My REAL Day - Airline Pilot, Hawaii

(Filmed In Coordination With Airline Management And The FAA)... When you fly 8 legs a day and only have 5 to 20 minutes between flights, things get busy FAST... So here's what a REAL day looks like in my shoes. Flying as a Part 135 pilot means many of the responsibilities that are shared by multiple crew members are shared by just two pilots. It's a fun, tiring job by the end of the day.

That’s his own, $1000, personal headset. The Captain wears a David&Clark headset. If they were company issued they would both have the same brand headset. A lot healthier this way. You don’t want to be wearing a sweaty, stinky, community headset.😬

Sasha the headset is an investment though. Since it will last a lifetime, and having a good headset is good for the ears, so albeit expensive, it’s still good value for a pilot in the long run

My first job after instructing was flying 208s in Hawaii for your competition at the time. It was a terrible company but was the most fun flying job. I don't think anything will ever compare. Glad I did it. And learned to windsurf while living on Maui. Now I go kiteboard and windsurf there every chance I get.

It is my understanding that the wage and hour requirements of non-exempt employees not covered by collective bargaining agreements, requires they be paid for all time actually worked. Basically, because you are not supervising other people, you are NOT exempt. If you are part of a union, you are screwed; but, if you aren't part of a union, you should be entitled to payment for your non-flight time worked. Check with an attorney if you are uncertain.

Ya and Mokulele rapes FOs on pay. Guy could be making 30-40k as a Commercial Instrument pilot but he took the first job offer he got. Can't blame him, he wants the hours but I wouldn't have been so eager to jump into one of the most expensive liberal states with a job that pays minimum wage. Fuck that.

@dphotos007 6 жыл бұрын
Daytona Sixty-Eight the state he is working in has no bearing. Think he took the job because he is young and had the opportunity. He also is flying with his captain friend and is learning a lot. I think at this point he should look into working for a regional airline on the mainland that fly’s smaller jets. They are looking for new pilots now and the pay for FO is good. Not sure if he has enough hours put he would have to be willing to be based in not so pretty states in the rust belts where winters are cold.
@daytonasixty-eight1354
@daytonasixty-eight1354 6 жыл бұрын
Uhh the state he is working in absolutely has bearing. He lives there part time so the cost of living of that area comes with that. Labor laws to the locality and state apply as well. This applies for any job. You need to put the pipe down buddy and think logically.

It's really good seeing pilots, even though I don't know if I can make it. I'm currently grade 9 aspiring pilot. My family is not that rich and can't afford to put me on flying schools or Aviation on college. It means that I have to do it on my own and just study, take a decent job, save up money, and go to a flying school. Even If I finish getting my CPL with 200 hrs, I know no airline will get me because of the low flying hrs. 1.5-2M PHP is so expensive and that's only for the 200 hrs in getting the CPL :(. I'm so sad. Just sharing my thoughts that I can't get out of my head :( .

They are probably exceptions, as both owners were crooks, cheating investors and employees 'til bankruptcy. After that, I went to the BNSF rail crew school in KS and went to work for CSX railroad back east. Best move I ever made. The hours sucked but it was a good... even fun job. I'm 71 and retired now, but still think occasionally of going back to the rails!

Get your training at a local FBO. Build your hours, get your commercial and get paid banner towing while at the same time prepping for your CFI. If you can take online courses from legit college do so. One that is properly credited. Not all of us can afford to go to Embry Riddle. Good school regardless, especially for engineering, etc. Hell. maybe with your CFI you can apply to Embry Riddle and take courses there, or even at FIT. I wish I knew that when I was young. Only sink the money in your training while you have it avoiding that student debt. You can also get a CDL license if you're into trucking, or a trade and get paid well enough to afford your flying lessons. If programming is in your blood, try learning front end development. That will certainly supplement your flight training. Oh the lack of Sh__ I knew when I was young. It doesn't matter what kind of degree you get. Hell, I heard of a fighter pilot in the Air Force where his major was music theory. Just goes to show. But you want something you can fall back in case the flying bit doesn't work out. A&P is also another trade worth pursuing. Don't go for the 4 year thing. I think A&P can be done as little as 30 months for both, 18 for one. You can complete your 4 year degree on your time and terms. As the saying goes, don't let the school get in the way of your education.................especially your flying. Some of you will take a little longer than others to get there. Just don't rush, but be consistent. Oh, yeah, flight soft ware will save you on repeating lessons on way points, navigation, planning. It's less expensive to learn on a computer than going up with an instructor who teaches you how to dial in a VOR, input GPS, waypoints, etc.

