It's quite sad that many west African parents have a very narrow minded perspective on life. The truth is that not every one that studies law, graduates and gets a top notch job. Many spend years working in under paid and overworked and underemployed jobs. But as long as our parents can boast to their cultural club members that their child is a 'lawyer' then it's good for them. Over 70,000 people are in awe of your creative skills. If that is not successful then I don't know what success is.

I just dealt with my parents on this issue!! I'm currently in my last year of university finishing up my accounting degree. I hate it so much. I'm not happy at all. They chose the 5 year program for me (Bachelor's and Masters together) for me my first year because I did not know what I wanted to do. I switched to the regular 4 year degree and my mom lost it. Dad not so much. My second year I started freelancing and realized I loved makeup and wanted to post KZbin videos for forever. Mom and dad thought it was unsafe for me to be online and that makeup was a silly hobby. So they said no. During Summer 2015, I was taking online courses and posting on Instagram a lot. My dad saw I had nothing to do after my schoolwork and suggested I do KZbin as something to do. It infuriated me because I had lost motivation for it because they said no so many times. My dad bought me a camera and I started uploading videos a year ago. He, my mom, my older brother, and my sister bad-mouthed me so much for the first few months. I cried a lot but kept pushing because I knew KZbin was for me. My little brother was very supportive since he has gaming channel and knows that it's like. Over time they saw that more and more people were watching me, I was getting invited to events, and I was being contacted by brands. I recently went to New York for Generation Beauty. They let me leave university to attend. I don't know how I got away with that. My mom went with me and she saw how truly happy I was being a Content Creator. I was smiling and laughing all day. I only do that if I'm genuinely happy. My dad and I made a deal that I could do whatever I want after I finish university in May. So I'm pursuing KZbin full time. It's scary but it brings me a lot of joy. Just keep pushing, Jennifer. You can do more than you think if you put your mind to it. Show your parents that their dreams for you are wrong and only you know what's best for you. God has a plan for you and I know for sure it will be and exciting one. Thanks for this video ❤❤❤

Girl, I'm in the same boat! My mother is forcing to go to college, it's my last year and I hate it as well. They are so strict, she won't let me drive and doesn't want to take me. I've been taking so many classes online. One I'm done, I'm going to get a job at a make-up counter and if they don't like it I'm moving out. My dad also won't let meget a job but constantly gets onto me becase I have so much work. It's so upsetting! you would think your parents would be there for you and encourage u but sadly this is untrue. I feel you. Goodlcuk!

Before I graduated from high school, the class was told by our teacher that when we turn 18 we will be on our own. I was fortunate at 18, I decided to go to college and my parents were fully supportive of it. My mother gave me a total of about $800 to buy clothes for school. I had so many cute skirt outfits with shoes to match. She opened up a checking account and allow me to fly back and forth to school. I feel bad that I didn't finish at that school, and my mother didn't make me feel guilty that she spent all that money supporting my dream. I could never thank her enough for believing in one of my many dreams.

I'm Asian, and my father disapproves my dream of being an environmental engineer because in his logic, the field is for men and I will regret crawling into dirty sewers to collect data. It's an emotional whiplash whenever I talk to him about my future, because he would eagerly help me with my goals and plans but would immediately talk shit when I mention civil/environmental engineering. Since he's a persuasive person and used to be an engineer, I can feel myself slowly giving up on my dream and do something he wants, like being a doctor. But there's nothing I want more than being able to help the public *and* the environment, so I'm feeling very trapped. Thank you for this video. It doesn't bring my motivation back completely, but it helps, and I feel loads better now. Stay hydrated and take care of yourself!

This hit so close to home! I'm actually a doctor who just graduated, but I enjoy doing makeup and between graduating and taking the boards, I started getting more into freelancing. I made really good money from it, but of course, my father being Nigerian, said its derogatory for a "doctor" to be doing something like makeup. It took everything out of me not to get disrespectful, but like you said, mothers are more understanding and she brought it up to him that it is possible to do multiple things. I can go on and on but I'll end it on the note that do what makes you happy!. Love your videos!!!!

jen i feel you 100%. Nigerians are really set in there ways and the way many left poverty / are held high in the community due to professional jobs, that's why doctors and lawyers are the hoped path for your parents to 'let' you do your degree I think is a big deal. my dad went mad when I said I wanted to study business.. I didn't in the end. people are hard to please because if it's not job it's relationship, then marriage then kids, then how your kids are behaving. I turned 25 a few weeks ago n I am being asked about a bf. wasn't it these same people that drummed in don't bring Belle home and get good grades. I got a 1st in my degree and a distinction in my masters. i now work for a top 5 firm and currently studying for my professional exams but I keep getting asked about a boyfriend. I went crazy the other day, people as so so hard to please when you've ticked one box for them they are moving onto the next. I said all of that to say well done to you for staying true to yourself and your dreams, your success speaks volumes and confirms there is not just one path!!

My parents don’t support cosmetology. I really want to do it. I don’t have the money. I’ve never had a real job. Applied never got the jobs. I am now in college. I feel really stuck cause in my heart I know I want to do makeup. My parents don’t support it. Also I am not saying our situations are the same but it sucks to not be supported as a creative artist.

