Tosin doesn't even think of it this way, it's literally just a 9/4 pulse. A lot of people like to over complicate rhythms, just try feeling it rather than turning it into a math equation, it'll make you a better musician.

@Lil-lau9611 ай бұрын
No part in the video said Tosin thinks about it like this lol Yes, this part is in 9/4 (the drum cymbal makes it easier to count it and feel it) Nonetheless, this is a nice breakdown (a “math equation” just fun) of the whole time signature in this section. I don’t see the problem in doing this in order to understand what’s happening as a whole, like the accents of the cymbals in these measures. And yes, some musicians likes to over complicate things at the moment of playing, can’t deny that, which is not so practical at the end, but this video helps well to understand more this section. It’s just an analysis lol
@elkira170011 ай бұрын
@@Lil-lau96 is it not 9/8? To me, it didn’t make sense to count 9 in quarter notes but counting 9 to eighth notes made sense. X/4 is slower if that makes sense, idk how to word it lol

@@elkira1700 Oh lol my reply wasn't at you 😅but i like to count it like 9/4 at 155 BPM (It could be 1 or 2 beats higher tho) The cymbals at the end helps me to count it like that, specially during the big ass drum fill almost at the end lol

Good job with this. It’s the same number of beats. For the two groups of seven, I would probably make them 4+3 instead of 3+4 the way they’re written here to show the accents/strong beats. For the people overly criticizing breaking down the rhythm this way, this approach totally makes sense when you hear Tosin talk about how he goes about writing this music. He likes that Meshugga has all of the accents of another time signature moving around a quarter note pulse. What he does is break large sections into different time signatures so when he writes each individual sub-bar, those interesting accents are built-in; just like this.

Drumline folks will recognize the crash pattern from the 4-2-1 triplet grid. The 2s pattern creates this rhythm. Listen for the cymbal pattern and you'll find how it's supposed to work. TRIpuhlet TRIpuhlet, triPUHlet triPUHlet, tripuhLET TRI- (downbeat of next 18-counts, rinse-repeat) If you add the snare in between as the other notes of the grid, then you get both hands. Then you only have to learn the kick part.
