I've always thought it was strange that modern animation is so simple and flat with more limited movement when the older hand drawn animated shows and movies were so much more detailed and expressive.
@joosoo7 ай бұрын
Because old cartoons from the 80s and 90s used hand painted cells. Early 2000s you start seeing the transition to digital painting. Nowadays, a lot of shows are using Toonboom etc. Designs are simplified and rigged onto a puppet. It allows the animators to keyframe faster by dragging around a puppet instead of hand-drawing each frame.
@DoveJS6 ай бұрын
This completely depends on which shows and movies you're referring to because simple and flat isn't mutually exclusive with expressiveness but doing anything more detailed takes a lot more time. That's why animated movies came out less frequently back then, it just took longer to get every frame completed, and there were generally fewer concurrent series within any given studio. It's also why there was a push for 3D; it's not necessarily less time-consuming or extensively more innovative but the 2D animators were trying to unionize, gained partial success in some places, and the people working in 3D still haven't successfully formed a union. Pretty much every animation company is also on the brink of extinction because of the way the industry handles payment. This is also why in general, most video games have moved away from unique animations and towards "immersive realism" because it technically takes less time, effort, and most importantly people dedicated to it, and literally no one seems to care as much about the animation whenever they review anything because on the whole most of humanity just takes animation for granted and don't view it as an art form in and of itself, even though animation, even in games, is fundamental for immersion.
@indigopines6 ай бұрын
@@joosooYou can still hand-draw with ToonBoom really beautifully, and some puppets can be really gorgeous. What it really boils down to is cheaping out on making the show look good, by Hasbro. It could look much better with the same tools and artists, but they probably wouldn't/won't give them enough time and pay.

Interestingly, the writer of G4 said that Twillight IS not immortal as an alicorn, and her lifespan wouldn't be much longer than the average pony. She wouldn't outlive all her friends (at least not by an amount of time that wouldn't be possible otherwise). So the writers of G5 just have thrown established canon completely out of the window. But at the same time, they want to stick to G5 being a sequel. xD

It's only one book, and the sequel is a short story which focuses on the humans, but I strongly recommend The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle if you still haven't read it yet! It's short, just 212 pages long in my edition. So many of the details in the movie are taken directly from the book, it's a pretty faithful adaptation, but they didn't include everything (mostly the songs, and they didn't include the town that Lir came from) but seeing everything laid out in words is a new experience. I don't know why, other than having a unicorn as protagonist in a young adult book, but it's one of my favorite fantasy books of all time personally. "The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea." That's the opening paragraph. Foreshadowing for the plot and the book overall lol. I'll admit, it has a lot of what could be considered legit purple prose alongside gentle jabs at purple prose but I like it because it isn't really trying to be pompous or snide so much as it's just having some fun while adding expressiveness. That may be hit or miss for some or trying too hard idk. :) The short story was good btw but if you feel the need to skip it, I don't think you'd be missing much. And of course no one has to read the Last Unicorn but for anyone considering it already, I'd recommend just doing it if you can find it in a library or a book store. I'd say the movie is also worth a rewatch as an adult, if you saw it as a kid, but that one duet doesn't get any easier to listen to, oof (it's an original song and not in the book btw, if memory serves me right.) And Molly Grue is incredibly relatable the older I get. "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?" That whole scene is in the book too.

My problems with G5 are that: 1) It completely ignores the fact that the three pony tribes have intermingled and had babies with one another. It's been confirmed in G4's "Baby Cakes"! Like, what happened to them after the tribes split? And what happened to ponies born within tribes outside their own? Did their parents leave with them and found an inter-tribe village with likeminded parents? Were the babies born after the split killed at birth? 2) It made the ponies just so stupid as to start hating each other for being of different tribes at the drop of a freaking hat! It's the same problem I have with the final conflict of G4! I swear, Hasbro is stupid and greedy!

G5’s relationship to G4 is like that of Rise of the TMNT’s relationship with TMNT 2012 save for the fact that Rise grew a sizable fandom once it found its footing. Both G5 and ROTTMNT came off of incredibly successful media that had a huge following young and old and ended up suffering due to how closely released they were to their predecessors’ finales and how hard they diverged from past media. At least Rise can stand on its own and has style and substance- all I’ve seen out of G5 is a show trying to pass itself off as Friendship is Magic 2 with none of the charm or heart that made FIM work.

