The Carol Burnett Show launched "Mama" and gave us some wonderful moments...but to me...this was the prize. My original edit of the "Sorry" episode,
with a blooper segment added to flesh it out. Carol and Vicki Lawrence at their BEST!

Vicki at the top of her game 😜😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 She was so afraid to "upstage" Carol until her hubby (Al Schwartz???) talked into it. I think he said "Get her!" And Oh boy did she ever. This had to cement the bond with not just Carol but the whole team 💕💕💕

Even though the show didn't air "live", I love that they kept the unscripted things like this in the final product that aired. The show had a great, hilarious cast that was always trying to crack each other up, and that was part of the magic of the show.
@BeazleyStudios

They always recorded two shows, the dress rehearsal which was the "perfect" take and then they would do the Friday take where they could do a bit more of the ad libs, prop gags, and just let the cast have fun (especially Tim Conway).
@WRMineo
@WRMineo 12 жыл бұрын
Vicki was so often a "victim" of everyone's ad libs and antics, it was really cool to watch her pull one off herself every now and then. Rarely did she need more than a one-liner to seal a scene (Conway's elephant story lol) so this is a treasure!

I still say the pilot light and the windmill splinters are 2 of the funniest lines I've ever heard.
@Makemba007
@Makemba007 4 жыл бұрын
It seems I saw something where they said that those lines were ad libbed by Vicki Lawremce, which is why Eunice said "that's a new one Mama" and which is also why she ends with saying "if you got any more of them, you better use them now," hence another reason as to why Carol Burnett couldn't stop laughing. This show was classic! I also loved the Charro's Mama skit. I used to stay up late at night with my mother, watching this show. I LOVED IT!

There's a batshit crazy family like that in every neighborhood. We had a family from Scotland across the street when I was a kid in Massachusetts. I remember one day the husband running out of the house to his car, with one shoe on, and the wife throwing dishes at him out if a window. Similar scene's played our like that 3 or four times a year. She had good aim, would have been a champ at Frisbee golf. They moved away in the early 70s and we went back to watching TV for entertainment.

What makes this sketch comedy gold in my opinion is that the lines were delivered in that "Mama voice". It's that voice along with the perfect delivery that nails the scene...plus the long pauses where Carol tries to keep her composure...

Anyone who's ever done theater work knows exactly why Carol couldn't afford to look directly at Vicki during this sketch. Sometimes choosing a focal point above, below, or to the side of the face of the person you're acting with is the only hope either one of you has of getting through the scene without completely losing it. Sometimes (as here) it's a funny line; sometimes it's the other person's face that simply strikes you silly. Either way, you HAVE to find a way to cope.
