You posted a link to a bracket that was specially for Canon 800mm. When I tried to order one for myself the site took my credit card info but never told me if the purchase was a approved or not. Do you think that has anything to do with the hacking ?

Great setup. I have a small suv also; I also got the same Falken tires you have and love them. One thing you didn't mention: they're tougher than a regular (cheap) OEM tire a lot of makers put on their rig. A tiny foreign object can puncture that OEM tire, so even adding a small measure of toughness and rigidity is a huge help when going offroad. Well done!
@BrentHall
@BrentHall Жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim! I actually did talk a lot more about that, but the video was getting really long, so that was one of many parts I completely cut out. It certainly should never be understated how important good tires are though!

I have a spare set of OEM 1st or 2nd gen forester XT wheels wrapped with BFG K02's but never use them. In the UK 🇬🇧 we don't have trails and land to explore like you guys in the USA or OZ because all the land belongs to farmers or privately owned. Such a pain... the trails that are available have been destroyed by the bobtail LR discovery's or Defenders and the ruts are too deep. Shame... if anyone in the 🇬🇧 UK would like my spare set of wheels then answer this message if OK by you. Cheers

Nice build! I have a 2021 Crosstrek Sport and I live in it when I'm on the road. Love to see the ideas folks come up with. I hear you say 'We' so you must travel with spouse or the like .. I am single and the Trek works well .. I took off my roof rack and aero bars as they were costing me almost 4 mpg! Just spooned on a set of 225/65 17" BFG KO2's .. liking them alot! Had Toyo All Terrains but a sidewall puncture left me no options but to replace all tires. No tent for me .. at 77 my tent years are over .. my bed in the Trek is really comfortable .. for one person. I subscribed so I can follow your travels! 🤠

what about flat tyre situation ? Crosstek forces its owners to be more outdoor activity however one sharp rock can have a potential to turn everything upside down ... "Spare tyre is more important than roof rack" said the old man ( because here in europe crosstecs has no spare tyres)

I still carry the donut spare as it's close to size but I now have a can of Tire Inflator .. a big tube of Slime and I have all the tire plugs know to Man! I always have my compressor with me to inflate after I air down so no problem there. I'm counting on the BFG KO2's with the 3 ply sidewall to be a much tougher tire .. have my third set on my Ford Explorer and never had a puncture in over 150K miles .. Ford's got 268K miles on it. 🤠

In all honesty, you are doing exactly that what I want to. Wild camping to do full time photography, and maybe a chanel. Recently I bought a Peugeot 2008 1.6 from 2013, and the first ting I thougth about was changing the tires for all terain, just like you. The only problem here in the Netherlands is, the law no longer allows us to do the wild-camping anymore, only at costy-camping parkings with other campers. I have seen a nice tent with a sleeping cabin which, closed, it is like a black dark room, so perfect to do photo-editing. So I need to think here. So a great video, I loved it!

I'm only 5'10" and found trying to sleep in the back of an XV horrible.. the length is technically okay but the lack of headroom is a killer, it makes getting in and out of the thing a massive chore. My alternative is to clear out the passenger seat and lean the seat all the way back. Not an award winning sleep but I can do it for about a week before body parts start to hurt. Mine is 100% stock and it's capable enough to get me to 95% of the scenery and trailheads I want to get to. Of course it can't rock climb but rigs that can do that come with their own downsides so we all gotta pick and choose.
@BrentHall
@BrentHall Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's definitely a tight fit for me too, and not the most comfortable, though I do have ground tents for whenever I feel like setting them up and stretching out a bit. Overall the fact that it's paid off and gets 30+ mpg and can go just about anywhere I need it to are all worth it over the tight fit for me.

I have the exact same car, and I was wondering how you made the wood trunk insert and what type of wood it is. I love this idea
@BrentHall
@BrentHall 3 ай бұрын
I just measured out the trunk space and made a cardboard stencil to make sure the box fit right. The wood is 1/4" ply with some 1" pine, and the slide out was some fancier shelf/counter type stuff. I wanted to to be as light as possible since this car is on stock suspension and can't handle much weight, so it's not as sturdy as a lot of stuff out there, but it can easily handle all the gear I loaded on top, just wouldn't handle a person's full weight or anything like that. Being light weight also makes it really fast and easy to remove when I need the cargo space for normal stuff.

That info would help me so much; I have almost exactly your setup (or will). Thanks for the video. I love your style.
@BrentHall

I just went to Wal-Mart and bought a couple of standard cargo straps, with the metal tighten parts. You can get them at any major store or online for a a few dollars. As for the cross bars, I just have the stock Subaru Aero bars, and they work fine, though now wanting to put more stuff on the roof, I kind of wish I had some longer ones from Thule or something like that.

