I'm 18 and just started my gap year full of crazy mind-opening experiences, and I got so excited when you talked about a gift-based economy!! I just got back from Burning Man 2023, and while it definitely has its issues, a complete gift-based economy is one of the coolest aspects of the city. There are ten principles, and three are "Radical Self Reliance," "Decommodification," and "Gifting." So you are in charge of making sure you have what you need, and then you come to the city prepared to gift your energy and resources to others without expecting anything in return. You can't buy anything but ice the entire time you are there! It was really beautiful because everyone felt so grateful and connected, and whenever anyone approached you, it was because they were trying to do something for you, not get something from you.

Even though you didn’t have your usual porridge, this video still felt so authentically you! And I love how you’re prioritising healthy aspects in your routine, I’m having this summer off from work and am also trying to focus on building such habits, even though it’s hard sometimes to stick to them or not feel like a failure when things don’t go as planned. Something I read lately, is that building good routines is not an overnight thing, instead it almost feels unnoticeable. Results don’t show quickly. However, it’s important that you trust Time as your friend, instead of enemy. Overtime, benefits will show from putting in those daily efforts. Every choice you made for you, DOES MATTER! Anyway, thanks a lot for making this video, I loved it!💚💚

Just an advice because I know how important health is to you too: As much as I can understand that it's easier to make your bed first thing in the morning, it is actually very important, to give our mattress and bedding some time to air out before making the bed. in order to fight moisture and dust mites. It’s very cool you have broken through old stereotypes of what university is supposed to be and what work is. The idea of “everyone needing” to have an old fashioned “9-5” job is an outdated and narrow concept. You have more influence on people throughout the globe than so many people in regular jobs, so much more power, and you do it well. Good to see you charge forth doing things in your own way despite external projections. To each their own. Best wishes to you! 🍀

You've just inspired me to go look into this sort of retreat, I'll be excited to hear your experience goes! And when you mentioned about leaving early and said we have to embrace our failures...I agree absolutely that we have to embrace our failures because we as humans aren't perfect, but I don't think leaving a 10-day, 12-hours-a-day meditation retreat early should automatically be considered a failure? Wouldn't that be similar to saying someone who is a runner, loves running, does it every day, but then signs up for an ultra marathon and has to stop because it's above what they are capable of at the time...would that stopping be a failure? I don't think so...but it definitely makes me consider what is considered "failing" as opposed to "succeeding" and who is setting that threshold. This is my own opinion, but I think if you push yourself as far as you can, and successfully disconnect and ground yourself, then it doesn't matter if pushing yourself as far as you can crosses the threshold of 10 days. I think whatever point is the furthest you can go, whether it is as far as you thought you could go, or shorter, or further, would be a success. 🙂 There's a KZbinr I love called Eva zu Beck, and she published a video about her quitting this run she'd set herself to; she's a traveler and a runner, but on this one intense run around a mountain (I think spanning 2 or 3 days, she had to set up camp) she had to make the tough call to turn around. She shared some valuable insights, I think, on what it means to quit, and that quitting does not equal failure. It's helped me keep some perspective on things, as well. Anyways. Just some thoughts. Wishing the best for you, Jade!

@@UnJadedJade exactly 🙂 like, I made a promise to my dog 13 & a half years ago, and sadly, Monday last week at 3:40am, I had to go through with the promise. I always promised her when her time came, she would be at home with me and her daddy, in her blanket and in my arms, and she was. I would have felt like I failed her if I hadn't been there to keep that promise. She would have been turning 17 years old next week

@@UnJadedJade yess! A bit similar to what you were saying, but how we can apply the market economy vs gift economy to today's society, how things change when they cross the boundary between gift and commodity, I thought about the concept of time as a gift vs a commodity, and how beautifully the author can combine indigenous knowledge and her botany studies.

I did a Goenka Vipassana retreat 8 months ago. It’s very structured with a clear schedule that everyone follows so it all feels pretty normal within the first few days. There are ups and downs , emotionally and physically but that’s all part of it. Try not to see as something so intimidating, it’s not , it’s just a technique which is taught is a very specific and guided way. Follow the rules, listen to Goenka is who is hilarious and see what happens. It’s all about observation. The centre I went to allowed us to do some walking in the breaks and I know you will love the food …almost all vegan. Do not worry about the limited meals , you get used to it within a couple of days. I did this retreat after many years of meditation albeit on nowhere like the same scale and it was also as part of a bereavement process. I try to do as much work on preventative mental health care as possible in order to cope with lives huge challenges. The Camino de Santiago alone was another one 😊. The Goenka retreat was a real privilege and now I want to repay the kindness of the centre volunteers by becoming a volunteer myself later this year. May you go into this with an open heart. 💜

Jade - given that you've spoken a lot recently about the sense of post-graduation confusion and lack of direction, frankly I think you've never looked and sounded happier and more playful! And I hope this doesn't sound inappropriate or creepy, but there's a real sensuality about the way you move that I've never noticed before; I don't know whether it's confidence, all the yoga, a playful kind of energy or just a sense of really owning your body, but it's super heartwarming and totally compelling. 😊
