My Problem With Keurig's My K-Cup Universal Reusable Grounds Basket
♦♦♦♦
BTW, I personally own every modern Keurig sold in stores and I help customers understand the differences between them all to the best of my ability. You can see the current list of Keurig brewers that I recommend to people on this page: www.topoffmycoffee.com/best-k...

I use paper filters specifically for the reusable K cups. After each brew, toss the paper filter with the grounds and put in a fresh filter.

OMG, I finally found someone who had the same idea that I was thinking. When I get around to purchase a Keurig K- Supreme and get the My K cup with the 5 holes, I will continue to use a paper filter inside of the K cup. Its easy to clean, no mess. Just take out the filter.

@OneDayAfterAnother I mean the 3rd party small paper filters, sorry about that. That is what I use. The website is Perfect Pod. Then click on products and click reusable cups with paper filters. But it make the clean up from the coffee grounds better for me. If any coffee grounds in K-cup then I take a small piece of napkin to clean the rest of the grounds out. Then rise. I try not to get a lot of coffee grounds down the drain.

I worked in a coffee shop in the mall, second floor, when I was younger. Coffee grounds down the sink caused the pipes to bust and the business underneath us to close until repairs were made it was a nightmare for them. Since then, I remain cautious about coffee grounds going down the drain. I like to save money and reduce house hold waste-buying less plastic and paper products- so I got this reusable kcup. I have this issue with the grinds sticking inside the reusable filter and then having to rinse them out. Thanks for the video! The reply of your viewers has given me some ideas on how to get around this.

I have 2 reusable filter pods. It gives the coffee enough time to cool between brews, as I make coffee around every 45 minutes on days off. Take one out once it's done brewing and set it where you'll remember to clean it, the second one near the coffee maker where you can easily start your next cup. Also, I save the grounds in a bag and once the bag is filled (sandwich bag) I just toss the grounds either into the garden, my yard, or the compost bin.

Hi Brian thanks for all your posts!.... The way I solved the problem you're having is I started using the "Java Jig filters" inside of the "My K cup". When finished brewing, simply pop the top on your My K Cup and the Used Grounds are all contained and stay together in the JJ filter! Used grounds easily pour into your storage container waiting to go outside to the compost pile. Have a safe and blessed holiday season!!!

Dump and rinse. I have several pods handy to make a second cup soon after. Not a problem. Also, I use Reverse Osmosis water. No problems. The reusable pods allows me to try several different brands of coffee and keep two or three on hand at all times. Decaf, regular, strong, or mild. But I did take your advice to pay more attention to cleaning the machine and rinsing more often.

I also tap the universal filter on the inside of the waste basket under the sink. For the remaining caked grounds, I clean those out with an old tooth brush. I just had an idea! What about a battery operated Spin-brush tooth brush to make it clean out the packed coffee grounds quicker?

Dude, no offense intended, but cleaning out the filter is a 1-2-3 operation. I keep an empty coffee can on the counter and tap the filter on the inside rim of the can and then rinse out the filter and done. When the can gets about half way full, dump it. I think the most practical, annoyance free solution for you, is to go back to using disposable pods.

I pull it out immediately without letting it cool. Take the lid off and rinse, take the bottom and rinse, then tap the filter part into the trash. It all comes out just fine/better for me when I do it right away. It is possible you are overfilling it or it is packed too tight if you are having issues getting the grounds to come out right away. You do have to be careful because the grounds are hot, but it has never burned me. You could always use a paper towel to hold it if its too hot, or as someone else recommended, cool it with cool water before dumping.

I take a paper towel take it apart and set the filter upside down on the paper towel, and tap the bottom and sides with the end of a butter knife. It doesn't take much and it comes out rather well rinse and your ready to go.
@TopOffMyCoffee
@TopOffMyCoffee 3 жыл бұрын
You might be right about me packing it too tight, I never fill it over the max line but when I get it to the max line the grounds always tightly fill the entire space when the brew process is over. When I brew french press I usually put a paper towel in the bottom of the sink and then rinse it out with water, the paper towel catches the grounds to keep them out of the pipes and the water just flows through. That's what I always want to do with the reusable k-cups but I always find myself having to the tap the clumped grind out... perhaps the max fill line should be lower to keep the grounds from clumping in there. Thanks for your thoughts NicholasNDB

Certainly the most obvious solution but I don't want to send the grind down my plumbing; I'm sure it works just fine for many people but I have chosen to not discard into the plumbing if at all possible. Thanks Evelyn!