Thank Paul, I'm glad you liked it! I have ground tents too, and a pretty big 6 person one if I want to really spread out or the family is with me. Mostly though, the car is much easier and safer. Most of the time I'm either out for just a night or two, or I'm on the road a bit longer but moving every night, so dealing with ground tents becomes more of a chore. Also, most of the places I stay are usually quite remote and are in bear, wolf, moose, mountain lion territory, so car wins again for a little more safety.

What? How do you get by without the $15,000 diamond plate, slide-out, Chuck wagon cooking system? Really, this was refreshing to see functional, minimalist overlander. Some people spend money like a drunk sailor on their overlanding rigs. In fact a lot of rigs are so modded they can't be used for daily driving and get terrible MPG. Overlanding has become a money pit of unnecessary gear. You are smart, save big bucks on fuel, and can go almost anywhere the Jeeps can go. And when you get back home you have stock rig for city driving. Nice tutorial!
@BrentHall
@BrentHall 8 ай бұрын
Hey, that cooking system sounds legit! 🤣 I did recently pick up a rooftop tent... it's not a fancy hardshell one though. Those were too expensive and wouldn't fit on my little roof. I made a video about it. Even with it on there I still get all over 20 mpg, which I definitely enjoy. 😁🏕

Just keep that time belt serviceable and they go forever. I did build a 2001 MItsubishi Montero XLS for Overlanding. No back seats and just a composite floor platform. I feel you. I'm 6'1" and I can't stretch out in there either. That's a big reason I have since picked up a rooftop tent. Made all the difference for me.

The reason Subaru appeals to me is because going off road isn't the point, it's just a way of getting to the point(seeing/photographing cool stuff). I think there are a lot of people for whom going off road IS the goal, and for them a Jeep/etc. may make sense.
@BrentHall

Yeah, same for me. I'd love to have an off road vehicle, but I spend way more time on road than not, or at least on dirt roads that the Subaru can handle just fine.

... a means to a destination. Which is what Subaru shows in their commercials; ppl getting to their destination and doing stuff, not necessarily doing stuff with the car, such as rock crawling or river fording

Have you had any reliability problems with your 2013 Subaru?
@BrentHall
@BrentHall Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've had a few issues over the years, for sure, but everything's been dealt with and overall it's still running strong with no plans on upgrading anytime soon. I had the AC compressor go out on me in 2016, which was thankfully under warranty, so no charge there, but sucky to deal with on a trip in the summer time heat of the sw. The biggest issue I've had was having to have the valve body replaced earlier this year. Apparently this is more common than I realized and it's not a cheap fix. Luckily a very good friend of mine is a Subaru mech and he did the fix for me for just the cost of parts, which he somehow got for like $500, so that was extremely helpful. He also just replaced my highly worn out and slightly broken control arms and front sway bar links (but those were all OEM and almost 10 years old now, so they had a good run, lol). Also, in typical Subaru fashion, the car definitely burns a bit of oil these days, as I have almost 150K miles on it now. I'd say I go through an extra qt every 1K miles or so. No leaks though. Other than that, the car is running really well and still gets me everywhere I need to go. Still getting about 28-30 mpg even with the roof box, so that's decent, especially with the slightly bigger tires. Having this car has been a huge help for my business and life overall, but after almost 10 years with it, I just don't think I'll ever buy a car with a CVT again. That is my one and only major complaint about it.

which model of roof box is this?
@BrentHall
@BrentHall Жыл бұрын
I'm fairly confident it's the Force model, either the small or medium, I can't remember. I put the link in with all my other camping/overlanding links in the description, but the one I have is like 10 years old, so new ones don't look anything like mine.

I'm planning on doing a part 2 video for this soon, since I've made a few decent changes to the rig and gear since this came out. Since my wife has been joining me on more trips lately, I got her a portable potty and a pop up privacy tent for it, which has been working very well so far. The gazelle pop up shelter is definitely heavy, but still worth it for the added shelter and space, at least for us.

Any car, free & clear, is a luxury car! I've owned six jeeps. And they're great, but 95% of the time, even off road, a Subaru with good AT tires is, in my opinion, all you'll need... It's economical, and thrifty. You'll have just as much fun.

Crosstrek is just what Subaru called it in North America, everywhere else it was the XV for the first few years. Unless you meant why did I get a crosstrek, to which I would say because it was affordable and mostly capable and reliable for my needs at the time.
