I haven’t noticed anything negative happen as a result of using paper towel at the bottom, although I will say most of my plants are in nursery pots inside decorative pots so I don’t need to do this often. Hoping and praying you’re doing much better now. You look a lot better! I’m glad you changed the pots to be the same. Really made a difference. I have a question! I bought an alocasia silver dragon a little over a week ago. When I bought it the soil wasn’t my favorite - lots of peat moss- but she was bone dry. I watered and it’s a 8 days later and the soil is still moist. Would you repot into a more well draining soil? I’m scared of my alocasia getting root rot. 😰 a leaf is also unfurling right now.
@ohtheplacesyoullgrow3 ай бұрын
Alocasia are the type of plant that actually prefer to be in moist soil consistently - all of mine are in self watering setups so the soil is always moist. That said, if you don’t like the substrate, you can swap it out. Alocasias don’t like their roots messed with too much so expect some leaf drop but it’ll be bounce back!

Be very careful with that particular brand of coco coir and coco chips. It needs to be rinsed and buffered before used in mixes - I’ve had personal experience with my roots frying and the plant going downhill for seemingly “no reason” and the only fix it needed was the substrate. @youdontevengrowhere gave me the insight - check her out for more info! ❤

1. I’m happy you’re feeling better! 2. I repotted my birds of paradise (I have both varieties) for the first time after a decade. Oops! That was a mistake 3. You hit a sore point with me by mentioning coco coir. I have used the Plantonix brand for 5 years and only recently learned you have to buffer it! Thanks for obscuring that Plantonix! From there I went down a rabbit hole looking for more information. This is what I learned: Coco coir is full of salts because of the sea side where they are located. They need to be washed and buffered. On a package of their coco chips it said to buffer them as directed on the package, then the package didn’t have directions on how to buffer. Nor is it on their website and they never responded to my email either. (Alternatively, you can buy their coir already buffered, where it clearly says buffered on the box.) Without buffering the coir positively charged calcium and magnesium ions are attracted to the negatively charged salt ions, thus the coir steals all the positively charged calcium and magnesium ions from fertilizer and won’t let the plants have any. (How bad of a problem this is, I don’t know. But I am using this as an excuse for every plant that died.) How to buffer coco coir & chips is not clear. Lots of places stress the importance of buffering, nobody tells you how to do it. There is no consensus on methods when you do find information. I ended up going with from some Australian guy’s video that referenced a scientific study and I found a similar study. To buffer: for every 1.5 kg of re-hydrated coco coir, soak in a solution of 15 L of water and 100 g of calcium nitrate and leave it for 36 hours. So, not exactly a quick and easy process. I also added 5 ml of Cal-Mag fertilizer per kg to add magnesium because I saw that somewhere, too, so why not. You could add epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) in lieu of cal-mag. A study I found said 8 hours was sufficient time to buffer the majority of the coir. I ended up soaking it for a week because procrastination. I’ve done one batch of 6 kg of coco chips so far. Look into it, let me know what you find. I’m just pissed it is not more clearly and prominently stated when it needs to be buffered before you use it and how to. If it’s so dang important tell us!!! Very few coco coir products on Amazon say if it has/has not been buffered. I’m very angered by this whole coco coir conundrum. Cheers!🥂 P.S. The video on buffering was from Hoocho posted in December 2022. He grows hydroponically in Australia.
@ohtheplacesyoullgrow3 ай бұрын
Thank you for this info! In my description I linked PRE-BUFFED version of the coco coir! Now I’m going to go down a rabbit hole of research from what you share 😂
@amyheckathorn71723 ай бұрын
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow You showed the package of coco coir you used, it was not buffered. I’m glad you linked the buffered product. I have no idea of this is a serious problem for house plants. I’m not a chemist, soils scientist, or horticulture specialist, just a plant hobbyist. (I took chemistry my freshman year of college.) I’m mostly frustrated there are many sources telling us it needs buffered, yet no one seems to know what that means.🤷♀️
