absolutely! in g5, i can pick out the connotations of the colours and how they relate to the characters. here, it feels like they just chose the colours for the sake of them being bright?

Yeah G4 colors fit each character's personality better like the mane 6 have great and very clear designs. Also the mane 6 had almost completely different colors while G5's main cast repeatedly use purple with only Hitch having zero purplish colors. I feel like if they just changed the extra purple for some other color that matched, it would've been so much better. They basically did that in the concept art so I wonder why they changed it.

everything about the concepts looks more distinct and with more character. white ponies are a hard sell, i prefer zipp's concept. it's interesting they were aware of the uncanny valley effect, but chose to ignore it in the end

The uncanny valley effect seems to be very hit or miss with people about this movie. I haven't had issues with it. I know others who haven't, and yet there are others who are completely weirded out.

@@o_oo_o1812 I don’t get it tbh. Like some ppl have complained they got eyebrows when the mane 6 also had eyebrows when their lids lowered. Or something extremely similar to them. Then again, the uncanny effect is something very hard to quantify. And very hard to not do.

Originally I was disappointed with the similar color scheme but Scootaloo is really nothing like Sunny. Like sure they’re nice but besides that they got really nothing in common. I guess maybe they got a similar go getter attitude, but that’s it

Scootaloo is more of a dare devil, risk taker with fangirlish tendencies and Sunny is more of the heart and optimistic type who uses her head. Besides color palettes they really are two different characters.

It drives me nuts how similar the main casts’ colors are!! What I liked about G4 was how diverse the cast was in terms of design and personality.. they could’ve been more original imo. I really wish they could’ve done something more with the designs, at the very least kept the little hearts and stars for Hitch and Izzy. ;_; and the feathered hoofs for the pegasi. The final result was underwhelming to say the least. Though it’s impossible for me not to like the movie because of how good it looks!

yeeahh they all felt kinda stereotypically girlie and bright? its all so one-note. Even Zip with her Rainbow Dash - ish personality has a very sparkly feminine design still in comparison. I wouldve loved seeing a Main Character unicorn with a more natural colour scheme for example.

Honestly! It's like their trying to look as different as possible with zipp design to the point that (IMO) it's a complete eyesore to look at, everything seems to clash with each other. Meanwhile 3 of the cast practically have the same colour pallete and are barely distinguishable, it's boring. I hope they change it even though at this point it's to late to change. I'm not looking forward to watching the new generation of mlp if that's how their gonna look like the entirety of the show.

@@sweetsartcorner I feel like they tried fusing the designs of the G3 and G4 together and this was the result. They gave G5 the over saturated and bright girly colors of fur from G3, but also tried giving them the iconic look and build that the ponies had from G4.

I'll be honest, I actually like Pipp's concept art where she had the curly blond hair a lot better than her final design, especially in terms of her wings, because I don't understand why her wings are so different from all the other pegasi, because her wing feathers look too fluffy to fly, along with the fact that their color doesn't match her coat color, making it feel out of place on her body, rather than fitting with it like the rest of the pegasi's wings. Also, I really wish they kept the hoof feathers, because those looked *amazing* on them! ^^

Yeah i agree, out of all their designs I liked Pipp's the least mainly because of the wings. They just look out of place compared to other pegasai and they look don't even look like they are part of her body, more like they were just pasted on.

If they had just put more "flesh" on the marginal coverts on the wings then it would have looked a little more natural. Or made them a bit longer. Her wings kinda just look like a bunch of long feathers sprouting from her shoulder blades with no bone structure. Like if you killed an owl, put it in a washing machine, and then dried it with high-pressure air and poofed it all up. Her mane style is pretty nice though since she is an influencer in the movie, but a curly blond Marlyn Monroe look would have been nice.

So Izzy went from unicorn Tree Hugger to unicorn Pinkie Pie. That is quite the transformation. I do love the fact that one of Pipp's concepts was modeled after Lottie from Princess and the Frog. But I can totally understand why they couldn't go with that one.

In MYM she’s literally just a copy paste version of Pinkie. Even down to her voice. Her voice was MUCH better in the movie than in MYM. Her voice in MYM is wayyyy too high pitched and worse to listen to. I was super disappointed when I heard it. The voice actors sound so similar yet so far off from the originals it’s almost running on the uncanny valley lane.

I think I remember reading that they axed the hoof feathers because they couldn't really get them to look the way they wanted to when the pegasi were using there hoofs like hands/arms.