They can change aesthetics (but they failed it anyway, especially comparing to G4), can restart whole "pony tribes hate each other" but its stupid to put it AFTER G4 storyline, undoing all what Princess of Friendship and all her gals do to establish friendship-ness in Equestria. If they want to do it in the same world and with this story, they much better be doing this a prequel, before Celestia and Luna united pony tribes. With set-uping plot points for G4 ponies, and using cross-time shenanigans when they need more direct approach. But they really gone Star Wars sequels way

I know it's tradition and all to reboot the franchise every decade, but I feel like Gen 5 needed A LOT more TLC before it was released, maybe it wouldn't have suffered so much (same opinion I have of Miraculous actually, although it could've used a different lead writer and whatnot too).

I feel like G5 just narrowly dodged flopping as hard as G2 did. And that part of that could be due to how Hasbro didn't make the ponies look like ponies. Plus. I feel like, at least in terms of the movie, they tried to copy Lauren Faust's idea of making the ponies go on an adventure. Albeit in a bit of a more toned down way in comparison to G4. And didn't quite stick the landing completely. There's a few other reasons why I feel G5 didn't do so well. But I'm not trying to write an entire essay in a comment, lol. So I might make my own G5 redesign and rewrite (potentially including it's own show bible but idk).

@@Corrector1 Ig the movie felt similar-ish to G4's second episode, Friendship Is Magic Part 2, in some aspects to me. It's hard to explain: But if I'm correct, then most of the earlier generations focused on villains that weren't ponies. Tirek, the smooze, Catrina, & the witches (with the witches being the first villains). Plus. I don't really think there was ever anything completely similar to the elements of harmony in any of the previous generations. Aside from the Rainbow Of Light. Meanwhile in the start of G4 & G5. Both shows have crystals that get their powers from ponies coming together (friendship/ unity), they both had a pony as their first villain (Sprout & Nightmare Moon both of which were jealous of their siblings), and the ponies defeated the main villain with the power of friendship (coming mostly from the main cast). But maybe it's just me who felt like those two are similar.

I don't hate G5, but calling a special episode Starlight Secrets with the colors of the original Starlight from G4 and not saying much about the episode until it was released was not a good move, and there was no way they wouldn't expect that people would have expectations about seeing something with the real Starlight or something about G4 in in general. They put themselves in a situation where they shouldn't go too deep into the history of G4 because this is supposed to be a new generation, but they also can't ignore G4 because G5 is also a continuation of G4 and fans definitely want to know what happened. Of course they have a lot of expectations because G4 was so big, but still, one of the reasons G4 was so good was because it was different from other generations and didn't have direct connections and wasn't a continuation of the events of the past generation.

@littlepuppy68227 ай бұрын
hiii im a newbie at digital art, what does vector layer mean?
@doggyspeak7 ай бұрын
@@littlepuppy6822 A vector layer is a type of layer in Clip Studio Paint that uses vector drawing. Vector drawing is basically using mathematics to create a line or shape (sort of like equations in geometry and trigonometry). You make those shapes using points, lines, curves, and angles instead of editing pixels on a canvas. Non-vector drawing is usually referred to as "bitmap" drawing, and is more similar to traditional art where you add media to a canvas. A simple version of this is like the line and curve tools in mspaint, you place a point and then place another point and the tool's equation draws a perfectly straight line between them. More advanced programs like the one in this video can save those points and render that line in real time, so you can go back and edit them, changing things like line width, brush type, corner type, and number and location of points. Vector graphics are used a lot in graphic design and computer animation because once you get the shapes made they can be made as big or small as you need them and still look just as sharp, and you can use things like nested layers and shape keys to automate a lot of animation and motion graphics. When people refer to "flash puppets/flash animation" they are talking about using vector drawing for animation (an early consumer program that used this technology was Adobe Flash, though I think G4 my little pony used mainly toonboom iirc.) It's a little intimidating to get started but most modern drawing programs offer some variety of vector drawing, like Photoshop's pen tool, or CSP's vector layers. They can be a HUGE help for precision work like lineart so I recommend learning a bit about the vector tools in your digital art program of choice! (Also sorry for the essay, I hope this helped!)

