Yay! G5 has so much missed potential and the designs feel so... Disney-ified? Edit: About the cutie marks. I remember thinking the same thing about g5 ponies not having them and was actually genuinely disappointed when I realized they DID. I thought it would've been a really cool idea to see them all earn their cutie marks and figure out who they are. But alas. No such luck. Another missed opportunity.
@voilet-the-non-violet-vulpix5 ай бұрын
The idea that ponykind’s magic being gone ALSO would strip them of their magical ability to gain cutie marks would’ve been really cool. And given Misty a considerably better reason to believe only Opaline could give her a cutie mark, instead of “well, she said that’s how it works” And an episode centered around each new main character getting their cutie mark now that magic is back would’ve been EASY episode fodder for exploring & getting the audience attached to each individual. Hells’ kelp, I _really_ like that idea now…

One thing I've notice about Gen 5 naming is that it's a bit too real. Izzy Moonbow, Hitch Trailblazer, and Pipp Petals, while not bad names, it's just a mouthful for anyone to be saying over and over again. For example you wouldn't say "Do you understand the the math problem Stephani Renie?" you'd probably would say "Do you understand the the math problem Stephani?" Compared to names like Pinkie Pie, Apple Jack, and Rainbow Dash, where it's their first and last name (Although there are people who belive that it's just their first names), it easy enough for a character like Rarity to address them by their full name, while others might address them as Pinkie, Apple, and Rainbow. This isn't to say you shouldn't name characters like Gen 5's, we have cases like Twighlight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer being addressed by their first names, while only being addressed by their full names on special occasions (i.e: Introductions, ceromonious, or confrontation). If it were up to me I would change some of the Gen 5 names. It wouldn't be grand changes, just flipping their names around or removing their first/last name. Like I would take away Hitch's first name and address him as Trailblazer, his nicknames (as corny it might sound) could be Blaze or Blazer. Zipp and can be just be Princess Zephyrina and Pipp can be Princess Petal Pipp, so that they can keep their Pipp and Zipp nicknames. That's just how I would do it, I'm sure someone could come up with a way better solution to this.

My version of the G5 naming conventions will have fantasy first names & object & trait-related surnames. For example: Sola Starforce Aram Pathfinder Izi Nightshade Palana Perseverance Zara Stormrise

i really dislike their names, they sound like strange names id name my fantasy characters in when i’m 10 and think i’m a brilliant and original author. the names don’t sound magical at all and their power based names sound silly mixed with the more realistic names. overall just sounds silly and makes me cringe when i hear their names. then again i haven’t watched it so maybe i’ll get used to it - a lover of mlp ponies and shows

I feel like a lot of people say "oh you didn't give G5 a chance!" when in reality, we did :( honestly the writers/producers blew it. G5 is supposed to be a spinoff of G4, but there are so many plot holes and just overall rushed writing to a point where G4 doesn't feel like it's own spinoff, it feels like it's own separate generation. I know it's a show for kids, but from what I grabbed, G5 was supposed to be tailored to G4 enjoyers and a new demographic, therefore making more money, which is a good strategy! but they just aren't doing it right and there's a lot of aspects of the show that just confuse me to a point where I'm like "this just does not feel like It's tied to G4"
@sillycritter5 ай бұрын
i gave g5 a chance i love it and i would never go back the plot holes are really not that bad as you might think, and even though it takes place in the same universe as g4 it doesn't feel like it's trying to milk its success to me, it feels like its own thing the writers did a good job imo, it has problems but i can't bring myself to hate it, it's a fun guilty pleasure but i do genuinely love it

Its like if they wanted to go the sweet manipulative villain route they should have gone with a white coat and dark purple hair with cyan highlights and maybe don't braid her hair around her ears On the contrary if they wanted it to be obvious she was a villain a dark purple coat with cyan hair I believe would have been better then f****** white hair what the hell were they thinking and still that hairstyle would not work All they had to do was swap around the colors a little bit like what the hell!? Oh and of course change the hairstyle Thanks for coming to my TED talk I shall now watch the video

I actually disagree with you- her colors are fine and could work easily, it’s her texture, design and hairstyle that sucks. The braids are awful (like you mentioned) but she’s also weirdly textured in a way that makes her hair look more grey than white. Her bangs are strange as well.

On pip petals being an influencer, I agree with you that they shouldn't be using slang we'd be using and stuff. like you say it instantly dates them. But I don't mind her being an influencer as long as they were making made-up slang a horse might make. in G4 they all had those punny horse-related stuff, so why not in G5, right? for example a equersitan influencer might say stuff like: Hoof-tag in place of hashtags, and they could even show on the tv show the # icon being replaced by a U shaped thing that represents a hoofprint tag. or even better, refer it to as a hoof bump instead as they'd be "bumping" the topics that they are interested in the most, etc. It could be an catch-all term-- like how friends give each other hoof-bumps, online people give each other digital hoof bumps if they like something. and by using the horse version of hashtags, you are also giving the topic a bump. They're horses, they should act and think like it. they wouldn't use human terms after all. XD So Pip Petals should say stuff like: "Thanks for all the online hoofbumps, darlings! that concert was really last-minute, but I decided to just gallop with it, you know? and I'm really glad I did because that last song was a real harmony hit!"

