Shadow Realm has like dark monsters inside of it. Showed one scene of Bakura having to fight a grim reaper monster in the realm.

The Yu-Gi-Oh dub is a censorship of a censorship. The Japanese anime was censored from the manga, which was way more horrific, even when it reached the card game section. And the dub censored the Japanese anime even further. The Shadow Realm is basically just where people go after losing a Shadow Game. But in the manga and Japanese version, losers are either killed or suffer excruciating agony. A good example was Pandora (Arkana in the dub) who used blades to send the loser to the Shadow Realm, but in the manga and Japanese version, they were saw blades that would slice off the loser’s feet.

2:53 Man, brings back memories of the Agarest series; where you could choose which girl to breed with across 2-3 generations in one game, with the player controlling the original character, then their son, then their grandson. I also liked that about some games such as Golden Sun, which while it didn't allow fan-pairings, the sequel did directly involve their children. The "Shadow Realm" was dub censorship. Depending on the character, they either killed or were psychologically tortured. I do believe a shadow realm like place does exist in universe "Yami no sekai" (world of darkness). I think that's where they go during a Shadow game. Basically it did exist, but only 1 or 2 people actually ended up there AFTER a duel.

So, there's Games of Darkness. And they vary in effect, but are primarily like Genjutsu. They also amplify the darker aspects of you, and if you cheat, you get punished instantly. You can also be put in a coma(Mai, who was losing her mind, and Kaiba who had to rebuild his heart). That's essentially what the Shadow Realm is. That said, 4Kids made the Shadow Realm all purpose, so a lot of times, it was just 'person is gone to die'? Now they're going to the Shadow Realm, Jimbo. Lumas and Umbra were just gone to shatter the glass so you fall to your death(now it's the Shadow Realm) The buzzsaws about to cut off Yugi's legs, was just a buzzsaw(now it sends you to the Shadow Realm) Aaaand Bakura sent Bonz and his friends to Hell(Shadow Realm in the dub)... as censorship to the manga, where he just murders them.
