I own a hedgehog and I gasped out loud when I you holding one! I can give you some advice. They are usually timid and shy creatures, so you want them to get used to you, hold her often, let her explore her surroundings, you also can give her treats too, mealworms are what my hedgehog likes. Brit here, we have hedgehogs in the wild and they're pretty chill. Their spines give them plenty of protection and curling into a ball is their first line of defence. They're not like porcupines that can detach or thrust their spikes into you, so you don't really need to worry about that. They're carnivorous so will eat (wet, not dry) cat food but you can probably get some stuff formulated to them specifically. They also poo all over themselves so you might not want to keep them indoors unless you wash them very frequently.

Just a few tips and tricks for Hedgehogs that I’ve learned over the years, after you bathe them, put some coconut oil on their quills and on the edge of their ears to help moisturize. Using a tooth brush when bathing is so helpful! One thing that my hedges loved was watermelon and strawberries!

I have looked after hedgehogs only briefly so the only thing I can pass on of value is don't be worried if it froths at the mouth, they annoint themselves after they eat certain foods. Annointing is basically frothing up saliva and licking it onto the hedgehogs own spines, so rest assured it isn't dying or ill if you notice that!

I suppose you didn't take long to figure this out but hedgehogs are actually pretty chill, that one looks particularly tame and they won't really try to stab you with their spikes, if you scoop 'em up without applying pressure you can easily interact. Sometimes (very rarely) I see one on the road and pick it up to put it somewhere safe and never got hurt.

I have a hedghog of my own, that lil spiky girls past owner has clearly socialized her really well. They love meal worms, and weirdly enough get them high quality cat food for their main food intake, some crickets, and they love chicken! Do some research as they can be very delicate with temperature but knowing how you care for your animals she will be so happy and thrive

Don’t worry about the hedghog, they are very nice and their spikes will go down when they are calm. I own one and he is very easy to take care of. Also mealworms are a great snack for hedgehogs

The hedgehog seems fairly friendly already but the go to trick you want to do is occasionally let him sleep in a shirt you wear that day so he gets use to your smell.

Also, with hedgehogs you don't want to be tense. Handling them without gloves is also key to allow them to recognize you and will allow you to gain their trust. Make sure you wash your hands before and after handling her. You should try to get 15 minutes handling time in the early morning and late evening (when they're most active) to get the needed enrichment. You should also learn how to pick up specific cues that your hedgehog gives, I can't give you an exact one as they can change from hedgehog to hedgehog but my one used to used to huff (which is abnormal for them) when they wanted food, which this is usually a sign of defensiveness there was no flare up with spikes or biting from him. I would advise not using gloves when handling the little thing as getting used to the little pricks you might get from your hedgehog is key to getting better at holding and giving affection towards her. You might also not be exactly trustworthy with her yet as it takes a while for them to build that trust they need for you to pick them up and not try to attack you, however if they have already had human interaction it shouldn't take too long for her to warm up to you. If you do truly want to wear gloves though, use rubber, leather or those fancy gardening gloves with rubber palms and fingers to protect you from a sudden bite (as they do bite sometimes for absolutely no reason). If the hamster is showing signs of stress when you pick it up (curling into a ball and flaring spikes, along with the huffing, puffing and popping sounds it can make) outstretch your arms and hold it there. Wait for the hamster to begin to come out of the ball and explore your hands first before you bring it back closer to your body. Bathing. This is the most important part of this explanation. Hedgehog's love to bathe and they will find it a really relaxing experience for them. Put the hedgehog carefully onto or into a shallow pan or tub of water. Use a light and gentle stream of luke-warm water on the hedgehog and run it down the body. I have never heard of a hedgehog drowning from a proper bath but still use the basic precautions - such as never letting the water go above the hedgehog's mouth when it's curled up. When you are done bathing them, make sure you dry them off completely and carefully. It's advised you also get some snuggle time with the hedgehog afterwards for positive reinforcement. I hope this helps you in caring for you new friend!

Also make sure you REALLY focus on their feet when bathing them. They tend to run through their poop a lot and it can clump up into what owners call “poop boots” and that can lead to infection and other complications.

The little hedgehog is so cute! I just got one myself from the same situation, my dad no longer had time to care for him so i offered to take him. It's been such a unique experience but fun to get to know the little guy!
