Did you actually spend a long time in the campaign before they tried to kill you off or was it a lot earlier and you have now been in the campaign longer(_edit_ re-read the original story, player totally played for two years, including this campaign) with the new rebooted party? Also, how did the original party actually convince that bard to their side to try to kill you?

I've always said this, Paladins can pretty much do whatever they damned well please so long as they are the right subclass and have the belief. If you believe someone is evil then that (and the right deity) is all you need as a conquest paladin to slay them and any who stand in your way. Paladin's are really cool when done right or they are really dangerous religious zealots when done in a different way that is also right. Btw Oath Breakers are also a thing in 5e and are like anti Paladin/death knights.

@@naginaga8338 first off, it seemed like the player didn't know of the other player's backgrounds. Second off, using your background as an excuse to bully other players is a terrible thing to do. Sure, other PCs can be reluctant and such, but should NEVER turn to such acts done in this video.

@@MythicMachina that's right. I had played a evil wizard in a campaign (more for unethical experiments to really "evil") after my warrior was disintegrated (he was chaotic neutral almost evil). The wizard motivation to help the campaign world was to get revenge against the dragons who destroyed his college and killed his apprentices, he was not a good person to have around, but he was super helpful in many situations. He even didn't keep his undead servants after combat: "All clear? Okay destroy yourselves. I think that the cleric wouldn't like to me keeping a army of yours raised enemies." I even stoped a war! Because? Its will not be useful to me.

I play mostly PF 1e/3.5 D&D, but... has Darkness *ever* been an Evil-aligned spell? It's not even Necromancy, it's Evocation (ie, same school as Fireball). Even then, there's tons of Necromancy spells that aren't evil.

Drejzer in my campaign, my dm has homebrewed it to where every spell that ‘manipulates’ life, is now a necromancy spell, because that is what the essence of necromancy is, the power to manipulat life energy

All things considered, the DM handled the situation well in allowing an opportunity to let things play out to resolution and then having the NPC's side with the bullied PC, giving him Inspiration, and having NPC's back him up. It's a DM's way of saying, "I'm not tolerating this B.S. in my game." The DM is there to have fun too gang. And when the Players are making another players efforts to smooth misunderstandings over, and not allowing that characters rolplay to count for something, then the DM not having fun as one of his players is getting his feelings hurt, and it makes him look bad as a referee. So then he is obligated to do something about it. He handled it best by letting it play out, killing off a few characters, and then kicking the other players out after session.

Whole heartily agree. The other option that I've used when DM'ing is telling my players to go the route of warming up to the character they'd normally hate or consider killing and say "you're pretty cool for a [insert hated thing here]." , when playing rather than DM'ing, it's the route I almost always take, unless the player is feeding into my characters prejudice.

While he could have probably been a little harsher in preventative measures, I also feel he did the right thing to gauge what those players were like and act accordingly. Especially if he now warns other dms about their behavior and potentially saves them from having the same problem with those players. I'm not saying he should black list them or have others black list them, but now anybody he tells can keep a keen eye on them and counteract their shite accordingly while maybe trying to guide them in how not to be jackasses.

@@Cha-Khia I agree with that method of handling things. My method of handling prejudice, or more precisely, Player Versus Player Conflict, is to make sure all players, and the DM, are on board with the idea first, and if not, tweak my character a tad bit, to prevent that kind of conflict, or see if it would be possible for the other player to tweak his character instead, depending on the situation.

I didn't know DM inspiration was a thing either, but I guess that's what my DM utilized one session, where one of the players was just having very, very poor rolls, but my DM simply said "If you want, you may reroll that," and never used the words "DM Inspiration," himself. Even if I knew about it before now, it still wouldn't change anything for me personally. Heck, even knowing my DM and how much he hates my rolls, I could probably predict what my DM would say to me if I brought it up: "You don't need, you will never need it, and I will rejoice the day in which you finally get bad rolls for an entire session."

