Vicki Lawrence gave a lengthy interview where she covered that day on the set. There had been a pre-rehearsal meeting and Carol wanted everybody acting right so they could get their takes on time. There was a full set dress rehearsal and Tim told a story about an elephant with a dwarf trainer and after the meeting earlier it was Carol who could not keep it straight. Then there was a break where you could eat something and do last minute prep before the take, and this is when the director came in and gave them scene notes. Vicki knew exactly what Tim was doing... The director came in with set notes and said the elephant joke was changed. Tim had rehearsed with the elephant and the dwarf, but for the take they changed the joke to the siamese elephants... Vicki had already decided before she stepped on the set for that take to get Tim.

I'm with ya, been battling a depressive more disorder since I was 7. Didn't finally get treatment until 23, and I've been _very_ lucky! It's only come out of remission once in those 29 years. Any distraction, anything that can get us out of our heads, is a weapon we can use against this illness, even if only briefly. Keep fighting, sister! (For the rest of you: fighting your own malfunctioning amygdala is exhausting. Until your neurochemistry stops misbehaving, your emotions are running amok, completely disconnected from reality. Trying to ignore that "emotion-noise" in your head takes active effort, but that "emotion-noise" doesn't get tired and doesn't stop. That is why getting outside our heads, having an external distraction, is a weapon: it's a much lower effort way of ignoring the "emotion-noise".)

There is a backstory to this according to Vicky Lawrence. She was forewarned by Carol Burnett that Conway had this story cooked up. Vicky was often the butt of Conway’s shenanigans. While Vicky was in makeup, her makeup artist told her to “Go get him” and she did. The “asshole” comment was omitted from the CBS broadcast, but the clip was repeated uncensored a number of times. Lawrence said the residuals from those clips on Dick Clark and other shows paid her a fortune.

@@kellylaliberte548 I lose it on "they had to shoot the elephant" and later when Tim trots out the monkey. I've seen Vicki's account of this sketch (and great closer by her) but I would have loved to hear Dick Van Dyke's account as well. The timing is what really made it. Tim Conway knew exactly when to start back in after the pauses.

You can tell Carol is loving it as much as the audience is. She had many chances to start the dialogue again and get on with the sketch, but she just let Tim keep doing his thing, knowing he was spouting out comedy gold. This cast worked so great together! 😂😂😂

The backstory on this skit is amazing. The first elephant story was for the daytime show and Tim changed it up on the cast for the Nighttime show. So, that's why Carol just lowered her head cuz she knew something was coming that they weren't gonna be able to handle. It's amazing.

The smile on Tim's face when he said he saw the siamese elephants at the freak show says it all.He knew he had them right where he wanted them.And Vicki Lawrence,God bless her,she took the setup and in one line brought it all together to cap off one of the best scenes of the Carol Burnett Show.

Actually there’s video where she says her answer was spontaneous. She says Carol told them all not to crack up, that it was important to Carol for everyone to keep a straight face. And it ended up being Carol who laughed the most. So when they finally got to Vicki’s line she just blurted out what she was thinking.

Tim Conway had a profound way of improvising as he went along with a skit, and as Carol Burnett once related, he rarely stayed on script. He had masterful comedic timing and it was always appreciated when he would catch his cast mates off guard and prompt them to burst out in laughter with the rest of us. He was a rare talent.
@ciabattatom521 Жыл бұрын
Trying to avoid laughing at what he "actually" says is hard enough. I can also imagine thinking and worrying, while already failing to desperately struggle to stay in character, that "this is Tim Conway - what is this man going to put me through by saying next?"