Ohh very interesting technique! It reminds me of my french press cleaning technique of discarding the spent grind intot he paper towel instead of banging straight into the garbage can and making a mess each and every time. I'll try the butter knife tap today and I'll also try using less grind like Nicholas said above. Thanks for your input!

I normally have two cups of coffee a day so what I found works best for me is to have two of those. Once I brew my first cup, I take the mesh portion out of the cup and leave it on the counter by the sink, and by the time I go to make my second cup mid afternoon, the coffee has already dried out, it empties out a looot easier and by then, all I have to do is rinse out and leave it out to dry for the next day. (I do the same with the second cup of coffee, the next morning),

Exactly!!! In addition, since ANY preparation of coffee that does not include a paper filter has that disgusting sludge in the bottom of your cup, the EZ cup filters prevents this. If you also use the EZ Cup filter holder, you can ditch the special Keurig reusable pod holder and use the disposable pod hold which increases the versatility of your machine.

I've used mine back to back. I take it out immediately and just kinda bang the side it on my trash can and they do come out. Don't hit it so the bottom (open portion) is hitting a bowl or the trash. Then I rinse it in my sink and dry the outside so I can stick it back int eh black holder. I already have to clean the latte cup on my k cafe so I do them together immediately after brewing

Wow! It takes literally 30 secs to clean it out. Most of the time I wash it down the drain. Or use it like you said, as compost. I'm not a tree hugger by any means, but K-cups are a huge environmental problem. Despite what they say about recycling them, most are not and end up in a landfill somewhere in the world. Just think of one household with 2 coffee drinkings that has two cups daily. That's 730 plastic/foil k-cups in a landfill. And with 10 million plus units out there, that 7.3 billion cups.
@TopOffMyCoffee
@TopOffMyCoffee 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you are completely right, 30-seconds to clean and it's better for the environment and because the coffee tastes better using them... I still hate doing it though; we all have our things about us that don't make sense I guess. I'm going to experiment with the My K-Cup filter papers as another commenter suggested; that seems like a good idea for me to get over my disliking of cleaning the reusable filter basket.

@TopOffMyCoffee 3 жыл бұрын
Someone else suggested I overfilled it too but I can assure you I did not fill it over the max-fill line. Perhaps the max line should be a bit lower as the grind does expand when it gets wet. I'm planning to experiment with the refillable k-cup with paper filters soon so I'll also try different fill levels while testing; hope you catch those vids when they come out.

I use the same sorta filter basket in a basic 4 Cup Coffee Maker. Which is really 1 1/2 Cups each morning with my Mug. It works good at first for about 3 weeks. Rinse it out Everytime I use. Not a problem. Very easy. But it gets to a point where coffee grounds stick to the screen so bad. The maker works if you put weight on the top lid, and I use a "Coffee Toad" a ceramic toad I painted to hold it down flat. I've tried Dawn Soap, Laundry Detergent, Bleach, Vinegar and Baking Soda. Nothing cleans the screen once it's too dirty. So needs replaced every 3 weeks. However, so far, it works better using paper towels as a filter. So much better. Next month, will Buy some paper filters. Should be fine. The Keurig, however, I would recommend just Bite the Bullet, rinse it out each time. Very easy. Especially if anyone else uses it also. Just outta respect. Also, a good chance just using the disposable flavored cups without the filter basket works better. How I've always made using a Keurig. Good luck friend. If ya like it, appreciate it. Doesn't work, find a way to make it work, or share with someone that will use. Pay It Forward in life. 🙏 💙

I personally twist the top off first and then take the filter and bang it in the trash can. I try to wash it at minimum once a week, rinsing is probably the best after dumping but I personally just add fresh grounds to brew my next cup. I don’t mind if there’s a couple grounds left from before. Also just a friendly reminder that using this filter is MUCH cheaper and BETTER for the environment. Less plastic waste.

I am a major coffee drinker. I have three of the my K-Cups and several, (I won't say how many because it's embarrassing 😂) of the regular reusable K-Cups. I really don't care for the grit and the sludge that's left in the bottom of my cup so I also use the K-Cup size filters. They look like little coffee filters. I also own a French press, it's actually, in my opinion, the absolute best type of coffee there is. The coffee that comes out of the French press has that layer of "crema" that I enjoy..

You've inspired me to give those little My K-Cup filters a try; although some people don't care about washing grind down the drain I do and I also really dislike cleaning the cup out but if I had a paper filter to simply lift out then I might be inclined to use the reusables more often. I also agree with FP; it's amazing when made well. If I want the feel of coffee then french press is the best; if I want something stronger then Moka it is.