He was nothing but honest, did all he could to help them and they still turned on him. And he isn’t even full drow, he’s half-drow half-human! He cast one spell that all it does is dim the lights, and was a rogue (which that is kinda Bordering on a meta-game backstory hate anyway, to be suspicious of him for being a class)

Okay if they just mistrusted the drow, fair enough. Having a group that works together but still butts head leads to some rp. For example, when the paladin accused the drow of working with the half-dragon and the drow dropped his weapons, the paladin could have checked to see if he fully disarmed before reluctantly putting his sword down and saying he can't attack someone who's unarmed even if he did not trust him. However, there is a case of taking it too far and really the players looking for a reason to kill the rogue with flimsy excuses. And while we're at it, yes I believe the paladin should have fallen the moment he attacked an unarmed person.

I must admit, I did not foresee the DM giving his blessing to kill the party. What a fun ending. And a happy one, too. The DM should probably have stepped in sooner but I can attest that it's difficult to step in when it risks the entire game.

I’m a new DM, and I understand the frustration that DM was feeling. Having a party basically gang-up and harass a single PC for little to no reason is one of the worst things because it derails the story and alienates a player. I’ve had to basically scold the worst offenders, which was honestly a major headache because I’m not the scolding type. D&D is a game which requires a certain level of trust and respect. Without it, it’s easy for things to become very toxic very quickly.

Even with distrusting characters I tend to wait for a concrete reson to go after someone espcilly within a party a sort of "gentlemens agreement I make to myself." But it sounds like the group was just looking to start somthing, the fact the DM tried to talk them out of it without giving things away to the player was nice and I 'm glad he joined the player who was being ganged up on.

I highly recommend talking these things out during 0-game, make sure the players all agree on how inter-player conflicts will be resolved. I allow them, some good RP on those bones if you do, and just have limitations agreed on ahead of time as well as an idea on when the inter-character story ark will best trigger. All it takes is a few moments to talk to the other player about what is causing the conflict and plot other stories going forwards. Weeks later, during act 2 or 3 of the campaign, the slow and controlled build up between the two characters can end up triggering a nice redemption ark or something.

Unspoken rule of DnD : Never backstab the party or a party member. Frankly speaking this is why backstories should be known to each of the players but not each of the characters and even why session 0's are incredibly important to see if the team dynamic is lending itself towards a negative or positive tone. Pity that the full effects were felt too late though. Props to the DM for taking responsibility, and to the Player for being the adults in the situation. This genuinely made me irritated at the human party members.

Good thing that tabletop games have much more simplistic rules than life, and much less real time pressure. Yeah my party bullies the drow in the group, but we bully him for all of his stupid ideas that always fail. The only time he was in danger of one of us killing him was when our aasimar paladin found out he had just signed a bad contract and set a bound devil free.

I understand that the players are roleplaying heavily, but this is one of those circumstances where they're assuming that the half-drow rogue is out to get them and the DM may be colluding with him for some extra drama based on their backstories. That shit _does_ happen from time to time in games, but it's usually when someone has worn out their welcome, and the rogue had clearly not done that.

IMO a good role player would have dropped hints at their char's backstory, that OP could have picked up on. Silently plotting a char's death because of some unrevealed part of your own back story is about as mature as creating a revenge character.

I agree. Party pvp is something that needs to be decided on in a session 0. And, there are other ways to solve disagreements then killing each other. Have a competition of some kind determined by a non bias source, for example.

I typically don't enjoy rogues in games since they ALWAYS, steal other party members stuff. Once had a rogue steal all of my spell components. Not sure why, just for the lulz I guess as the wizard panics mid fight. That being said, I dont go out of my way to kill every class I dislike. They deserve to play too.

I had a similar experience in my second ever Adventurers League game. Everyone else at my table knew each other, so I was the odd one out. They didn't try to kill me, but they basically defended and healed each other first, and kept trying to put me in the most dangerous situations. Oddly, I was also playing a Drow Rogue. Throughout the game they kept telling me to do sneaky things, and how I should steal things and be stealthy, despite the fact my character wasn't a thief. The character had high Persuasion and Deception as I wanted to have a character that could talk himself out of situations. My character got killed and the DM told me that it was a good death for a sneaky thief. I was unlocking a door in the villain's lair, as I thought he might be holding someone hostage. I was told as I was clearly trying to rob the villain, that my thief deserved to die. I think being told that annoyed me more than my character getting killed. I checked the scenario afterwards, and I'm pretty sure the DM fudged the rules because he liked the idea of killing me in that way. Every other game I've played of D&D has been pretty great, but that was the one exception.