Was not expecting to get hit with a nostalgia train that I can't actually remember when you flashed the gen 2 ponies on screen. I wasn't a huge mlp fan ...ever... but we must have had a couple of dolls and maybe a book or something cause wow! Those shapes were hittin something in my brain, but I don't know what!

Oki, the beginning of the vid when you first started on Sunny I got serious nostalgia from The Last Unicorn. I hope I’m not the only one who remembers that movie, maybe some other 2000’s babies have watched it?

If you keep your lineart layer a vector layer, you can color the lineart so much easier by just selecting the lines and changing the color through layer settings. I learned that from the creator of Weirdogs and it improved my workflow!

When I first saw the designs for the G5 ponies, I was just really weirded out. While, yes, I was really used to the G4 style, that does not mean that I wouldn’t have liked the new designs, but now they’re just kind of weird. I honestly am kind of all for different kinds of art styles/designs and stuff, but I honestly don’t like the G5 MLP designs. Whenever I look at them, I just feel like something is really wrong and weird. (Also, really like the Cookie Run music in the background 👍)

Little tip from an experienced vector artist: NEVER use that many nodes in your lines! If you have to readjust something later, it'll be more tedious the more nodes you add. The strength of vector linework is in its adjustability. Really, for any given curve, you won't need more than three or four nodes at most. Also, the more nodes, the bumpier the linework, which isn't necessarily bad depending on style, but something to take note of.

The design at 10:49 is so pretty. It looks like something you would find in a Studio Ghibli or classic Disney movie (back when Disney made good movies ofc though) The sunny starscout redesign reminds me of the older mlp gens style. Its very cute and nosalgic too. ❤

In My Opinion, After So Much Thinking About It For a Few Weeks I've Worked Out What's Missing From G5 That Makes It Different From G4. Not Enough Villains, G4 Had Sooo Many Villains Enough To Fill a Town, Half Were Redeemed But In This Series We Get Like 3 Villains, Sprout, Opaline, Allura, And An Unseen New Villain Only Heard Of Once And Never Mentioned Again, But What This Series Really Needs To Keep Going Is New Menacing Threatening And Deadly Looking Villain. Heroes Vs Villains, Good Vs Evil, Epic Battle Scenes. They Put All That In This Series And More People Will Want To Watch It, And If That Doesn't Work Then May God Strike Me Down.

Yeah, the g5 designs weird me out. The front of the face eyes, how the snouts don’t work properly, it’s all so creepy. It’s offputting. There’s a reason G3 has my favorite proportions. It’s because it distinctly looks like a horse. Also yeah, the artist who did the mane 6 in the g2 style I follow their stuff on twitter too and it’s super cute. Top notch video as always, Calli. Thanks for putting words to what I’ve been thinking this entire time. I wish G5 would’ve kept them looking actually horselike. Like they could’ve looked at the horse art from other shows and used that as a model. Or idk kept them in line with the art style of the original artist they had create the designs. Just something. Anything. Keep up the good work, always enjoy the dive in your pond.

It’s really sad what’s happened to Gen5 it’s just so disappointing. I wish they would’ve just not put anything from Gen4 in, keeping it on its own and giving it a chance to fully make a new story. There are so many cool things they could’ve done, sure it might be scary to do something fully new after the game changer that was Gen4, but it would’ve been better in the long run.

You can actually change the line color in vector layers. Just use the 'Object" tool to select the lines, then under "Tool Properties" go to "Main color". Then you can select/change the color of the lines selected!

1st Picture is that The Last Unicorn? I love that film. :) 2nd Picture, oh, I love your MLP redesign; it's beautiful. It's a shame G2 was never given a chance. I do like the pony design for that brief era. Sadly, from what I read, people just thought they were knock-offs, as this was the first major MLP redesign following G1, and I find it a bit frustrating that people now often mistake G1's Pony Tales for G2, trying to fill the gap between G1 & G3. If I were a filmmaker, I'd love to make a 'multi-Gen' MLP movie.
