I keep a small square (about 4" x 4") aluminum in the front pocket of mine. I use it under my bottle stove alcohol burner as well as the bottom of my Esbit stove. It does weigh a few ounces but makes a very stable platform for all stoves and cooking implements.

Cool set up. I still like that foam and foil lid you made for an earlier kit. On that note, in the spirit of reducing weight and items in a kit, how would you go about making a ground protector that can also be used as a scrubbing pad? Could a square of carbon felt do the job?

A scrubby would work as a ground pad, so would carbon felt, anything that would insulate the stove from the ground. Some people use carbon felt as a wind screen but I think aluminum foil is better and cheaper.