This reminded me of the first time i played dnd online, my party treated me like their slave just because i was brand new to the game. And no "slave" was not an over exaggeration. They forced me into every room or corridor first to see if any traps would trigger or enemies ambush us. And even the dm was in on it. Constantly stating "well you have the most hp" even though i didn't. They even called me a liar when i said that the fighter had more hp because of his higher con at that level (i was a barbarian with +0 con he was a fighter with +4)

This happened to me a lot when I play Drow. Even if they’re good aligned, they’re the first to get attacked/ bullied. Most of my DMs though don’t do anything about it. It’s nice to hear there’s decent DMs out there. Loved the story.

This reminds me of a story my friend told me of his greedy party members trying to kill his rogue and take his treasure. They disliked him so sent him to fight the dragon on his own so he would die. He both won and got solo XP going up 3 levels. When he came back with the treasure they wanted all of it or they would kill him. There is a lot to the story, might post it on reddit later, but he ended up killing them all and breaking a staff of the magi, being transported to another realm entirely.

I had a similar experience myself once before. I was playing a Kobold Wizard, and the others were playing a Human Monk, Kenku Rogue, Goliath Barbarian, and a Teifling Cleric. The Campaign was homebrewed, and our first task was to deliver a weird looking lantern, to a museum in a large city (The Lantern was obviously magical, and everyone knew it, but that's not relevant for the story now). We spent roughly 3 sessions in between getting hired on our first mission and actually finishing it. All the way through was hell for my Kobold Wizard. For context on my character, my Kobold Wizard was actually Chaotic Good as he was part of a tribe that helped build the Sewers of one of the major cities in the campaign, and worked with others races quite often, eventually doing a favor for a Wizard by collecting Spell Components for her and slowly but surely picking up Magic along the way. Now, back to the campaign. We entered a village where we were to stay the night as we waited for our employer to arrive. There was a few disagreements on who should sleep where at the inn/tavern, as 4 of us were all Races not exactly known for being good. But eventually Cleric, Barbarian, and Monk decided to share a room for a few reasons. 1. Monk was Human and took a Magical Oath to do no harm to the unarmed. 2. Teifling was a Cleric of Bahamut, the God of Metallic Good Dragons. So you know, being the Cleric of a Good Deity makes you trust worthy. 3. Barbarian is a Goliath, honor bound to serve his tribe, who told him to go with our group as it would "make him stronger". That only left me and Kenku to figure things out, after a bit of debating, I ended up getting kicked out of the Inn, as Monk told the Inn Keeper "Let the Kenku stay, he's our servant like Kenku usually are." "And what about the Kobold?" "Who? Him? Eh, leave him outside. His Wizard Masted will probably find him." So my character got shoved to the curb for the night, at least I Prestitation to start a Campfire for warmth. Still, it pissed me off but it was the start of Session 1 and I didn't want to argue and ruin the fun. Besides, it was one time, how bad could it be? The next day, after we get the Lantern and are on our way, a little bit outside the City we were just in, we get ambushed by some Dragonborn Fighters and Sorcerers, all Level 1, claiming to be after the Lantern. We fight them off, but take a few blows ourselves from piss poor rolls. Cleric Heals everyone up except for me. I ask why and he replies "It is Bahamut's will, he would not want me to Heal such a lowly creature, such as yourself who slaves under the Dragons of Tiamot." That annoyed me a little, as my Kobold was a devoted worshiper of Bahamut in his spare time, as he hopes by doing this, it will prevent him from losing his way and turning evil. I go to the Goliath Barbarian and asked him for a Healing Potion if he had one extra, he did, but refused to give it to me cause my character was a Monster Race. Again, annoying, but whatever, Kenku can steal if right? Wrong, as soon as I asked, Kenku, outloud, repeated exactly, word for word what my character asked, basically asking to steal Goliath's Healing Potion. That instantly turned the other players against me, and the DM stepped in before Initiative could be rolled, saying "No PvP!" The other players complied, only if I was to be tied up. And so, I was, the DM had to reluctantly agree just to shut them up, but at least the DM was kind enough to heal me secretly without the other players knowing, just deciding to Deus Ex Machina it. Still, for Session 1 and a bit of 2 I was being dragged around on the ground, unable to get up due to my piss poor strength and -1 to it as well (Thanks WotC). Thank god the DM decided to end that drag fest, as I constantly took damage in combat, and no one would heal me, so the DM either had to basically play around me as I fail my strength checks, or heal me up with zero explanations. Anyway, this is getting long enough, so I'll speed through the rest. Session 2 was basically more of the same, alienating my character and no Healing, Session 3 was when it hit the fan. My Magic Missle misses my original target in combat, and hits Goliath for some pretty trash damage, like hitting an Elephant with a Marshmallow. But apparently, that was enough to enrage the Goliath, and everyone else after combat eventually ended, and then it started back up again as the PCs attacked my Kobold. As soon as the first Roll to attack me was made, the DM got up and told everyone to leave, Session Over. Now I still played through the campaign, but it was basically hard reset after Session 3 with some new players. Not sure what it was with the other guys, if they just hated the Monsterious Races or if it was some personal beef with me. Either way, I hope I never play with those guys ever again.

