I never buy coffee in K-cups. I bought some plastic reusable K-cups that you fill with your own bagged coffee. You can buy your favorite higher quality coffee and save a lot of money and put less waste in the landfill. You can tamp it down to get more grounds than the amount in a prepackaged K-cup so your coffee will be richer instead of watered down. They last forever-I’ve been using mine for around 12 yrs, and they’re still like new. I think I paid about $6 for a set of 2. The only downside is having to empty the grounds and rinse out the cup, which is trivial when you consider that you’re getting a better-tasting cup of coffee than you can get with pre-filled K-cups.

I have the Keurig 2.0. I took all the loose parts out. Soaked in vinegar and hot water. Then, scrubbed each item. As well as wiped the inside of the machine. Where the part comes out. Used a little vinegar and hot water for that also. When soaking the pieces, you'll see it's getting cleaned when you see vinegar bubbles in your water/vinegar solution. I washed with soap and rinsed all parts over and over, rinsed with hot water. I crossed my fingers and put all the pieces back. Making sure, when I removed the needle to point the needle in the direction, I found it. PS: I was this close to throwing it in the trash. But she's a working. Yippee! Thank you for your video. 🤗

After 12+ years of roasting coffee, trying to find an effective and profitable way to put our coffee into pods, found a method in Nov 2021, I cannot reveal all the steps we do, it took a LOT of science to figure it out. It also takes a LOT of time and money to produce top-quality coffee pods. Not only because we use the finest, freshly roasted beans, but, all the other things you mentioned, the high quality plastic pods (which are 100% recyclable), the lids, and our exclusive method of sanitizing and sealing the cups so the coffee stays fresh, and, we ship direct to consumers, be it at home, office, you name it. I really appreciate this video. Since we introduced our coffee in pods, we have had a number of people contact us who have problems, 9.999 times out of 10, it ends up being due to the errors and issues you have just mentioned in this video, so, thank you so much for taking the time to making this video! We were going to do our own video, which we probably one day will do, but, you saved us a lot of time with exactly the info people need who are wanting the best from the K-cup makers. And, even though you mention other coffees here, and talk specifically about pricing, what to expect to spend, I now direct my customers who have issues to this video in particular! I agree, don't use the cheap pods...the coffee inside is terrible, and you can definitely taste the plastic residue after brewing. It is a horrible after-taste and probably not a healthy thing to drink! My only issue is, I disagree with your price point statements, you've likely not tried our coffee, so, I get where you are coming from, but, our customers think ours is the best they have ever had, and, we are north of $1 per pod. We have to be. We just wouldn't make enough profit otherwise, which is why we are in business. Granted, your video was shot in 2020, green bean prices were much lower then. In today's market, people should expect to spend north of $1 per pod for high-quality stuff. Today, Mar 2022, prices on everything are way up. It would be great if you could add to the end of this video an update and state more current pricing. BTW - Our pods are 100% recyclable (the plastic and lid) and compostable (the grounds and internal filter). We chose to use the recyclable plastic versus the one you showed that is just open at the bottom due to the fact that there is no real good way to keep those pods fresh once the bag is open, and the fact is, even though those claim to be compostable, they either need to be sent to a special place that will do that or, it is a lot of messy and inconvenient work to do yourself. Please let me know if we can put a link here to our website for those who wish to find us. Look forward to viewing more videos from you! Mike

Rather than use any pods I buy whole bean coffee, grind it myself, then fill a reusable pod. My Keurig came with a caraffe so I use an appropriate larger pod which gives me a full three mugs of coffee every morning. If I do want a single mug later in the day I also have a couple of regular size refillable pods I can use. And note, the only trash I create with this method is the used coffee grounds which I save and fork into my potting soil for my herb and vegetable garden.

Back in 2007, when I got my Keurig B60 Special Edition (which I still use every day to this day), I started the very first Yahoo User Group for exchanging unwanted flavors of K-Cups. I called the club The K-Cup Exchange. There were thousands of members exchanging k-cups and lots of brewing tips and tons of coffee talk. Every time Green Mountain would release a new flavor, they'd send me boxes to give away. And many online k-cup retailers would send machines and countless boxes of k-cups to have contests with. This worked out for sellers and members alike, but it began to be a ton of work for me with my day job and all. Alas, I gave ownership of the group to a few of the earliest members and it soon fell apart. Oh well, it was a great ride for many. My B60se is a reminder to me of that great group every time I brew a cuppa joe.

@@Jennifr1966It's all yours! It was a brand new group back in 2007, which on Yahoo, there were only followers for each group, not the person starting the group. Hence, the group began fresh, and it took off fast. There were other groups for K-Cups, so my group had competition, but each group offered something different. My group was successful because I actively sought support from Keurig and Green Mountain, then smaller K-cup manufacturers started joining the group and having giveaways. It took off like crazy. 6 years later it just became too much work. I had never made a single dime doing it, and Green Mountain wasn't interested in buying the group or paying me to run it, so as it started to decline 6 years later, I had to let it go and get on with life. Plus, Yahoo was ending their Groups and I had other Groups that I needed to transfer to other places. It was a great ride while it lasted.