Zipp’s concept art has more of a more punk look rather than the pop-punk tomboy we got in the film. Honestly though the only one whose concept design I like better is Izzy. I prefer the blue Izzy I’m not a fan of the purple and blue they gave her

I personally prefer movie izzy, but I do like concept izzy..she's kind of pretty, but I live for that mixture of purple and blue!! And I will agree on the zipp thing, the concepts are more fitting designs that they should've gone with instead of being so simplistic!!

Actually, Sprout's destiny being a farmer and him sucking at being a sheriff makes a lot of sense, earth ponies got so many technology they lost touch with their farmer/earthy origins and have careers that are not meant for them

10:09 That's insane concept art. It has the detail of being a Bridlewood high government building but lacks the size. Blue Izzy with the straight mane looks awesome. Straight maned Pinkie Pie looked fantastic, but the mood that had to accompany the look killed any joy in the viewer.

I honestly like the concept designs for Sunny a lot more than the final design. They just give her more of a personality and look more original compared to the pretty basic design they went with. I also think it would be a better idea to make the show 2D since they can get away with prettier back grounds and more exaggerated characters.

same! i have so many questions about the world building without magic in general. They clearly made the choice of setting this in the same universe as Gen 4 and their world was very dependent on magic, to the point where that was a whole double episode finale plot xD

That's actually sure. In Friendship is Magic, when Celestia, Luna and Cadence gave their magic to Twilight, their cutie marks disappeared. Same for every other pony when their magic was taken away

Yea it was initially supposed to be released in theaters with paramount, but that was ditched when theaters shut down last year and netflix gave them a time limit, so there was a bunch of cut content and re-working

I Love Sprout as a character, he has the mix of a hero and a villain inside, of him, which could make for a fun anti-hero who can sometimes be a villain, I hope he becomes part of the team :) i really like his design

Blue Izzy is really pretty but I’d have to say that I prefer her warmer purple design as it works a lot better with her personality than the cooler blue! Lottie/Marilyn Monroe inspired Pipp is definitely cute but I definitely prefer her final design as it works a lot better with her modern social media/influencer based personality whereas the 1920s vibe of the previous design sorta clashes 😅 I am absolutely adoring the detailed 3D art of Pipp with all the glitter, as well as the inventor/Ellie-esque Sunny, I’m sort of wishing they kept that idea 😅 feathers on pegasus’ hooves is the cutest idea ever! Overall, it’s really interesting to see all of the interesting concept art, really beautiful on the eye as well! And to answer your question, I love Phyllis, best g5 pony in my opinion lol

Imagine if the movie just surrounded around the characters at the VERY end of the friendship is magic Yknow, the ending with Twilight's student walking toward different creatures. Like a griffon and a buffalo and all that. Wouldn't it make more sense to have the concept of the movie go back to the racism toward actual OTHER creatures instead other types of ponies? Or is that just me?

The cardboard and glue part of the costume designs were probably put there so whoever was mapping/texturing the 3D model for it could get the correct textures to accurately portray it

One thing I try to keep in mind is that, although the show occasionally shows awareness to its... "older" audience, and sometimes there is a little bit of fan service, at its heart MLP is a children's show. So I don't expect huge intertwining story arcs with deeper or darker themes. I agree the story of the G5 movie was a bit meh, but for me it was more than made up for by just the sheer _quality_ of the animation. It was made with love, and it shows. Every scene is just gorgeous I could watch it a hundred times.

I wished they kept the more sunset color palette for Sunny. Like in the alicorn pictures the wings have the most "sunny" feel. Oh and a blue hippie Izzy... that would have been awesome, because the Izzy we got kinda felt like a Pinkiepie with a little more awareness (like not revealing that they had met Zip when before the queen), I wish Bridlewood had gotten more love though. Do the unicorns have any true society or do they just all vibe out in the forest? Its like they looked at their sketches and just threw it all away and just said "Forest with rocks." I don´t see much crystal used in the architecture, though I do like how the buildings are flush with the trees.

While I can understand why they didn't in the movie, for a while but I've been wondering for a while if at some point G5 will add another unicorn to the main characters at some point, so the 5 become 6, balancing out the team so we get 2 Earth Ponies 2 Pegasus Ponies & 2 Unicorn Ponies, much like in G4 and similar to what I suspect they tried to do with Starlight when Twilight become an Alicorn if this is the case I wonder if they use the blue 'Izzy' design and Cutie Mark for this hypothetical new character... Also looking at the image of Sunny as a full Alicorn I wonder if eventually, we'll see her actually become this, within the glowing wings & horn she now has, being a temporary foreshadowing and/or powerup before she turns into one properly or something...?

