I swear the power steering pump has only one thing that matters and that is what type power steering fluid has been used in it if you ever are to replace a used one. Later models use environmental friendly fluid while the older model still use age old red ATF oil. That is the thing that could happened if you swap one of them out with a different, the pump could possibly seize or leak and power steering rack due to containments loosing up. Keep up the good work on keeping the car alive greetings from Sweden.
@mathiaskoenitzer9020
@mathiaskoenitzer9020 Жыл бұрын
Keep on fixing! At some point it will be reliable I promise. I'm glad it sounds like you put special power steering fluid in. I made the mistake on my S60R to try generic power steering fluid, and had to listen to it wine and complain the whole time I had that fluid in it. Fortunately a quick flush with the correct (expensive) fluid and the pump quieted right back down.

I owned one of these, the non-R version... Yeah, probably the most expensive car I've owned and it was not because of the buying price or the selling price. However I did manage to at least drive it a few months before the next thing popped up. Great car when it works, but it's always a matter of when the next thing fails and where it'll leave you stranded, nothing like my 740 and 940 that just needed normal maintenance and soldiered on until I sold it (740, still regret selling that one) or cracked the head of the crappy VW diesel engine (940).

UGH I HATE the power steering on the P2 Volvo's for multiple reasons. Many of them use the awful ZF variable assist system, which was used on many other luxury cars at the time. I've had a few and none of them worked because of the TINY valves on the rack that clog up, and they fail in the "low assist" mode. I fixed my S60's but it took me weeks to figure out. Then my pressure line blew and and it goes up and down around everything and is super hard to get out. And the pumps are expensive...and yada yada. I'm so glad you just needed a pump! Make sure your fluid is supppperrrr clean (and maybe even install a filter) because if the fluid is too dirty it will clog the variable assist system!
@Herrgarret86
@Herrgarret86 Жыл бұрын
The thing is that this is not normal that a car like that has so many problems. Volvo from that era is quality! This car must have been so abused in it's prior life. One thing is important tho! Check the power steering fluid resarvoir because if it's not changed in recall there might be air in the power steering fluid and that kills the pump.

I have a Volvo story to share. I picked up a 2015.5 XC70 T5, sadly the spark plugs exploded often and triggered four replacement engines--eventually Volvo re-purchased the car. I was so sad, that I went out and found a 2016 Volvo XC70 Premier--and that vehicle was involved in an accident. Chubb--our insurance carrier decided to deem the car as a total loss. Sad again. Then this past July, I happened upon a 2016 Volvo XC70 Platinum with 19,600 miles (I paid $30K). The car was not driven for a year (August 2021 through July 2022). I suspect the driver died and there was a delay in returning the car to market. I tell you this long story, because I believe that Volvo ownership is somewhat cultish. Volvos are heavy and don't have the best steering feel. They do however offer you a an opportunity to beat the odds of death by car. For me, that is worth all of the pain and misery we all suffer keeping these Swedish jalopies on the road, I salute your effort to return the 2005 V70R to service. Having a manual transmission is an amazing plus. Once you get all of the mechanicals sorted out, you can work on the paint and interior. The alternative is spending $60K plus on a brand new Volvo. Clearly a better path to restore the gem you found. Good luck!

Easiest way to remove the belt is to pop the plastic cap off the belt tensioner then use the bolt hidden behind the cap then use a wrench to release the tension.

Well done Elliott... just a quick observation, is the accessory belt on backwards in regard to the V's which should be against the power steer pulley and not facing out... may pay to change it if it's had a lot of oil on it too. Man that power steer fluid was disgusting... may have to do my old BMW's after seeing yours... Stu from New Zealand

The difference between a V70R/S60R variable power assistance power steering pump and a normal V70/S60 pump is the 'R' pump is a constant flow whereas the normal one is constant pressure

The acceleration sounds slow if that was a 2-3 gear pull... especially for an R. Maybe check the wastegate actuator arm and see if that needs adjusting? Doesn't sound like you're building up peak boost

I bought mine without power-steering. Replaced the pump (which was bad) and found it was leaking from the rack. After replacing the pump, reservoir, and hoses it seemed like it was caused in the first place by a leaking screw on the rack.

Great content, but how much did you invest the repairs, plus what did it cost? A all in all to date?
