Hi Toni - the bread looks lovely, I close my eyes and try to imagine a whiff of freshly cooked bread. Yes I included the drill adapter because I knew it would be hard to turn by hand. Now Mark can get you your own drill, lol. I’m glad you liked it and hope it gives you many years of service. I noticed one of your subscribers mentioned doing the initial grind on a looser setting, then putting it through again to get the real fine grind - this is an excellent idea - when we were young that is exactly what we would do when grinding wheat berries for our mom. It helps to save on wear of the grind stones and crank.

congrats on your new Wonder Mill Jr. I found that if you run your wheat berries through on a looser grind stone settings and then take the whole thing and grind it through on a tighter setting and then once again grind it all through on a tightest setting that you can do, it's easier on your arms and the machine. People have stressed and broken their hand cranked machine and stones by putting them on the tightest setting first. I found that tightening it down incrementally causes less stress on the machine and the stones.

Ohhh, one more suggestion, if you have an old pillow case or a large plastic bag, or something like that, you may want to cover your Wonder Mill with it. It keeps the dust and things that fly about the house out of the chamber, screw and the stones. Just like covering a sewing machine, serger, or any other machine that you don't want 'things' to fly into. We have cats, so we have to cover ours up to keep the flying cat hair out of it.

Congratulations on your new mill. THANK YOU Harriet for your kindness! Looks like you're going to have fun experimenting with whole grain breads along with a host of other items. A FWIW.... You may want to order separate stones for coffee and spices, as you may not want those flavors to combine with the next grain that you grind. Tip: Try a coarse grind first. The hard part. Then, pour the results back into the mill and re-grind to get the desired result. Also make sure that if you use a drill, use one of good quality. And *take your time* . Generally, electric drills aren't really designed for long continuous use. They can run hot and fail, if pushed too far. Especially the smaller and least expensive ones. I'm looking forward to seeing your upcoming (I'm sure) experiments with your new mill. Enjoy the journey, my friend. God Bless.

This looks lovely. It reminds me of that book, The Long Winter, by Laura Ingalls, in which her Ma used a coffee grinder to turn wheat berries into bread during a winter that snowed them into their tiny house until the end of May. They had to twist up hay to make the "logs" to heat the house and cook the bread. I have long thought that if I bought a wheat grinder it should have a manual option. How was the bread?

@@HerHomesteadSkills Thank you. It’s a learning curve for me, too, and I’ve also been using the hard red. I recently ordered some other grains but they haven’t arrived yet so I haven’t tried them. I’ve been looking at a lot of videos and the site I found most helpful is Grains & Grit, this video in particular….kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4qblqCultCsqc0. The young woman who’s channel it is, gives lots of concise, practical info and does very good demos. She has info on just about every aspect of using fresh grains. Another source of good info is Bread Beckers, also on KZbin, but those are very long….great info, full teaching classes, and not just bread, but long. I like the first channel better because the subjects are shorter and more targeted, although the Grains & Grit lady credits at least some of her knowledge to Sue Becker…the rest is experience. I’m quite excited about this new endeavour, but I don’t have a mill yet. I’ve been using my vitamix to grind and I’m probably not getting as fine a grind as I would on a mill.

For a lighter loaf of bread try adding vital wheat gluten to your flour. You will also need a bit more water to your recipe and let it proof longer. The flour takes a little longer to absorb the liquid. There is a book you can get on how to bake with fresh milled flour. Let me know if your interested in it. I use a vitamix to grind my grain. I use the dry canister it’s extra. The hand mill is great if the grid goes down. It’s good to have. Kindest Regards

Obviously no electricity needed. I'm wondering if they are still available?

HA! you just reminded me of how I used to scrape off the old wax, apply a fresh coat, and use a buffer to get a nice shine on the living room oak floor!! this was a weekly chore too.

Oh my word yes! I remember waxing the floors. Chores used to be so labor intensive but also the houses smelled so good with the lemon oil on the wood furniture. Wax on the floors, and we were healthier because of good homemade food and pushing that sweeper. Lol 👩‍🌾💙💙💙 Thank you both for a trip down me,Roy lane. God bless.

Just looked into the price and that's a whopper! I just bought one for under $50. I hope it actually works now. I may return in after seeing this. I wonder if mine will even have different grinding levels like fine, med, large.

If you got one of those Corona type grainmills, you grind it with several passes. 1st pass cracks the grain, 2nd pass grinds it course, 3rd pass grinds it fine. NEVER tighten the grinding plates up and try to make flour in one pass. You can damage them and end up with metal shavings in your flour. Always take your time and it makes it easier to turn if you do it the right way.

Consider a Grainmaker brand. More expensive but better mill

@@HerHomesteadSkills Hubby said he would get me one when we get paid. We are on a fixed income so I hope we can still get one by then. What sold me on it is that I can make peanut butter. We eat a lot of peanut butter.

@@SandcastleDreams ok! Thank you so much! I had no idea how these things worked and I just bought it because it was good looking for the price. Think I'll return it though. It has some BAD ratings. I didn't even check that. Had no clue metal shavings could get in. Some people in comments said that they have to pass 5 pounds of grain through it to wear the metal things down and stop the metal shaving from getting in the food. Thanks so much for that tip because I probably would of tried to do it on the very finest grind to get it through in one grind. Much thanks!

Hi Toni!, You didn’t say if the bread tasted as good as it looked. Don’t know if this will help but instead of grinding on its finest level, why can’t you make it in multiple passes each time making it finer.