if I was the DM, I would have tried to break up the fight right when the paladin took their first swing, with the words 'You fall', since while Paladins don't need to be Lawful Good anymore, most of their sacred oaths do have an anti-betrayal part, and even if theirs did not, the time taken 'realizing my mistake' would be a good way to let them know metawise that, yeah, they are the assholes here.

I never get why such groups don't try to grow a spine and straightout say "hey dude, there isn't anything wrong with you, but we want to RP as friends here and don't want anyone from outside to join". Instead they try to alienize the player with coming out with excuses to either kill him or make him feel miserable in-game, while wasting both their and the targeted player's time in real life in the process.

I play paladin a lot, how I work around the whole drow is evil thing is by simply going with this mindset. As long as they are the master of their darkness not the other way around, I have no problem. Though in the campaign I am currently playing my Sun elf paladin was at one point a drow warlock. Long story I plan to put it on reddit. Anyways he has no problem with beings of darkness or insane people, because he was once both. As a paladin of redemption, he does his best to help them to better lives by setting the example. He's honestly been the funnest pc I've ever rp.

Thank goodness for the DM. I am very hesitant around most DM's now due to past experiences. I only really trust one, and that's my husband. I am one myself and have a habit of over rewarding my players. I also warn my players that I can go heavy on them, but I will not let them die unnecessarily, always root for them, and let give them very OP items and feats early on for no reason.

When the party tries to kill my PC... I generally ensure the rest of the party dies. And with now very close to 48 years of experience playing D&D... I know exactly how to get the rest of the party killed. I gave the DM of the campaign I am playing in a lesson on how to use a roper , by polymorphing my cleric into a roper and wiping out the enemies that were about to TPK the party. I love the "Roper Yo-Yo" tactic. Grapple, reel, hold suspended too far to do anything useful vs the roper and high enough that the fall hurts... Drop, grapple and reel again next turn. Drop is a free action... Just let go.

I've had to essentially hand-of-God a bullying situation before as DM. It's one reason I like to introduce an old, retired-from-adventuring Paladin to the party early in the campaign, who is comfortably 5 or so levels higher than I plan the party to be by endgame, whose commitments prevent him/her from solving the plot on his/her own. If things start getting out of hand and players take bullying ingame, I have the retired Paladin come across the party while following a dreamsent warning from one of their god's servitors (typically because said god has a vested interest in the party stopping the BBEG, sometimes because that particular servitor likes to keep tabs on their adventures to pass the time and what's transpiring runs afoul of their ethical/moral code). The Paladin is high enough level and geared well enough to defend the bullied player from the others, and has a spell selection to end combat early and force anything spoken to be the truth (with high-enough saves required that the party is highly unlikely to be able to brute-force through it). This is kind of a last-ditch trick to pull out of my bag, only if things are going very badly, because I hate using deus ex machina lightly. If I can feasibly solve the problem without having a high-tier NPC come in and babysit for a session, I'll take any other remedy no matter how insane I consider it. But sometimes, I've needed to, well, have a paladin come babysit the party because the players are being ponces but the issues aren't insurmountable with some table time to air shit out.

