Prestidigitation is highly overpowered in a game that I am in. We played Lost Mines and there’s a bit where the zombies in the crypt will attack anyone not wearing a red cloak. We’ve nicked a handful of cloaks already so we are safe but I used prestidigitation to colour the enemy cloaks blue whereupon they were torn apart by their own zombie guards. The boss of that castle had to use a third level spell slot on Counterspell against my cantrip. In the same game I have used it to both light a bomb fuse from a distance and to snuff one (twice).

In my first (and current) campaign I, A dragonborn fighter/sorcerer multiclass at the time, caused a illusionist's magic to immediately get corrupted in a peanut butter factory by simply using it to flavor one of the machines outputs into like, meatloaf peanut butter or something? then later in the same session helped someone get a item that was related to their backstory by making it look like a sandwich (the illusion that can fit in your palm part of prestidigitation) through a wall due to the fact sight isn't a requirement

I have two great prestidigitation events one I caused myself. My Own: As a Dragonborn Sorcerer me and my party were fighting a mad artificer alchemist in a massive underground chamber beneath a capital city. It was filled with a large amount of vats and chemicals boiling and mixing to create some kind of massive flesh golem. The alchemist was using a floating platform to fight us like a gamer from his chair. Throwing flasks, summoning minions, and making spells through chemical mixtures. He was ranting about his genius through this entire thing. About how he had figured out how to mix the various chemicals and create artificial flesh. I remember a scene from the old Rune Soldier anime where the protagonist peed in a vat of chemicals to disrupt the creation of a dragon golem. But since I could not reach the vat to pee in it I had another idea. So I used prestidigitation to heat up and cool down two different vats of chemicals using the twinned spell ability, the gm approved. The good news is that it succeeded and we ran out of the chamber while the alchemist tried to stop what was going on. The bad news is that the GM rolled a table on what would be created by this sudden shift in temperature and I essentially created a chemical imbalance that led to "a sudden disruptive cascade of alchemical reagents and components" resulting in "An immediate collapse of stability and detonation of waste produce". In simpler words, it became an alchemical dirty bomb. A rapidly expanding mass of alchemical waste erupted through the underground base and the ceiling was blown sky high as an Empire State Building high geyser and sprayed over the entire city above us. It wasn't lethal in itself but the majority of the city became uninhabitable and more than half of the one hundred thousand population gained variation of mutations from coming in contact with the waste. It was pandemonium and civil unrest in the capital for decades until they cleaned up the waste and either fixed or killed all the mutants. The alchemist was turned into goo. But we had to flee the city to not get arrested, tortured, and slowly executed for causing this disaster. So we did not get paid. Leveled up though. Another Player: A wizard goblin in a lvl 4 5e one-shot I was GMing. They were part of a small group of 3. Made up of a gnome rogue, a goblin wizard, and a grung barbarian. They called themselves the Lowcase Gs. The party was hired to kill a mob boss by a relative of a victim. They debate on what to do. And after going through their options and surveying the area they came down with a plan. For four weeks they would go to the mob boss' territory once or twice a week to make a delivery. Every time it would a different member of the group arrived. Disguised as differently dressed and colored gnomes, goblins, grungs, or other races they could fake well enough. And each time they came carrying a basket of cheese, bread, and wine and acting as if they were gifts from somebody who paid them to deliver it to the mob boss. There was some light questioning but the guards accepted the gift. There was nothing wrong about it and it was even a fine vintage and the cheese tasted excellent. They kept this up for a while and on the last day of the fourth week, they got their opening. They were let in by the guards with a fresh basket of goodies and the mob boss himself even accepted it. He admitted to having given the gifts to his various guards and staff members but as nothing had gone wrong and the gifts were of such fine quality he trusted the gift. The mob boss accepted the fine drink and goodies and took a sip and bite of each item with a smile before thanking the delivery boy, it was the gnome who gave him the gift at the time. Disguised as a small dwarf boy. 24 hours later the city was engulfed in a massive turf war and town guard raids as the mob boss and his personal lieutenants all died from overdosing on laxatives. Literally pooping themselves to death. How was this done? The trio was always together even if not obviously. The wizard knew invisibility, the rogue was a rogue, and the barbarian was surprisingly stealthy. One member was always in the small chimney on the roof of the mob boss' home, listening in on him through his personal fireplace having found it echoing nicely with information. While the second would be on a roof on the other side of the street looking into the window to get visual information. They had slowly built up the trust of the mob boss and knew he had voiced intent to accept the next gift days before they gave it to them. So they took their regular load out of cheap wine, freshly baked bread, and highly stinky but tasty goat cheese. And injected the wine and the bread with three vials (18 doses) worth of laxative potions called gut cleansers and the goblin wizard used prestidigitation to make the wine taste fine, the cheese smell nice, and hide the taste of the potion on the bread. A single dose of gut cleanser is enough to remove the content of your intestines. 18 made your gut essentially squeeze itself apart as it tried to empty itself of nothing there, even causing injuries to other connecting tissues and organs. A single dose would start working after around 3-6 hours. 18 doses would start working in 1 hour or less. Luckily, or unluckily. The mob boss shared the goodies with his 3 lieutenants and it took 4 hours until it started working. The party got paid and sold all the goodies they had pickpocketed from the mob boss and his guards for the past 4 weeks. Without looking back the Lowcase Gs left a city in chaos as a massive gang war broke out through their actions. A wonderful group of mad players who worked with me and did not overly metagame beyond some medical knowledge I could have been left without. Nurses are damn scary. Ah the Lowcase Gs, always out and about doing dirty deeds. Or causing dirty ends.