Slight correction: while vinegar DOES have some disinfectant properties due to it's acetic acid, it's really a crappy disinfectant. I use it in a Keurig due to it's solvent effect, to keep scale from building up . CITRIC acid, used in the Keurig descale solution, works better to keep the water flowing. After a vinegar run I also find I have to rinse with several TANKS of water to get rid of the vinegar odor in my coffee.

I own the K155 and have not seen the puncture problem with this machine at all. I sometimes prefer milder coffee but will try the 6 oz instead of 8. Still my fav cup is Maxwell House, HouseBlend and find it delightful with some creamer and sweetener even with 8 oz of water. My machine does not have a strong button but I bought the Keurig precisely for an occasional milder cup. I would never use tap water. We have very hard water. Strangely enough, the taste with filtered water was much improved from that of bottled water. As for washing, I agree and is only common sense. Great advice on cheap generic K-cups! With this said, over the years I’ve bought different machines with the Nespresso being my least favorite. My Italian made espresso machine is great but when a milder cup is what I want, it’s the Keurig. I have also learned ways of preparing different K-cups to suit my taste. For a Cafe Escapes mocha, for example, I brew only 4 oz and add another 4 oz of warm milk. It’s a matter of preparing it to your liking to succeed with most machines.

As a person who works at Keurig. If you look at the side of the k-cup itself it will tell you the exact time it was made in military time. Most people don't notice this because it's lasered in very faintly. The layout on the k-cup should look something like this BUBD 010923 NA PL098 08 19:55 1009 The first two lines are essentially just where the k-cup was made essentially. While the last two was the time that it was made. 1009 is actually 10/09. For some reason they don't put the year on the print. But it doesn't actually matter because they won't sell k-cups after they have been sitting for a year. So I assure you those cups are not more than a year old as it would essentially be expired past that point.
@samuelgreene1148 Жыл бұрын

Great video. I always use the strong button and after switching to the bottled water, I definitely noticed a difference in my coffee. I do think most people's machines don't last long because they don't do proper routine maintenance. I had my first machine for about 5 years and only upgraded because I was gifted a new machine. My current machine is still going strong and I've had it for just shy of 4 years. We use it 2-3 times a day.
@WrestlingErnestHemingway Жыл бұрын
The main reason their machines doesn't last long because they get in the bad habit of turning the power on & off burning out the heater function & switch. They turn it off at night or on & off after every use. It ruins the machine doing that. The solution is to keep the Keurig machine's power on 24-7 with a full tank of water. And only turn it off (and empty the water tank) when going away on vacation. And of course de-scale & clean it twice a year. It doesn't use up any more power leaving the machine on 24-7 than any old standard coffee maker did with a clock or timer on it.

However at work I do use a Keurig with the Bold setting strictly for the convenience. Your video is Excellent.....I follow your cleaning suggestions regularly....as well as the use of filtered water. I can't stress the importance of cleaning these machines especially at work where I've seen slimy gunked up residue leftover from gross vanilla bean or French vanilla or other " Flavored " coffee pods. Our Keurig is the higher end which has a built in filter....multi Oz setting as well as Bold setting. It also has an easy to remove & clean cartridge/tray ..which All makes for pretty good coffee....NOT GREAT...but Pretty good. Lastly you are correct on the cheapo pods. Ugh. Also I've found the hot chocolate pods are a disaster....they gunk up and many times will cause the machine to malfunction with an error code. As for pods...Ive tried them all and yes Personal taste is unavoidable....but I have found that "Colombian" flavor pods give the best " Coffee strength" of all the Colombian Brands...I have found " Gevalia Colombian " the ABSOLUTE BEST....followed closely by...MCCafe (Yes McDonald's) Colombian K-cups.....both even at 10oz Bold setting give a damn good "Convenient " cup o ☕️ !!

Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

A bit of unsolicited advice, but the Keurig hot cocoa pods are basically just super concentrated versions of the instant powder. I buy the swiss miss packets, put them directly in the mug, and then just run the Keurig to make hot water. It comes out slightly pressurized so it helps to dissolve and stir the cocoa, but you definitely still need to stir it well. It will save you a bunch of $$ if you use the pods for your grandson often. ☺️

What I do to make sure that I get most out of my coffee is to fill the water at the eight ounce mark. When the coffee starts pouring, I let the first five to six seconds of the brew pour into the the tray, or wait until the liquid turns significantly dark than when it first comes out, since it is mostly water and not so much coffee. When the liquid turns dark, that is when I place the cup under the stream.

