Hey Julia, thank you so much for your video. My name is Denisse, I finished undergrad in 2019 as a Biology-Biomedical./ My goal had always being to become a doctor and a general surgeon. On my last year of undergrad, I met my husband and well got married and now we have our son. This two gap year I did my Certified Medical Assistant which I am working as a CMA in a Family practice and I also finish school for Hemodialysis Technician. I had been back and forward about becoming a Physician Assistant as I work will them mostly or do my dream for actually becoming the surgeon I want to be. I would love for you to give me some more inspiration. I am a minority, parents are from Mexico and I was a first college graduate in my family. I haven't stop studying because I love everything related to medicine and now I do not know If I will be a good applicant for Med school only with my undergrad and the two certifications I did or if I should go for an masters degree as well before med school. I am 23 right now, graduated at 20 from college. Thank you and sorry for the long comment.

What makes someone stand out on your application to college specifically someone on the path to becoming doctor. What can they do in high school specifically?
@translucentheart273 жыл бұрын
Tbh nothing stands out to the adcoms anymore - just be yourself, do activities you actually like, tbh high school activities don’t matter unless they’re clinical or volunteering. So focus on getting extracurriculars starting freshman year! And don’t try to impress, just be you! 😁

I’m still in undergrad but very determined to get into Dermatology, how did you get your medical assistant job? I would love an opportunity to get my foot in the door but don’t know where to start. Btw thank you for sharing your story it’s very inspiring💗
@thejuliacarter3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Ania! 💛 I got my job literally by searching on Indeed in the area I was in. Luckily, I did not need any license or certification to be a medical assistant there, and they did all of the training on site in their private practice. I think it was a good find, but this is a common thing, especially in private practices. So I would start there! 😊
@franciscafadairo60673 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing this. I was thinking about how my post college years would love like. I also want to be a biology major although I was scared that it would be a boring and common major but your reason about having something to fall back on reminded me about that. I plan on taking a gap year as well. Would you say the MCAT goes beyond what we learn in college even on a pre-med track? Do you think it would be better to take a gap year to study and then apply or to apply if you feel ready?
@Britneyeller24 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have a question. How do you know when you you have to take a post-bacc or masters program? what grades are considered competitive
@01kezy4 жыл бұрын
First, thank you for the channel and sharing your experience! I just tuned in today, so forgive me if you already answered this. Were you able to become a medical assistant because you did a program and trained, or did they hire you and train you because you had a bachelors and masters ?
@thejuliacarter3 жыл бұрын
I was hired and trained on site so I did not need a certificate or training beforehand!

Do you have any advice on getting a MPH and MD at the same time, kind of like dual programs?
@thejuliacarter3 жыл бұрын
DO IT! Not only is the degree helpful and interesting, but in the competitive landscape of medical education, I think the dual degree sets an individual apart in the residency application process and gives them that edge.
@MotivationalNu3 жыл бұрын
Hi julia! If you don’t mind me asking what was your undergrad GPA? Also did they use your masters GPA and not your undergrad? I’m debating on doing my MPH or MBS
@thejuliacarter2 жыл бұрын
My undergrad GPA was a 3.72. They use both your undergrad and any graduate or post-bacc GPAs you have as well.

so pre med is 4 years after high school then 4 more years of med school dam i feel like i will be old before i become a neurosurgeon is there a shorter way or am i getting this all wrong?
@thejuliacarter3 жыл бұрын
Yep! You got it right. There are some college programs that cut down the amount of time by doing 2-3 years of college and going right into medical school, but they usually have separate applications so it requires some research beforehand!

Hi love! 💛 I appreciate your comment so much. Unfortunately, I do not have a formal mentorship program at this time. I am so busy and wouldn't currently be able to keep up with a mentorship program. Therefore, I make these KZbin videos as a way to provide mentorship and guidance to whoever views them. Hopefully one day soon I'll be able to get a mentorship network going!

I'm 27 and I'm finishing my BA in psychology. I only have work experience in accounting but I have this voice in my head to pursue medicine. Do you have any advice for volunteering or more exposure to medicine during the pandemic?
@thejuliacarter4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tiffany! It may be a difficult time to shadow and get more experience, as many clinics and hospitals are not having visitors for shadowing due to the risk of exposure. I think it is still worth reaching out and trying to see what opportunities are out there though. You can reach out to local clinics or doctor's offices. You can even volunteer your services to screen incoming patients (take their temperature, distribute masks, etc.). Worth a shot!