That’s is horrible your airline does not pay you for non flying work. That is kind of upsetting and all the pilots should fight for money they are owed. Once you arrive and clock in at your desk to complete the paper work you SHOULD be paid. How can this airline get away with this. I know this is a stepping stone of a job for you but the airline also has to be fair.
@SwayneMartinPilot
@SwayneMartinPilot 6 жыл бұрын
dphotos Almost every airline in the world has a payment structure like this. Doesn’t matter if you fly for Mokulele or Delta... you only really get paid for the time you fly.
@dphotos007
@dphotos007 6 жыл бұрын
Swayne Martin That payment structure is very wrong and it would take all the pilots acting together to get it changed. No one should not be paid for work done for the company. Are you paid hourly? What about pilots paid on salary?
@jasonmconnors
@jasonmconnors 6 жыл бұрын
Paid by flight hour is pretty standard across the industry. There may be some exceptions for corporate guys. The military is obviously salaried. There’s a reason that if you or a flight gets delayed, the pilots don’t want to open that door.
@dphotos007
@dphotos007 6 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Myers yes I see that now a pilot like this fellow is only making about 11.00-15.00 an hour sitting in the FO position and the CA is usually paid double and the rates get higher the more years you have with the company. It depends a lot on if the plane is military, corporate pilot, cargo, small regional, discount carrier, national carrier and major international carrier plus it depends on the economy. The pay scale can be all over the place even with the same training. It would seem best if you were trained by the military that way you would not have large student loans. I thought pilots have unions and I would think the unions would help the pilots to get paid something for pre flight work.

A lot of work before the flight and then try keeping the shiny side up. Great job! *_Question_*: if you happen to fly differt tail number os the same aircraft, do you notice if they have different quirks/characterisitics? Thanks!

Swayne, very insightful video showing the down and dirty. Appreciate the detailed listing of all the duties you have pull off to do a turnaround. At one time, I was an ATO aboard an aircraft carrier. Imagine deplaning a bunch of pax and then trying to corral them on the flight deck with jets spooling and props spinning all around. It was hard work, but still one of the best jobs I ever had.

True story: 1988, I was travelling through Hawaii on my way to California, wondering what to do with my life. I was fresh out of High School. I met a Swedish freight pilot working out there, and I totally fell in love with the concept of flying. I have now been retired for many years, having to quit at an early age due to MS (Multiple Sclerosis). But I did make it to my "dream job": flying for a major. airline But on the way, I spent over nine years living below the official poverty line while building flight time. I thought I would either NOT make it as a pilot, OR become poor because I did NOT make it. Did not foresee becoming a working poor AS A PILOT. I hope that has changed, people used to volunteer to work for free to get flight time back then. Best of luck! I have probably close to 3000 hours flight time on the C208, the 2nd most I have except for the B737 NG. Nice airplane! Enjoy. Jan.

Lisa car I’m sure you have decent credit you’re a pilot you’re probably responsible. Because you drive so slow miles you can get a very cheap eats like a basic Honda Civic with $1000 down total out-of-pocket including taxes and under 200 a month for a low Mi. lease, i’m a pilot and I manage $100 you get in touch with me and I will take great care of you, Think about it it comes out to less than $50 a week the coolant itself on that car is probably 10 bucks a week.

I loved that airline when it existed . Flew from big island to Oahu every weekend for a couple of years. Most,y on the small jet. I was on a first name basis with gate people and flight crew. Soon as I boarded I was handed a Heineken. Then it was gobbled up by the bigger airlines, mainly Hawaiian airlines. The way of the world. And the rates almost doubled, oooo what a surprise. You are living the dream ,but as a former pilot I know they are handing you crumbs for pay.. That being said, you get to fly and get hours. Your a lucky young man. Wish you the best in the future.

If a pilot is willing to drive a piece of mechanical equipment that is so out of order, dangerous, and just downright garbage, I don't think I want to get into a plane with him. You can get a really nice car (compared to his anyway) for like $200 a month. There's no excuse

Dude, if you need an "airport car" that you want to put $0 in Buying a Volkswagen was the absolute worst choice. I know it's "cute" or w.e. but that's not really the criterion used to select a semi reliable cheap car now is it

Yes I've read considerable on the merits or non merits of becoming an airline pilot & whilst aircraft generally interest me but as for becoming an airline pilot, nah thanks!! Ya can't beat having your very own business & working as you so desire inclusive of sleeping in your very own bed each night instead of some hotel room.!! Irrespective of the type of career you may choose all jobs (including mine) have facets of sheer boredom & there is no such thing as the perfect job & again even mine!! However I absolutely concede that we need pilots & you do an important job & a good job!! I guess each to his own desires!! For the record I chose computers (ugh) but funnily it's not the computers that get up my nose on the odd occasion but the arse hole owners of those same said computers. One can always simply pull the plug outta the wall & the bastard usually turns off but not so with the owner!! Need I say more!!

Why would you take such great care in the airworthiness of your aircraft and the safety of your flying passengers, yet have a complete opposite approach to the mechanical safety of your car and lack of concern for the motoring public? I bet you would NEVER fly an aircraft that’s in the condition of your car. ALL transportation vehicles should be shown the same degree of care and attention, not just those that fly. Safety on the ground is every bit important as safety in the air.