Hi Great video, thanks. Two points about the cups that don't have the plastic cup: 1) they are fully biodegradable. I have seen the time laps video of these and they totally broke down to dirt before the meat on a chicken bone was gone (both in the same shot). Even the ring that looks and feels like plastic is actual made of compressed coffee been shells. 2) they are much fresher coffee. The sealed cups need to be fully staled before they can be sealed up otherwise the off gassing will pop the foil tops. If you look at the silver bag these come in there is a vent / valve to release the off gasses ... because these are much fresher coffee. I used to work at a grocery chain and knew the coffee people and got the inside scoop. Like you say, never as good as a pour over or press, but the best of the "instant" options. And yep, the cheep discount stuff is cheep and horrible. I like a larger coffee but see your point on smaller size with only 11 g of coffee. Thanks

Also, a vinegar cleaning really helped the blah flavor and slower brew time I encountered so highly recommend that. Don't forget to run plain water through the machine two or three times after the vinegar though. Otherwise yuck.

We also use a refillable cup. I put a regular coffee basket filter in it . That makes disposing the grounds a lot cleaner AND has the side benefit of filtering the coffee. The basket filters cost around $1.50 for 100. NOTE:, Coffee grounds make good compost and are very high in nitrogen. The paper filter will also compost down well so I just throw the filter and grounds into a used 30 oz coffee can for recycling later. When the can is full I just take it out and toss in the garden.

We use our brita from the fridge. Cold is best. Room temperature water is not. 4- warm up your cup/mug before brewing. Put some hot tap water in there and warm the mug. Empty when warm and then brew. 5- always use the strong button. 6- don't over fill the grinds in making a kcup. Leave some room. A packed kcup won't taste any better and you'll end up spending more on coffee. Doing these things will definitely improve flavor. Don't use any plastic kcups. They're all terrible and not environmentally friendly at all unless you're willing to empty the grinds afterwards and recycle just the plastic. Use cartridges and filters and your favorite coffee.

11:00 You say you don't like overspending but that's exactly what you're doing. All premade K-cups are expensive, even the "cheap" ones are overpriced compared to buying ground coffee in a can. I use reusable K-cup filters and use whatever ground coffee I buy in a can, or grind my self. This allows me to put more coffee into the filter than pre-made K-cup would have. It's more environmentally friendly since you're not using single-use plastic K-cups going into a land fill. I still keep pre-made K-cups handy when friends visit, or something, but I pre-fill the reusable K-cup filters and store them in a simple air tight container next to my knock-off Kurig. This makes it just as convenient as a pre-made K-cups, and it takes less than a few mins to fill up 4 of them when it's time to do so.

Great video. I was lucky enough to have a good friend send a first generation Keurig coffee maker to me in Canada. Green mountain was the only coffee affiliated with Keurig at that time. She also included two re-usable capsules to enable using any coffee brand you wanted to. That machine is still in use. Here's what I did. Once every three months, add vinegar to the reservoir and run it through with a full reservoir of fresh water for a good rinse. Clean the head often, no longer then two weeks. Learn what coffee suits your taste and stick with it. I have always used water from a Brita pitcher kept in the fridge. I learned the puncturing the pod first a year ago after getting grounds in my cup, I thought it was a faulty pod branding issue. I was wrong but figured it out. I liked it for the ease of use. I have used presses, I have a Nespresso machine by Breville that I love, as much as I like some of Nespresso's brand coffees, I am a die hard Lavazza fan and their pods go on sale fairly regularly. I work in an Italian based community so the stove top Bialetti is a staple and it's always Crema e Gusto from Lavazza. Thanks for the video :)

I think the quality of flavor of coffee you get from a Keurig while it may not be as good as a press or pour over or stove top model is highly dependent on the pods you’re using. Too many of the pods are way too mild for the coffee that they claim to be creating.

They taste mild because they only contain enough coffee for 6 ounces, not the 8, and even 12 ounce cups of coffee that some Keurig users try to squeeze from them. I drink too much coffee for this to be practical. I set my drip coffee maker every work night to have 24 ounces of coffee brewed by the time I get out of bed in the morning as I don't want to wait even seconds for coffee. I pour it into a 24 ounce stainless steel coffee mug, and take it to work with me.

I switched to Keurig years ago because I think it really does make rhe perfect cup of coffee every time. I always found normal coffee makers and French Press leave you with sludge at the bottom. Or realistically, by the time you drink the last cup in the pot, it's bitter from being on the heat too long. Turn down the heat and it gets cold. Nice work. You have a good sense of engineering, I see. That helps when you are trying to trouble-shoot a coffee maker. As always, coffee drinkers have very different ideas when it comes to the relative "strength" of a cup of coffee. Also, I just bought my first Keurig two months ago. The company keeps refining the design, so therefore I can easily see why the need for more and more "how to" Keurig videos. My brewer seems to be a lot simpler with less room for error or clogging. I have no doubt a French press or drip pour-over would make a better cup of coffee, for the true java aficionado. I believe that method is for people who go through fresh coffee beans like crazy because they really enjoy drinking several cups a day. I notice with even some of the nicest ground coffees available, they tell you to go through the bag within 2 or 3 weeks. If you aren't able to do that, the taste of the coffee is so degraded! Therefore I will take the Keurig because I can only drink one cup of coffee per day.

