My Oseberg Viking Tent

This time I set up my Oseberg Viking Tent for the first time. I got it from a company called: Matuls in Poland. It's a great and very durable tent that I'll be using for overnighters sometime in the future. I'm making some food and coffee...and just enjoying the day together with Cornelius.

I fell in love with that style of tent at a medieval festival about thirty years ago, but they are prohibitively expensive here, and as you have discovered, pretty heavy. Great method for making the end flaps come together. Another fine video. Thanks.

That's a very good tent with plenty of room.I like the design. I think in older times. Your ancestors would have just carried their tents to different hunting & foraging locations & made new poles at different locations & just left them there hidden . So they would not have at to carry to much weight if it was a long journey. I think that they would of been very prepared for the journeys they would of probably had poles & possibly some cooking equipment & other stuff at their best hunting grounds. This is why sometimes people find old stuff in unusual places hidden for hundreds of years. It would of been a great moment in time to live I think.

Looks great Tom. I have an old cotton tent from the 80s. It weighs a ton and takes up most of the car boot but the smell inside it when it's set up is awesome. Nothing else like it. Will you be joining the re-enactment community or taking part in the Viking fairs you brought us to on your travels? I could also see you getting your needle and thread out and adding a stove jack to it as well. Wish you all the best to enjoy it. See you soon bro.

I bought a 17th century soldiers tent from the same place for the use of living history that i do in the English Civil War Society amazing bit of kit it only took 7 days to come aswell and its also made of linen it was also a very good price i also made my own tent poles 2 uprights and one ridge pole with steel sleeves i also had to waterproof mine aswell

I love the tent! As a long time tent camper, that one looks like it will last for many years. I really like the front closure and that there is a wooden frame all around. Like you, I prefer the uprights facing each other. Your cooking set up never fails to amaze me and when you “spike” your coffee, I always wait for you to wink at us lol🐝❤️🤗

I can't get over how beautiful your gear is. The tent, the leather flag, the lantern is absolutely gorgeous, the basket, leather bag canteen, your sword and shield, even the ropes and tent pegs look good lol it's all so beautiful. it's funny I was going to say the only thing you're missing is a sheep skin and then not five seconds later you pull out the wool blanket and sheep skin.

I really like the Seax knife with the thick spine, that you used to split firewood and cut the chicken meat with. Is that a creation of yours? I also like the new camp tent, it is very nice. Tom👍👍 Authentic Viking period tent and complete set up. Wonderful piece of gear to have, I'm sure you're proud to display it and actually use it for camping like so many did centuries before us. Maybe a little too heavy for backpacking but canoe or car camping..perfect. Cornelius was feeling the heat like you and loving the shade in the tent. Beautiful spot there, grassy and flat with forest all around. Meal looked tasty and signature Cimbrer coffee😉was mandatory. Great video, well filmed as always, thanks for the trip. See you next time. Ive been watching your channel for awhile and i can't believe it took me 11 months to find this video. Anyway, i made one of these tents. I saw people selling them for about $800 and i was able to make it for about $200. I loke how easy it is to set up when you have to do it by yourself. It is very wood heavy, so transporting it can be an issue if your car doesn't have a roof rack. Still this kind of tent can put up with some pretty abusive weather and keep you dry.

Tom so cool! It would be neat to see it with a stove jack. I know that isn't really time period accurate, but that little hut could be extremely comfortable, even in winter, with a heat source! If you ever have a desire to paint this tent (with vertical stripes--- I dread to think of anything else) and you are less concerned with historically correct paint--- I recommend stretching the canvas on a nice closely mowed lawn, soaking it thoroughly, allowing it to dry to a fully moistened state, and painting it with a high-quality latex exterior house paint thinned 2 parts water lo 1 part paint. The paint will penetrate the canvas and fuse with the fibers, waterproofing it to a degree. Paint the whole tent--- even the white stripe (after the colored stripes have dried, of course). Watch the paint move through the fibers by capillary action: underpaint to your lines (drawn with hard pastel): let the paint move out to your lines by itself. Your canvas will be heavier, but will last for many more years. The effect will be of an instant antiqued look--- organic--- as with a watercolor painting. As the canvas and paint dry overnight, re-moisten the canvas daily as you move through the project in stages. Plan for clear summer weather, or the thunder god may add his hand to your work.

After watching a couple of these videos a couple of years ago,i made a tent from some 2x4s and an old lumber tarp as a playhouse for grandkids. Daughter uses it for storage of yard stuff in winter. Works very well.

Now that's a tent one doesn't see every day! They just don't make em like that anymore. What do you estimate the weight, And the set up time at? Nowadays you just have to take the tent out of the bag an it basically sets itself up 😁 and only a few ounces.... Thanks for taking us along with you guys.... 🍻