I wouldn't be surprised if Sunny is going to be Twilight's protege officially. Her name is a combination of Twilight's other students Sunny Starscout is a nod to Sunset Shimmer and Starlight Glimmer. Plus the mane 6 gen 5 concept art of earth pony Twilight is in play here. And the requirements for a regular pony ascending into being an alicorn are there. She united the pony tribes once again and brought magic back. I think the absence of another alicorn made the wings and horn temporary

The early designs of Hitch makes him look vaguely similar to Shining Armor’s coat and mane color. Whereas Sprout is like a short, scrawny version of Big Mac. I think Hasbro and Boulder Media purposely really drew too close to Disney’s animation designs. Not that that’s a bad thing, but the charm is all there.

I think I get the design of zipp it gives me vibes of what my first mlp ocs looked with an "unique design", and with many colors. I disliked Zipp design at first glance like I didn't like it, all of them were okay but Zipp no, but I think I understand it now little kids will find this more interesting as I did as a little kid too with this kind of design of fluorescent pony, if I could say, looks like that is something that youngers would enjoy and honestly it's not that bad it fits with her character very well.

I hope the concept art makes it to the series. Bridle Wood was barely shown. It was just 1 cortege and one tea shop. Also I wish they made Hitch's design a little different from Sunny. They look like brother and sister but they're not.

I think I may be one of the few who actually proffered grey spotted hitch and red zipp over what we got. He feels way too... background character-esque with his current design. As do most of the mane five, tbh. The pegasi are the only ones who really stand out from background ponies to me.

13:44 It's cool to see behind the scenes on this. I know those two "big challenges" were exactly my two biggest concerns. Screenshots were one thing but I had to see them *in motion* speaking and interacting to know if it "felt right." Even subtle changes like the ears in the G4 movie were enough to take some getting used to, so I was really impressed at how they managed to sell me on the 3D style by about the 10 minute mark of the movie.

5:25 I love the top right concept art for Hitch! Especially with the little star on his chest awee! Kinda wish they went for that instead. Same with Sunny's old concept art where she looks like Ellie from Up as a little girl. So adorable! they would have looked so much more unique too. Sunny looks a lot like Scootaloo and Hitch,,,idk his design is kind meh now compared to what it could have been XD I still love them all a lot though

As for the concept art and expressions (that Pipp never got to have ^^) - the idea is to give the people who work on each character an idea of each pony, without them having to read a whole description. It's a lot more like a.. Pinterest Mood-Board. Everyone's supposed to have the same idea of what the character is like - since the process itself involves >5-10 animators where say.. one makes the very basic sketch, one makes it cleaner, light&shadows, colors,.. there can't be a "my Pipp looks like this, and tomorrow when X Y and Z work on her, she looks entirely differently" ^^ Think of it like a photo album of somebody else's kid. They say "here, this is what she's like" before you babysit her next week. Do you see a sassy child? A wild one? A creative one? Sad?

Now that I see this I’m so upset we’ll never hear anything new from the mane 6 again, except for little snippets of twilight in the new show, I’m also upset spike wasn’t in the opening for the mlp gen 5 movie. Even if I didn’t really like spike, I’ll still miss him like the other ponies. And also knowing that the mane 6 that I grew up with is now “dead” kills me inside. Bye bye childhood.

Not true at all... These are professional designers, not art kids playing with colors. There's definitely a reason why they were changed and the final product looks great even if the concept art also looked great.

@@ladylynx9891 Whatever the reason, I think the final look is far from the best one and you can't change my mind on that. The color palette for the main characters is far too redundant (too much orange/beige and too much pink), not to mention that most of the concept sketches had tons more personality (with more diverse manes, accessories and nuances), so I entirely maintain my point.

There is something I dislike about the overall design of the ponies, their back legs bug me so much. Real horses have their backs going up as well as the old mlp, but in G5, their backs go lower. Everytime I see the G5 ponies run or even walk, it looks weird. The weight doesn't exactly make sense. Maybe it's just me nitpicking though, glad to hear that everyone hates the color schemes and personalities of the G5 cast lmao

The only things that sucks so hard usually about people who didn't enjoy the movie- Is how much they shit on the 3D. Like they call even the 3D itself absolute garbage, not 3D FOR MLP garbage. It's such a disappointing view in the art that took so much time, skill, and knowledge- To me it doesn't matter how much you dislike MLP in 3D. There's no denying just how well the 3D itself was done detail wise.

Much better stuff than some of the original ideas where they had considered just swapping around the M6 (Twilight Earthy, Fluttercorn, Pinkie Fly, etc.). That said, on I want to say IG there was a thing where the G5 earth pones were designed using Celtic-inspired tattoos and stuff which was pretty darn cool.