I'm also a dragonborn sorcerer in my current (and only experienced) campaign, although I'm a Fighter (currently 6) / Sorcerer (currently 4) / Paladin (currently 2 for divine smite) due to being level 12 atm, but I multiclassed into sorcerer as early as like 5th level.

My greatest DND moment so far: few years back I was playing a Halfling Arcane Trickster rogue. We had to infiltrate a cultist base to recue some kidnapped townspeople and a McGuffin character. We found a watchtower that overlooked the camp and killed its guards. That got us access to a hidden cave near the middle of the camp. I wa able to sneak in, kill some more guards, free half the townspeople and find the McGuffin guy. I cleared out that section of tents and learned that there were no more hostages in the camp, the rest were in another set of caves. Now we had to deal with around 100 or so cultists and mercenaries. And that's when I discovered their 'Armory'. I was a tent filled with weapons, armor and gunpowder. 10 barrels of gunpowder. I formed a plan. I got some of the party to relocate the gunpowder to one of the large sleeping tents. We stacked them and them we surrounded them with all the weapons. I also added several bags of ball bearings that I had bought. We then stacked a few dead bodies and spilled copious amounts of ale and meat nearby. We them retreated to the cave and I lit the tent with Prestidigitation. When the alarm was raised, the remaining cultists swarmed around tent. They chalked it up to dumbass drunks. And then the gunpowder exploded. Our DM took 20 minutes to tally to destruction. 40 dead outright. 20 more that bled out a few minutes later. We only had to deal with 40 or so and most of them we generally walking wounded. Only about 3 were good to go. Our DM was shocked at the sheer level of chaos I caused.

Prestidigitation is one of those spells that is almost always right to be either banned or made a Level 3 spell. Likewise any enemy who is competent and intelligent would take measure to ensure either they themselves will exploit Prestidigitation and/or are prepared to handle it.

The players showed creative thinking. Time for the D.M. To stop lofting up slow lobs. Bring a creative encounter against them. Use slippery or jagged terrain, darkness, slow, illusions, and shock and awe. You have to test creative players or they will get bored. Smarter monsters are clever, design encounters that way.

Currently playing in a spelljammer campaign where we were facing kobalds and dragonborns with golem bodyguards who were using ballista cannons to level the city we are in. On 2 separate moments prestidigitation became the star of the show. First time, i made it look like a gear had fallen off the cannon as they were loading it, half the kobalds started panicking as the other half were fire the thing, blew themselves up with incorrect ratios of black powder Second time, made it appear as if the cannon had a crack in its barrel and was leaking black powder, the golems saw through the ruse, but it worked great for the kobalds to freak out and allow us players a chance to surprise them

Use Presto to change the color and flavor of purple wyrm poison to look like the target's favorite drink. Easiest assassination ever. I've also used it to survive extreme climates. Walking through a desert? Use presto to keep my clothes at a chilly 40F. Middle of a blizzard? Presto keeps my clothes at a toasty 80F. Bluffing my way past a guard? Presto can make palm size trinkets. A badge is a trinket. And a blank piece of paper can be a writ of purpose from the lord. Shop keeper keeping a close eye on you? Presto makes a noise of breaking glass come from the back room... And it's only a somatic gesture to cast. Pretend to be deaf and have a teammate translate your signs...

while im all for player creativity, wouldnt have allowed any of these at my table as GM and would argue against such improper use as if i was a player. story 1 and 4) oil/alcohol is not a valid target for ignition being not a candle, torch or small campfire story 2) drying is not one of the effects that Pres does, best guess is that you really stretching the clean or soil option story 3) this might work but smell is in an area not on the goblin, possible that the bull would keep chasing the fleeing goblin but equally possible it would circle the area confused as to where the mating scent was coming from

I was still a new player at this point but the party had located a cult underneath a town. The cult was trying to summon the demigorgon underneath the city. Our bard(rip) was singing about our adventure thus far, revealing that we ourselves had witnessed the summoning of the demigorgan just days before. The guard he was telling this to, didn’t believe the story(poor dice roll ) so while the bard was trying to convince the guard, I cast Prestidigitation on myself creating a tattoo of the cult symbol on my forearm. I revealed the tattoo to the guard, telling him that our bard spoke the truth. He believed it. This granted us an audience with the cult leader. After convincing the leader we were allies, we came up with a plan. The dm had made the mistake of giving us guns. We devised a plan that we would just encircle the cult leader and take him out . We show up to the cult headquarters the next day and are like, “hey boss can we talk for a minute?” He agrees and approaches us. We casually surround him. And then we just surprise attack, take our shots. We destroy him instantly and then proceed to eliminate the rest of the cult. We saved the city with Prestidigitation.

The artificer story: That's a good example of a bad DM. If your party has something and you go out of your way to screw them out of using it, you're not a good DM. You're also pretty stupid if you didn't look at that and think "Well, it has an explosive range..Time for people to run away from the explosive!" It's a fairly simple plan, but it does work (idiots, I tell ya.)