Because the actual "cup" size of American coffee for years and years was 6oz, then people started using mugs for these "single cup" coffeemakers, and those hold more than twice that amount, so it does make a difference on brewing, but if it is what you are accustomed to you would not notice a difference.

@@lindabrown544 Well, Keurig calls it a "cleansing brew" - it's a where you just run clean water through so it can give a general cleaning before you actually brew your cup.

1st, The debris left in the machine wont end up in your next cup. The proof is that it didnt go through into the last cup. If it went into your next cup, it wouldnt be left in the machine in the first place. 2nd, If you like the taste you get from a brand, it doesnt matter what you paid for it. Doubling the cost doesnt change the taste. Ive used cheap knockoff brands from a closeout store that were just fine, and i've had expensive brands that I wouldnt buy again.

I can't argue with much of anything you said other than the debris bit... I would like to point out though that there is amazing coffee out there though and I've never found it for the prices of store brand or generic branded coffee. The best stuff always costs more; not saying the cheap stuff can't be good but I've never tasted a generic coffee of any kind and wanted to call up my friends and family to tell them about it. Good coffee is, really good coffee, is in a different league and should cost more. As for the debris, what didn't make it into you cup is what you see in the machine, what you don't see in the machine is what made it into your cup. I wouldn't eat off of yesterday's dinner plate without washing it and I wouldn't drink out of a coffee maker that wasn't cleaned out regularly either... I think about this at restaurants and coffee shops too; it's often overlooked.

@@TopOffMyCoffee My son-in-lw has an organic coffee roasting business. He always rinses his coffee makers and cups because the coffee left behind gets rancid and changes the taste of the coffee. He also has to steam clean his roasting equipment at the end of the day for the same reason. His coffee is wonderful..the best I have ever had. He roasts it and mails it the same day to his online customers, It is incredible and is so much better than anything you buy in the store.

What about the reusable K cups that’s what I use and I can buy my own premium coffee and I filled to the top with coffee grounds
@NIZAROLAZ4 жыл бұрын
That's what I use .. I have my own grinder that has fineness setting for different kinds of grinding. Been getting Starbucks Verona Dark Roast beans and grind a small amount at a time to maintain flavor and freshness Those ready Kcups are a waste of money and adds to the plastic landfill as they are not recyclable!
@coffeegrinder63194 жыл бұрын
I take used K cups, preferably something high quality like Peet's, and rinse and sanitize the pod and let it dry. I use "My K Cap" which is a hard piece of plastic that fit snugly on the top. Then I I grind fresh Peet's house blend beans in Hario Mini Slim Pro. I use 10 grams for the 6 oz cup. I use "My K Cap" which is a hard piece of plastic that fit snugly on the top. I'm still tweaking my grind size and currently using 8 click setting. That's just a little bit finer than medium grind. Doe anyone have tips on grind size for the Keurrig? CORRECTION, ITS CALLED MY-CAP . I PURCHASED ON AMAZON

I live in Florida, where tap water doesn’t taste great at all. I switched to using bottled water, and definitely tasted the difference right away. Great tips here, definitely learned new things from it.

Good tips. I have more information though. I did some research on descaling Keurig coffeemakers and of course discovered the home remedy of using vinegar to descale the coffeemaker. However I also found that vinegar is not recommended because the acid in it can attack the rubber seals in the water handling parts of the Keurig and eventually cause leaks. Instead, I use citric acid, which is the primary component of the descaling solution sold by Keurig -- it doesn't attack the rubber seals.

Plastic K-cups shouldn't even be a 'thing' anymore. If the companies want the revenue, come up with a non-reusable K-cup made out of something that can degrade in a landfill in a reasonable time. This, of course, goes for many products made of plastic that are disposable (plastic bottled water, anyone?). My generation was raised with the great convenience of plastics and it never occurred to us there might be a problem with the stuff accumulating in oceans, landfills, etcetera.
@paulross29793 жыл бұрын
@@be5952 there are plenty of reusable k cups made from other then disposable products. And there are also kcups that desolve after use.

Using a larger Keurig machine with a reservoir, there are multiple size settings. The machine automatically disperses water to three sizes in mine, which allows making tea as well as coffee. Regardless, the largest size is well over 6 oz, so the manufacturer has no problem with using more water per serving. The Perfect Cup is totally subjective to the individual.