Man, I would just love to have my Hexblade mixed in with these yahoos. He's actually a pretty decent guy on the whole, but "Dark Magic" is his entire MO. They would absolutely be trying to kill him, but well... to put it simply, he is a character that has outlived several others and survived two TPKs. His damage output is great, he's unusually tough for a Warlock, and he's more slippery than a greased eel. And honestly, he's just really good at messing with people. It would be great fun to repeatedly make a joke of their idiotic murder attempts.

PvP conflict can be great. If the other PCs had reasons to dislike or mistrust OCs character, that could've made got some good roleplay. But in those situations, they should've talked things through OOC to make sure OP was still enjoying himself. And it definitely shouldn't have ended with them trying to kill him. Thank God the DM took his side.

DM sounds pretty cool though. I like the sound of his half-drow rogue being ultra-reliable. Reminds me of a more dramatic version of a game I played in when I played a tiefling rogue who was a fencing instructor and etiquette tutor (basically a knockoff from a character I liked in the Lucifer comic). The other characters didn't try to kill mine, but the DM openly took joy in killing characters. There was an aasimar paladin that was very high and mighty and in our first session we stumbled across a cave serving as a hideout for smugglers. During the inevitable battle the paladin finds the loot and claims it for the proper authorities - as in the local lord or whatever. Seeing the way things were going I claimed the next box of stuff for the party "you mean for yourself right? no i mean for the party, we're all in this together." The other players all knew each other and most of them shared a house and it seems they spoke to the boisterous paladin - who had been elected party leader at the start of the first session - and told him they did not appreciate having him give away all the treasure without consultation. Particularly since it was a 'found' adventure with no reward attached to it and he agreed not to do that anymore. Over the next few weeks my character gained a reputation as being the paladin of the group because of his high moral character and observance to politeness. He had a terrible charisma but I still invested as many points into diplomacy as I could manage because that was part of the concept. The game didn't last long because the DMs favouritism toward the paladin character was too overbearing for me and my friend to have fun so we stopped going, but I did enjoy that rogue.

I'll be honest, got a guy in our group whose character has a dark, edgy, blood-filled past - a CN tiefling assassin who killed his own mother (to be honest, the DM doesn't like that guy's backstory too much, and I don't know much about it myself, as I am new to the group, and this guy hasn't played for a few months as the DM was taking a break to deal with creativity block - played Lost Mines of Phalandover with a player who wanted to try to do some DMing so that folks had something to do, which was fun for me as I was a newbie learning the ropes) and generally has a "Forget this stuff" (only a bit more rude) sort of attitude. Me, I'm a LG Fighter, who was the Commander of a City's guard, who had lead a rebellion against a corrupt king, even killing said king, only to get back-stabbed by a "So-called" ally. In any case, as a guard, trust and teamwork would be important to my guy, and he'd have to be deaf, blind, and very dumb, to not notice this assassin not even trying to help out. To be far, I joined the party at Level 5, now 6, so since my guy has seen a few things obviously, I'd like to talk to the DM about the possibility of my guy and the tiefling having a conversation, and try to smooth things out. It might allow for that character to start to become more social.

Having prejudices against other party members is fun.... But only when you either intend for: A: Your character overcomes their prejudice by traveling with the ally. or B: Your character is going to make a villain turn, and become an NPC BBEG for the party later on. Having a party where everyone just hates one character and decides to murder them isn't a story. It's like if you made a campaign about KKK members traveling with a black guy, and the finale of the story was that the KKK members lynched the black guy. There's no arc, there's no twist, so it's just boring.

I had a great experience with it in my first campaign, but me and the other player has both agreed to it and made sure the other was comfortable with it beforehand.
