 dial that matched until I found your video. So I guess it's all original - cool! Under my crystal, mine looks pristine except for the very mildly yellowing of the tritium paint, but the case and crystal are mildly scratched and pocked, like a well-worn tool watch (as far as I know it was his only watch and he wore it every day- it was the watch I'd always seen him wearing throughout the decades). Sad to have lost my uncle, but now have this treasured family artifact.

Yay, congrats, now that's a watch ! Got my 1967 one - that's on riveted bracelet - in 2021. Treasure pieces that you must keep for life. Picking up my 5513 soon at the bank. For now premoon 321 - also 1967 - on wrist. These pieces are unique ones. They are organic, alive because of the aging. Modern ones are dead.

Be careful, when you have your watched serviced by a dealer, those hands may get replaced and come back to you in a little baggie like mine did. These are tool watches. Official Rolex serevice centers bring them back to spec unless you tell them not to. Mine is two years older, but it was officially serviced ever decade or so as it went on >100 dives. So I had to make sure it was still sealed at least once a decade after banging into walls, coral, my desk. Love the watch, no dial or hand patina, just small bags with rubber rings, orig dial, one old plastic crystal, and other parts.

Eric - I enjoyed the video on your new 5513 acquisition. I totally get what you're saying about those vintage timepieces.. each one has it's unique story to tell. I also have a modern watch collection and had a 1967 meters first 5513 but sold it 3 years ago. BIG Fk'n mistake and recently picked up another 5513 (i.e., 1963 open gilt chapter ring, underlined dial, pointed crown guards and long 5 ghost bezel). This one is staying for the duration and will be passed along to my grandson when I am gone. The old Submariner has been glued to my wrist since it arrived and my other watches are crying in the watch box from neglect! Enjoy your 5513... in my mind there's nothing better!!! 😍😍😍

I bought my 5513 in 1969 in Vietnam and wore it for almost a year there. I still wear it today and it looks almost new compared to this one. Paid $125 for it which was half price stateside. Probably would sell for 15 thou or more now. It was manufactured in 1966.

Is that a birth year watch? The newer watches won't oxidize like these. They used to make the hands with stainless steel so they were more prone to oxidation/rust. Rolex switched to white gold so even though they will age, they probably won't develop that 'crust' you are talking about. Congrats on the new watch, awesome!

Great find Eric and nice of you to contrast this purchase with your less in original condition Sub. You don't save that much accepting some polishing and replaced parts, even if done by Rolex, and in the end you'll go down the rabbit hole a bit deeper and will look for a more vintage preserved piece.
