Medical school is a very tedious journey according to my batchmates who are on their way to clerkship but it's so worth it. Attending/ Consultants and even Hospitalist of different fields that I worked with in the hospital told me that if you really want to go to med school then go for it because not everyone has the same passion to help other people. My mom and I, we both were affected by covid last year. She had to stay in the hospital for 1 and a half month. My condition overall was better than her so I wasn't hospatilized. I used to sit outside the ICU and see the doctors and the patients there. And watching all the chaotic, interesting, hectic days of the doctors, I also had a gut feeling that this is what I want to achieve.

unfortunately the GAMSAT this year is close to being cancelled for the March sitting. Test centres in Ireland, Washington and Singapore have cancelled the exam. This delays my hopes in getting into medicine for the following year but its out of everyones control. Theyre allowing most students to defer or get a complete refund which is upsetting because as of yet the people who sat the gamsat last year may have less competition for next year
@SebastianPirie4 жыл бұрын
I've heard about this, and it's a very unfortunate situation. It's something that no one anticipated but the best thing you can do is look to next year. I just hope ACER will be able to offer a suitable alternative. Hoping it all goes well 🤞🏼

I am from India and here after finishing your 4th and last year of high school all the children sit for a board exam which is pretty much like normal exam just the paper is made and checked in CBSE center. To get into med school you have to sit for an exam called NEET . Then your rank and score decides what college you get into.If you don't get a good rank or score then you try again next year. The top medical college here is AIIMS and that is My aim . Your story really inspires me . You are so dedicated and passionate.

@Grace Olorunnife Hii 😊 The course has been pretty good imo, we definitely get a lot more clinical placement earlier on and throughout in comparison to some down south unis. my 5th year has been 100% full-time clinical placement over 6 different rotations (e.g. surgery, paediatrics, mental health etc) and we were only recalled for six weeks during the peak of covid. and we still got online zoom classes with consultants/registrars during this time. the main difference with JCU is that we have an extra 6th year of the degree which is used to further our clinical skills and ensure we're 'intern ready' once we graduate, and a lot of doctors (and students) said it was really helpful in making us more competent. the first three years are lecture-tutorial-study-exam focused and we're taught half by doctors and half by professors who specialise in the various forms of biology). jcu staff/coordinators are very much willing to help/assist u when there are concerns and i will say it is a pretty guided course. We have lots of long-term rural placements which we are required to complete by JCU which have actually turned out to be the best place to learn as u are allowed to perform / assist with a lot more clinical procedures/interactions than usual. Issues are we don't get much opportunity to have placement at large city hospitals and jcu can be a bit unorganised admin wise with scheduling/paperwork/assignment stuff (though i feel like that is the same with a lot of unis). But anyways, i defs feel like i made the right choice by coming here and i hope u will enjoy it too if u come
@vacdir4 жыл бұрын
@Grace Olorunnife Hmm the disorganisation hasn't affected me too much at all, it's mainly just because in the later clinical years, all the tutorials/lectures are given by working doctors whose availability are subject to change (due to emergency cases etc), so there are a lot of times where things have been cancelled/rearranged suddenly and without notice. it's smalls things like that which are annoying, but understandable. After we graduate from JCU we get preference for hospitals in queensland (including Brisbane). its then a preference lottery for which hospital u actually get for your internship. so no, not being able to have placement at larger hospitals does NOt affect internships. But i'm only in 5th year so i''m not too knowledgeable about the ins and outs of internship allocations. In regards to note taking, it changes year to year, student to student. Everyone sucks in first year and has no idea what they're doing so dw too much, you'll get the hang of it. But for the first three years at JCU, the lecture material + tutorials covers all the info u need to know for exams (to at least get a Distinction). And lecturers will specifically tell you if there's a chapter in a textbook you need to cover or something. So just summarising those will be enough. In the clinical years (4-6), I used notes written by the med students from previous years and just updated them to current guidelines (or made them more succinct). But honestly, everyone studies differently and usually all your fellow students are willing to help out and share notes/group study

You have just been rejected from Monash Medical School, sat the GAMSAT once with little prep and got a score below 50 ( Section 3 really dragged you down). I've never seen you cry like that, the way you bawled your eyes reading that rejection letter, those tears taught you that you really do want to become a doctor. That, this is something you really must do. I need you to pick yourself up, you can't give up. You have barely tried. So what you got rejected ( once, girl lets be for real)? We all need to fall, but what makes someone different and successful is the way they pick themself up. You need to stand up, you need to stand up strong and full of courage. Invite God onto this journey. You can do nothing unless through Christ. Do it for the lives you will save, do it for the happy faces you will bring, do it for the hope and light you will bring. You can't give up, you have barely left the starting line.

Not at all! I have friends who have started med school in their late 20s/early 30s and they're doing great. Definitely have a crack at it, and you can always try go the postgraduate route after Podiatry. Best of luck ✌🏼

@@SebastianPirie Thanks for the response! That leads me to a slightly more personal question if you don't mind. How old were you when you were finally accepted into med?

Currently in my third year in a bachelor course and where I stay in the western part of Africa where I’ll most likely finish by 2022 and still do a one year compulsory serving Am currently twenty so roughly 23/24 before I finish only my bachelor , then start thinking of medical school which is four years outside my continent cuz if I stay here I’ll grow old before I finish the course 😁.. So you’re still young compare to when I’ll start my own journey by God grace , hope it’s easier for me to get in , and am also a female So it’s never too late as long as that what you dream of doing wasted two years before my bachelor all because I wanted medicine and nothing else ... hoped I saw medical videos when I was at high school but well it’s never too late to start🤗

Hi Sebastian, you said you sat the Gamsat four times....did you also resit the UMAT in your first year of uni?
@SebastianPirie4 жыл бұрын
No I didn't. By that stage I was committed into going through the postgraduate pathway, so I turned my attention to the GAMSAT :)

Hey, I love your channel. It is very helpful and interesting. I am a first-year student at UNSW, studying advanced Science/ Commerce. I always wanted to be a doctor, but I didn't have enough courage to take UCAT last year because I was focusing more on my ATAR. So I am thinking to go the GAMSAT route. I chose a double degree so if I didn't make it into med school, I can still easily get a job with a commerce degree. But I am worried because I belong to the business faculty in uni, so will it disadvantageous in interviews compared to just science or medical science degrees? After this term, I have to declare my majors so I like something that would help me in my medical degree (If I make it). What are the courses that 1st-year medical student learn? Or what courses would you recommend? And also my degree is expected to take 4 years, so can I sit for GAMSAT in my final year or do I have to wait until I graduate? Sorry for the rambling. Hope you stay safe and healthy.

Hi there! It doesn't matter what degree you do before med school, they don't give any preference to science majors. As for subjects, anything biology, chemistry, or physics related will be helpful when it comes to sitting the GAMSAT. Your GAMSAT score is valid for 2 years, so you can sit it the 2 years prior before graduation. Hope this clarifies things, and good luck! 😊
