With those chips I've had much more success sticking to a flux paste and using a SUPER THIN coating on the board itself. I'm talking a light tap on a finger and then rubbing it over the pads so that it's barely noticeable. It'll still want to move upon melt but it usually stays in place. Using liquid flux or even a touch too much of either sends it swimming all around that area, lol.
@TheCod3r
@TheCod3r 3 жыл бұрын
Yep they're a nightmare at times, I think it's partly down to how small the balls are. I might start pulling a few components off around the immediate outer area just to give room to hold the chip with tweezers lol
@DannyWilliamH
@DannyWilliamH 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheCod3r That's probably it as it's really hard to grasp how small and packed together most chips on a Switch board are. That side is especially populated so moving some may actually work. It would be funny to see and especially so if it did help a bit because I really hate changing those out haha

You area very patient man, I would have knocked about the caps etc around the chip almost for sure, and redone those after, probably with a tip iron. I get rage when smd caps and resistors start scooting around from the hot air :-P surfing the flux wave. My relationship with hot-air is a love-hate one, I end up doing everything I can with a fine small tip iron and only use hot air for BGA... But I do love seeing the BGA snap into place when it flows, that's what I go by and it's never failed me, set the chip 0.1mm off, slow air, a bit over temp and slowly heat up, then look for the snap when the solder flows and pulls the chip in...

@@TheCod3r Yes I'll try a reflow first, tbh the switch in question has a error code too sometimes, ends in 002 (can't remember exactly but quite generic) going to look at m92 and the joycon rails (only time I've ever had a orange screen and it was related to a blown cap/resistor near there. not sure it's charging properly judging from the sellers comment's, but for £105 including 2 joycons a charger and dock I thought it was worth the punt. and if it goes wrong it's a lesson isn't it. take care.

Just fyi, on most boards, there are alignment markings to indicate where balled chips should be set before soldering to the board. If you look at the top left of the chip, you can see a tiny square on the board, if he aligned the chip to that marking the first time, it wouldn't have been too far to the left and he wouldn't have had to resolder a second replacement chip.
@TheCod3r

I did use the alignment marking but it dropped and moved too far out. Completely my fault, but I don't think I could've stopped it happening to be honest lol

I’m not going to lie, I was hoping you’d have to reball haha. I’m learning and recently reflowed a couple 2DS XL ram IC’s because they were crashing when slightly squeezed, and I narrowed it down to the ram. I can't really help you out but, I had a switch lite once, water damaged and I cleaned it up and it booted fine. Thought everything was well but then I noticed when totally powered off the battery would discharge. and if you charged it again it would crash on the switch logo, rarely I could get it to boot in the dashboard, but when I did, and left it in sleepmode it behaved normally. Had this on my shelf for around 6 months, and decided to ultrasonic it again. this worked for around a day. HAD enough of the switch so I used Phil's video and reflowed the CPU, and I haven't had a problem since.

@thecod3r what would you be inspecting if your switch connected to 5Ghz Access Points only, but gave you a had time if you tried a 2.4Ghz one? Also, whenever downloading a game, signal strength gets crazy unstable, as the bar icon switches from 2 to 3 and then 4 bars until the download is finished? I've tried a new pair of antennas from a spare switch, but symptoms are the same.
