I agree, seeing her loose her deep green coloration (esp. on her back, but then spreading!) was really concerning to me, but I'm so glad they seem to be well on their way to sustainability. I'm really surprised about the sugar water though, but I'm not sure they could actually smell it... Then again, gutloaded roaches would definitely be sufficient and it is much better than the alternative of having them only drinking sugar, but rejecting protein!

When it was mentioned that a captive weaver ant colony has never been successfully started from just a pregnant queen ant before, I had a thought. Everyone who has tried to keep them in the past likely put the queen ant into a test tube setup. What if it's the bottle that's the reason this colony is continuing to develop. Weaver ant queens start in a curled leaf or a hole in wood, where there would be lots of airflow and space. What if a test tube is just too contained for the ants to be comfortable and the confined spaces messes with their instincts. Wouldn't it be amazing if Mikey stumbled on the trick to starting a weaver ant colony by accident?
@AntsCanada2 жыл бұрын
Let's hope that's true. Thing is, it's at this stage now that weaver ant colonies start to falter. Once we get them to around 100 or so workers then we know for sure they've made further than the "danger zone" that most weaver ant keeper hopefulls can't seem to get past!

I think it is really interesting that the ants focused on a very specific food source first. I feel like it would make sense that while carbs are a great boost, the smaller nanitics and the queen probably would be better off served with their finite internal resources by getting protein first. And as for the setup, especially with the one worker trying to carry the prey upwards sort of fits in with some of the other comments I've seen made on how a bigger, more open space with more air and at least some more elevation helps them feel more in line with what they would be experiencing in the trees, instead of tight underground spaces.
@senseiwu78142 жыл бұрын
Oh, I see you've taken the time to study ant behavior and nutrition, have you? I'm impressed. Allow me to enlighten you with some actual facts. Ants are highly adaptable creatures and will prioritize food sources based on what is most readily available to them at the time. They are also able to adjust their foraging behavior based on the needs of the colony. As for the setup, it's called a formicarium for a reason. It's designed to replicate the natural habitat of ants as closely as possible, so your suggestion to add a tube and tape the bottle to a branch is completely unnecessary and misguided. Now if you'll excuse me, I have better things to do than engage in a conversation with an amateur entomologist.

I like games and there is something about ant keeping that reminds me of games like Rimworld, or Banished, pretty much any colony-building simulator sort of games. It is easy to anthropomorphize the ants in the colony, trying to imagine what they think of events as they happen, or perhaps figure out how they prioritize certain projects. Or maybe it is just me? This may be a uneducated question but if there isn't much information known about how weaver ants proliferate at a young colony stage is it possible that they nest in specific types of leafs and require specific nutrients that can only be gathered In the trees sort of like your old termite pairs that required a specific kind of mold or fungus to survive? Maybe since a lot isn't known yet could something along those lines be what ant keepers are missing in rearing a successful colony?
@AntsCanada2 жыл бұрын
I did think of this. It is likely diet-related. I would guess that wild weaver ants get certain key micronutrients/minerals/vitamins from honeydew milked from plant insects feeding on plant sap. If this is the case, duplicating that specific diet would be difficult in captivity using feeder insects. Perhaps I can try to find a branch with mealybugs to provide. Hmm...?
@j0v1232 жыл бұрын
@@AntsCanada during your live stream a few months back there was that tree with the weaver ants on it possibly returning to that area and collecting parts near the nest that contain those insects and planting them to farm them on your own or provide it to this current colony to do so might be beneficial in successfully rearing them at this difficult stage

It's a weird thing to say, but whenever the queen is looking right at you when you're recording, she's always exuded awareness, but I read her body language as suspicion early on. But in this episode after the meal of the roach, she didn't look suspicious, she almost looked like she was comforted by your presence. So, I think this colony will succeed, just because the queen thinks you're an alright guy. :D

I have always been afraid, almost phobic, of ants as I have been attacked by different species throughout my travels. With that said, I've been caring for a 1½ legged ant that my dog stepped on for over 2 weeks now. Found this channel trying to learn how to care for her. I change her substrate (a paper towel) and attempt to feed and water her 4x a day. I feel bad bc she is probably lonely although she seems to be learning that I am a friend. She used to attack whatever I placed in front of her now she readily eats the treats I feed her. We even have a routine for switching out her paper towel! I watched the ant anatomy video it was funny but not altogether helpful hahaha I was wondering what her little "mouth legs" are. Can anyone can tell me what they are called and what they do?
