Being a pilot is a balance of quality of life, quality of job, and quality of pay. If you pull on one, the others shrink. Not every month can work out this well... But I'm so glad I experienced with AMAZING crews. What else do you want to learn about being an airline pilot?

It’s the greatest job in the world. Don’t let anyone ever tell you any different. My career lasted for over 40 years, and my last flight was just as much fun as my first. I’m reading through the comments and I see a lot of people saying, “I always dreamed of being a pilot”. Go for it! It’s not an easy road, but once you’re there you’ll never regret it. You’re truly an inspiration, Lisa - not only to women who dream of being a commercial airline pilot, but to anyone who holds themselves back from new challenges or believes “it’s too late” to become what you always dreamed of being. At age 37 you’ve figured out so much about yourself, embraced new journeys, and pursued entirely different career paths literally from Step 1 - never once giving in to self-doubt or questioning the wisdom of your choice. You went exactly where your heart led you… something all of us should do in our lives. Well done!

I'm 39. Only a few hours from my private checkride. I was just approved for a loan for a 141 school. I tell people I'm still considering my decision, but in my heart I know I'm going to take the leap of faith. I could never live with myself if I allowed fear and security of a miserable, well paying job to get in the way of my dream. I logged my first 15 flight hours 9 years ago. In a matter of a few months I soloed, found a house, quit flying to help pay for it, and was expecting our 3rd child. I thought I would never fly again before retirement. 9 months ago I was getting depressed thinking I would forever be a skilled laborer/underachiever. That's when I decided I was going figure out a way to afford training and wouldn't take no for an answer. Before I knew it, I was securing regular weekend handyman work and had logged another 60 hours into my training. My point to all of this is, don't ever give up on the dream. If you really want it; you can obtain it.

Never go with a 141 school, you will pay 10 times more. Go to your local 91 outfit and find a CFI you like and trust. (Study and be prepared for your lessons and you’ll knock out your ratings.) Although not as shiny as a 141 school, you will pay WAY less and learn the exact same stuff at your local flight school. I personally know many pilots who are still paying off their $100k+ loan for ATP or other 141 schools whose slick salesmanship suck you into their programs.

After my application to the European Flight Academy was put on hold due to the pandemic, I lost pretty much all hope that I could become a pilot in any reasonable timeframe. Hearing Lisa switching careers at 30 makes me incredibly happy and while I still have a long way to go (currently only at ~20 hours since my PPL), this finally gave me the motivation to drive out to the airport again and look around the country in the trusty Cessna of my flight school to build more flight time and reach out to the EFA to see if there are any updates on when they are opening up again. Your videos have always been a big source of motivation for me and I am extremely grateful for that!

Hey Swayne! I've been watching your videos since you were flying in Hawaii. Anyway, Captain Lisa made a career change at 30, I made a career change at 56! I am about to retire as a police officer after 27 years and just landed my first commercial pilot job. They are allowing me to fly part time until I retire in a few months. Your vidoe's inspired me to start taking lessons three years ago, and now I'm a commercial pilot! Keep up the good work!

Swayne I gotta tell you, your videos and stories are so inspirational. Thanks for introducing us to Lisa, her story resonated so much with me. I'm 43 been doing A/C maintenance for the last 22 years at Continental/United and I too am looking to transition like Lisa. Her story is my story!! Thanks

Wonderful awesome video Swayne! That is just so neat how your schedule worked out! So I saw you had a 4 hour layover in KMLI. Not far from my home! I have flown out of Moline several years back on Northwest Airlink. What a great experience that was! I'm sure it would have been nice to have Sam in the Bahamas as well! But flying with a friend for the whole month cycle obviously was great as you expressed. Have an awesome weekend! Mark in Iowa.

Often we think "it's too late for me to do it." She really makes us realize otherwise. Nice motivational video for people constantly thinking about whether they should make the switch

@baemp1re3 жыл бұрын
@@baxtercat5462 I do not. My brother just got hired with ABX as a 757 first officer. I work for USPS maintenance and do a majority of my work in the parking lot that sits right on the approach end of 18C. I see all the Jets taxi and takeoff right next to me all day. Hopefully I'll have the flight hours I need to land a regional job by the end of this year.

@@baemp1re - Wow! My father’s been a captain at ABX for the last 30 years. He’s coming up on retirement in a few years. Really neat to come across someone on the internet who even knows what ABX is. I’m sure they’ll fly together at some point in the future.

@@baxtercat5462 that's awesome! Yeah he just got hired on there. He was a casualty of Express Jet closing there doors. Our dad retired from Delta on 757's. Now I'm late to the party trying to finish out all my ratings to get in the airlines myself lol.

I was going to change careers and was working on my PPL when 9/11 occured. That put the brakes on what was getting ready to become wide open with all the Pilots who came after Vietnam leaving.I stayed and retired as a police officer after 25 years.

I'm 31. I made a decision this year that I'll become a pilot. It was my childhood dream before I was (unfortunately and accidentally) dissuaded from that path. I'm back on it. I don't even know how I'll pay for training. But I'm starting where I can. So glad to see Lisa's size too. She's as tiny as I am. I'm definitely very encouraged.