We have been using reusable for maybe 5-10 years not sure. We have around 5-10 reusable baskets and love it. We tap the grinds in the garbage disposal drain and purchased a I believe is a baby bottle basket to put in the dishwasher. With 5 to 10 of them we always have a clean one available. Doing it this way we accomplish 2 things. One I am not restricted to what's available as far as coffee brands. Two I have reduced my cost from say on the low side 25 cents to as high as 75 cents. I also grind my own beans so there is that.

I did not like the way that the Keurig reusable cup worked either. I solved the problem by buying Luminoa Innovations DeliBru single serve reusable cups. The reusable cups come in a package of 4 and I bought 2, so I have 8 little purple cups. These fit perfectly in the Keurig and you don't have to take out any part of the machine. These are mesh like the Keurig and because of the cleanup issues, I also got some BestBev disposable coffee filters (300 filters) These little cups and filters work well. I can use any kind of coffee that I want to. The filter pops out easily, but you do need to rinse the inside of the cap. I read somewhere before buying these cups, that you need to get a reusable cup that has a rim on the bottom so the cup doesn't sit flat on the machine. Not perfect but found that it works much better than the Kuerig option.

I don't have a problem cleaning mine out - I just dump - but the grind you show are WAY to chunky to get a good coffee. It definitely need to be finer. Most ground in bag coffee is fine. If grinding auto-drip works best. BUT I have TWO issues with the new 5 hold My K-Cup. First is that if you don't PROPERLY put the lid back on so it is tight, you find coffee grounds flying all over and into your cup. You need to be very careful. The second "issue" is that - unlike the older 1-hole - reusable plastic My K-cup, there are no "knockoffs" from China or else where. Keurig must still have the patent and I would like to have a second one but not pay $9.95 at Walmart (they are $14.95 everywhere else). The one hole ones are less than $3,00. Anyone else have this issue. I dumped my old Keurig for the new Supreme model when QVC put them on Black Friday sale.

Agree it is annoying to be green sometimes. However a few taps against my wastebasket does the trick ! If you don’t mind me saying...it looks like you over filled it! Mine has a max line on it so maybe that’s why you are struggling? 🤷‍♀️

Try cleaning the needle and where the pod fits, CAREFULLY. I use a q-tip by the upper needle and in the corners with some water or vinegar on the q-tip. And I fill it a little below the max line, not just on it as I've had that problem. Hope it helps

Simple! I tap the bottom of the basket with the back of a spoon right into the cute compost container that lives on my counter. It's as easy as coring an apple core or peeling a banana. I empty the grounds right after making a cup; thereby savings 30 seconds of dumping/ rinsing, when I make my next cup. Using the reusable basket (rather than popping in a K-cup) seems a small price to pay to reduce non-recyclable waste that future generations will have to contend with because I was .... well... might I say... lazy?

Paper filters specifically for the keurig cup or just paper filter for normal coffee makers? This sounds like a good solution!
@REXXSEVEN
@REXXSEVEN 2 жыл бұрын
If you remove the filter soon after making the coffee turn it upside down over the sink and run warm water over it, the coffee grounds will fall right out easily. If you're not ready to do this right then, make sure you leave the filter inside the machine until you're ready to wash it so that way the grounds won't dry out and be harder to release from the filter when you run water on it.

I find that the best time to clean them is IMMEDIATELY after use. Just don't put the bulk of the grounds down the sink. Keurig wants you to buy their disposable cups because they don't make any money from reloading. So why should it be easy to clean?

Most people that don't want to deal with anything like this just get in line at the Starbuck's drive-thru LOL. It's the price you pay to have something a little better than what the masses have. I roast and grind my own and it is worth the small effort it takes by all means. Having to clean out a reusable K-cup when you have plentiful clean running water and a disposal at hand is laughable.

With the posting of this video, we can officially declare you NOT a coffee snob. Why? If you have difficulty being motivated enough to "clean it out in the sink" (like, what, you SCARED of your sink?), it is obvious that making coffee by any other method will pose just a much of an existential threat to you safety and convenience as your K machine-which, as mentioned, is apparently the only method you use for making coffee. But, hey, it's OK. It's convenient. Oh, except for having to clean the re-usable K-cup thingy. Good luck with that ... and your sink. PS: I still cannot tell if you were being sarcastic about seeming terrified of having to "clean it out in the sink" or not. You seemed totally alarmed and overwhelmed.