I was thinking the same thing about the G5 names! I thought it was interesting that they seem to have first names and last names, while some characters in G4 only have one word names like Rarity or Fluttershy. Even G5 names made of two words felt like those words were related to add to the pony's "theme". I think that adds to the humanization of the ponies in G5 where they now kind of have first and last names. It feels weird to refer to a person by their full name, so you normally just use the first name.

To work on big companies, you NEED to be able to replicate the artstyle for the property they want you to design for. Look at League of Legends' splash art. They all have the same art style, but many are made by different artists. There needs to be a cohesive style for the branding, so the fact you can adapt for so many different looking shows is honestly quite incredible!

In regard to the bit at the end about your style vs a more “on model” approach, I like how OwONekko did specifically her Helluva Boss redesigns. She does the main design in her own style, and at the end makes a smaller quicker drawing of how her design might look in the style of the show. She doesn’t do all of her redesigns that way, but I thought it might be a good compromise between developing and demonstrating your own artistic vision and challenging yourself to draw and give tips for drawing in more canon-adherent styles. Also she’s a really cool creator and I think more people should watch her videos, so if you watch her redesigns and take some inspiration that’s a double win XD I enjoy your redesigns either way though, and for the record I definitely see your art as having a distinct style, but if you want to work on developing your style more that’s cool!

22:27 Well, not all the ponies are referred to by their full name. Occasionally yes, but mostly by the nickname or first name. Like Twilight Sparkle, she's mostly referred to as Twilight. And then there's Princess Cadence, her full name is Princess Mi Amore Cadenza. Guess it depends on their names too much of a mouthful or other reasons. I'm not an artist, but I feel like if you're going to redesign characters from a fandom, try to keep it faithful and when it's your own work, do it in your own style. If you feel like branching out your style to other fandoms, maybe do a fandom where there is no exact style if you're doing HUMAN designs. Like Cookie Kingdom, if you want to make a human version, use your style. Also, the talent of imitating an art style is just as important as having your own if you want to be hired for things like a show. It shows not just your skill by observing your own style, but you're flexible in switching art styles. Again, I'm not an artist so this is just my opinion as an observer.

With regard to art style and pursuing a professional art career, there's benefits to both flexing your own and working with others. Showing that you can operate in multiple styles will tell prospective employers that you're flexible and can work on their project, regardless of what it is. That flexibility is a big draw for big studios who work with variable styles depending on the project and need to have dozens of people working together to create a consistent final product. But having a strong style of your own makes you more appealing as an individual, which is a huge draw for smaller projects where you have a smaller team to coordinate, and especially indie projects where a distinct and unique style is part of the appeal. Art styles are one of the most intimidating and confusing aspects of the modern art scene, and it gets more complicated as you take different mediums into account...I got no useful advice on what to do about it, but it sure is a struggle.

It's kinda funny that Pipp has the interesting design and yet is one of the most hated characters due to the simple fact that she's obsessed with social media. Now that we're on that topic, I really just hate how modernized G5 is with its technology. It loses that fantasy element that G4 had, though the modern-day feel work in Equestria Girls because it's supposed to be this real-time high school setting. Here, it just looks over the top and really just hammers home the idea that "modern kids' shows isn't relatable until social media is thrown in," which is really dumb. I mean, is it really that hard to just NOT do that? Granted, I've only seen the new generation movie and not MYM or TYT, but still. It's like the ponies are ponies, but they live in the Equestria Girls universe. Really, the biggest problem G5 has is that its entire existence ruins the legacy of G4, and it just makes fans prefer G4 over G5. Like you said in your first G5 video, Hasbro shot themselves in the foot by making this a sequel to G4 instead of trying to make it it's own thing, but by doing that they just ruined everything G4 set out to do. In my opinion, if Hasbro really wanted to make MLP content thats still contained inside the G4 universe then why not makes some movies or specials filling in some of the mysteries fans have about the show? E.g. Celestia and Luna's/Cadence's backstory that's NOT relegated to the comics/books because I've not read a single book and it would be nice to get some answers to questions that's been left up SOLELY to speculation in the fandom

You know, I gave that new unicorn show a pass before, but after hearing a good review of it I'm interested in it again lol. As for MLP G5, I wish they didn't go with those faces either. It's uncanny but it's also looking like every other cartoon these days. I wish people weren't afraid to be different like Gen 4 was. That was part of the joy for Gen 4. It has such a unique and cute art style. It feels like 2d cartoons are trying to copy each other these days in hopes of the same success. But it actually does the opposite. *Also I love watching redesigns in any form. I'd love to see your own style too! I think either way is fine, but it is good to try and form your own style too. But art is subjective and there aren't any _real_ rules to it. Just theories and trends mostly. So try not to feel too pressured to do one thing or the other. Just do what _you_ feel like doing.🙂

31:08 ok that was deep, I have the same issue, I want to improve my style but at the same time I love trying others styles (emphasis on trying 😅) and feel kinda frustrating when doesn't look like the others or frustrating when mine doesn't look unic

Oh dont be scared to draw fandom art in your style. It may feel risky but really ppl love variety and creativity and I am sure your art style could bring another element to the characters they didnt have yet