I HOPE EVERYONE READS THIS , YOUR HATERS , FOLLOWERS, EVERYONE! I dont know what planet you're all living in but people are begging to escape the typical 9-5 job! Trust me you're so lucky gurl, feel blessed because you have the ability to stay home whenever you want, plan your own work schedule and generate income! Who doesn't want that, and the creative and beauty world is a hot game now, people who have degrees and worked in big firms wish to be self-employed and live the life they want, but they can't because mostly starting up is hard and they end up being miserable and unhappy. Whoever looks down on you , ignore them and be proud of yourself! this is your way to be a successful business woman, running your own beauty business or whatever you desire. Once your money is flowing they will all come after you :D x Love you !

But to know that this is something your currently facing, I really appreciate this. Its awesome to have your parents blessing, but not having your parents blessing can be difficult. But just remember Jeremiah 29:11, God has a plan for you and that plan will prosper and not harm you, so as long as you remain in God's will, you are set for life. You are going to continue to flourish! 77k subbies isn't easy to achieve, but I know by the Grace of God you will continue to multiply! Love ya!!!

Deep down I believe that everyone wants the approval of their father. I remember telling my parents that I wanted to be a stay at home wife, because homemaking is truly my gift. My family thought I was joking and crazy because I excelled in school and was on college to be an engineer. My mom even had a pastor talk to me about it. lol I pursued engineer and get paid well, and by all standards would be considered successful; however, I find true joy on days like today where I'm home cleaning and making it a peaceful place for me and my husband. Maybe one day it'll be full time :) BTW...not just African parents.

it happend to see your video now so yeah i'm just going to comment, um.. i'm an 14 years olg girl, who have a dream to be a singer (k-pop singer), for k-pop you need to be a trainee in a company and practice ect.. so you need to audition in a young age if you want to become a singer when you're 19yo.. but my parents won't let me do it, and i'm afraid to tell them about how i fell because since i'm a kid i just follow whatever they say without complaining and my grades are good, they want me to become a "doctor". i can't just let them choose for me, i won't succed if i don't like it and i'm really afraid about my future... they won't understand me. You are so lucky to have such parents..

Singing is definitely something cool you can do. I wanted to be a music producer (before it became mainstream popular)...you’re young so you have time..what I would recommend to you kid is that you sing in talent shows, open mics and wherever you can for free. You live with your parents so you don’t have to worry about money, just get out there and sing. When you’re ready do those auditions and hopefully you get a good deal on talent representation. But as an adult (when you hit your mid to late 20s), you want to think about what will come next for you after singing...would you want to start your own talent agency? Would you want to sing at community events like people’s weddings or fundraisers? The rockstar lifestyle has a bunch of ups and downs (relatively more downs than ups) and it will come and go with a blink....you have to think like Beyoncé or let alone the people that manage and run Beyoncé’s career if you want to still be singing in your adult/mid adult years

Jennifer, count up all the people (whether it’s blood or water) that support you and count up the people that don’t....if you have more supporters than people that don’t then you’re doing just fine. It’s very hard to emotionally detach from not having direct parental support in something you love to do. You’re right...the dream wasn’t given to them, it was given to you. You must serve out that purpose and do it as best as you can. Really and to put it honestly. I have Caribbean parents...so I know what it’s like. I freelance DJ and I own a mobile DJ business. Mainly if I’m not on someone’s payroll in my parents eyes it looks like I’m failing. But I make more in my personal endeavors than I do at work. You can’t force or worry about people supporting you, they have to come into it on their own. I can honestly say though, this is the first time that they haven’t supported me in something as they usually would. I remember I came to them about the idea about being an entrepreneur and it was shot down quickly lol. From 2012-2017 I experimented with products and services and the DJ-ing has been reliable thus far. Really I have the support from my church family, my friends, my wife and my older brother. When I put that method aforementioned into action, I realized I will be okay and what I was doing wasn’t a stupid idea. I wish you all my best but please don’t get hung up about wanting your parents support. They have to come into it on their own, you have a good fanbase, and you’re happy. Just stick with those things!

As a character designer /visual development artist after I graduated from Vancouver film school in 2019 while I wanted to start and create my portfolio so that I can get a job easily and get noticed. My parents often try to step me away from my portfolio telling me to give up and just apply without a portfolio because negative people who work in the animation industry but doing technical stuff like vfx and 3D animation who are my parents contacts from family friends who constantly tell my parents it will never happen because concept art is difficult job to get and I am wasting time on just chasing my silly dream and only apply as a 3D animation or a vfx person. This discouraging me and made me depressed and so I overcame it and so I ignored them and worked hard on my portfolio developed it more and started applying for jobs and got freelance gigs,, watch your videos and motivate myself more and find my happiness. But many years later in 2022 I became a senior character designer/ visual development artist(concept artist) in an animation company in Toronto working on an animation feature film collaborating with great people and making friends with positive people and starting to get noticed on Instagram because I was posting personal projects and doing a couple of fan art. Like there is a saying ( IF YOU BELIEVE YOU CAN ACHIEVE ) - Dhar Mann

Hey I grew up with a Hispanic Single mom and lemme tell you, I was forced to take cosmetology. For 3 years instead of using art as a great tool, I had to take that course. I hated the subject, not the people. Slowly but surely I'm gonna apply to all jobs as soon as I can.
