My Pinion to Racks! Addendum & Dedendum; is about a replacement and repair combination project on a main spindle gear for a small lathe. We are making one and repairing one of the same main gears, Part Nine; we finish shaping the build up and set the gear up in the index head that was mounted on the K&T and reclaimed the the teeth that had been broken out.

I love the fact you take as much time and provide the same quality of work with a worn out gear, as you do for your bigger projects...........Merry Christmas.

Great video. I know "to see how make it" and "to do it" is something with an ocean between, but to know how is always useful. Thanks Keith, all the best to you and your family.

Shiny things, mmmMMMmmmMmm :) Topjob Mr Fenner. Seasons greetings to you and yours .. My Dad once interviewed joiners to work at the place where he was site services manager and the guy who got the job did so by a curious route. My Dad put half a dozen four inch nails on the desk near the interviewees and while they were discussing the job, hours, holidays etc this one chap, sort of without thinking, picked the nails up and arranged them in his left hand, ready to roll down his fingers one by one to hammer in. Some guys moved them aside, one guy called them screws, but this guy was ready for some work. There is something about all those shiny teeth, all precise and orderly that just gives me a warm glow. I'm a bugger for loosing hours in hardware stores just looking at orderly shelves :)

Keith, I was wondering what you plan to do about removing the excess braze that dripped and stuck onto the central web of the gear while you were brazing. I'm feeling that because that part of the gear wasn't heated up as high as the area you were building up, that even though it ran with the flux and stuck, you might be able to just whack it off with a hammer and chisel? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you will have this series posted and done before Christmas as a present to your loyal fans! Great work. Rich

this has been a very interesting series.i have learned a lot. on the subject of balancing, since the new gear is a completely machined piece, as opposed to what looks like a casting on the original gear.do you think its necessary to copy the old balancing holes? a local automotive machine shop probably has a set of knife edge rollers that you could use to check the static balance. just a thought.

one side of original gear was cut out (or forged that way) and I noticed at the end of the teeth cutting there were several lumps underneath the area where you added the material...was that part of the original and I'm blind in both eyes instead of one?

Ok, so enlighten me...how is it that bronze can be used as a replacement for gear teeth? Over time, it will most likely wear out faster than cast iron.

The bronze brazing rod is closer than any other alloy, as far as, wear and bearing surfaces for mending ductile materials. It is not as soft as most are led to be. ;{)-----

Thanks for the great series Keith. I'm sure you've mentioned it elsewhere, but I missed it--Why did you both make a repair and make a new gear? Was it just for educational purposes or did the fellow who sent you the job actually need two gears?

Hey Keith, thanks for this video. I have been wanting to repair a gear of my own for long time, but was discouraged when members of a machining forum had told me basically it was impossible. They said you needed to be within tenths on a gear and that cutting that would not be feasible. I am sure the touchy feely method does not produce that type of accuracy, but I trust your experience. Have you ever used a gear repaired in this manner, and if so, is it smooth, or does it click, or is general performance acceptable? Thanks again for everything you do, Chris

Yeah i keep it so kevin from australia i've been watching your videos for me a long time just curious anyway um to frustration you are doing um why do you use actually um 2 different metals in repairing the teeth am here that you are referring just curious that's all um looks very neat very tidy and i'm just curious why do you use two different metals in the arm doing that sort of work i am used to be a machinist years ago too late last night vision and am i still follow a lot of the youtube videos on machining i get back to me if you don't want that way about it but dad just curious now use grass and um and um is there any others is there any other sort of metal that you could have used 21 repair the teeth on the cog but you are working on i am i suppose it would be hard or easier how to use brass am yeah very nice very very knowledgeable person i do watch a lot of the addams videos cesar a bit of a character but that a very educational we don't have people like that over here in australia we don't have many youtube videos on the machinist so and i hope you read this comment and um i feel free to leave a message if you don't bother catch up kevin from australia come by

Kevin Schwartz I use bronze alloy brazing rod because it holds up and matches the wear and tear just like the ductile iron, and does not affect the base metals like when it is turned to molten stages in TIG or stick welding. ;{)-----

cheers keith.... been sitting back watchin all your vids instead of workin in my shop... just rebuilt a nice big one after the fires 5 years back... anyway, im not one for dick swinging but we have plenty of old school guys like yourself that are around in australia... i have 3 good friends that i call on when in need who are a wealth of info, like yourself.... anyway i was wondering why you didnt go for the other holes in your chuck to tighten the work with the half inch drive..... anyway, over here in australia we bronze cast repairs too... dont know what that dude below was on about...... anyway keith, your a wealth of info mate... i like your use of dial ind to double check as you cut. im stealin that one, and your use of a marker all the time, another good tip... how come you dont use coolant?... is it because the the tungsten can handle the heat?... i was going to setup a coolant system on my lathe but mighten bother now, i know you dont use coolant on cast iron. i meant the when cutting steel... cheers man and peace

I Don't know why I kept to one hole. The coolant would be nice if I had the room to create all the guards and be able to jump back behind the lathe and setup and or play with all my attachments with the same freedom I have now. I don't have room for the soup cup! LOL ;{)-----

Keith Fenner That's cool keith...sometimes I will be doing something very intricate and my son comes in and points out a much easier, very obvious way... lol.....as for your coolant, I suppose it would be a lot of shielding needed and getting all around that profile duplicator would be tricky.... but my mate who runs a couple of mazaks says the tips love a good bite when peeling off metal..... but for light cuts, high speed steel seems to give better results...... anyway, I have you playin on the big screen in the lounge room and soakin in your tips....thanks for sharin with us all, the old shool way...btw my wife likes to mimic your accent as shes in the kitchen cookin.... whilst Im on the lounge doin "research"....lol...cheers man.....as for your soup cup, I read somewhere someone uses a mixture of antiseize in their cutting fluid?... I might give it a try.................cheers Pete from Ozz
