Importing plants unlocks a new level of plant shopping 🔓
▷ IN THIS VIDEO ◁
➥ Imported Anthurium Warocqueanum from Ecuagenera via PalmStreet App ($10 Credit +: Free Shipping): bit.ly/plantstorylive
➥ Sphagnum Moss from BWH Plant Co (Code: MICHELLE3): bit.ly/3sNpQip
➥ Probiotics and Yucca Extract from Bios Nutrients (Code: MICHELLE20): bit.ly/3QN5NZc

➥ My Monstera Rug (Code: MICHELLE10): bit.ly/49EuE9h
This is a way to get hard-to-find or more expensive plants for usually much cheaper! However, the steps to caring for imported plants is critical to ensure the successful acclimation of the plants in your home. Patience is key 🔑
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Unbox the plant and using sterilized sheers, cut away any rotted roots.
Step 2: Rehydrate the plant in water for at least an hour (I added probiotics and yucca extract. Some add a plant growth stimulant as well)
Step 3: Wrap the roots in moist sphagnum moss (extra: I sprinkled in root crack as well) and place in a tight cup
Step 4: Keep the plant in high humidity (close to 100%). I used a clear plastic box or you can even put the plant inside a ziplock bag.
Step 5: Be patient and wait. New roots and new growth are all positive signs that your plant is adjusting well.
When importing plants, make sure you have a reputable seller and follow all laws in your country when it comes to receiving live plants. In the US, phytosanitary certificates are required. In my case, the plants were imported to a US-based seller who had all the appropriate documentation and they subsequently shipped the plant to me, so I did not require any permits.
Would you try this?!

OMG, don't ever feel bad about procrastinating, and don't tell anyone this, but I still have my oldest (living) plant, a heart leaf philo in the original 4" pot with half the original soil from 2009! It survived gross neglect until I finally 'learned how to care' in '2022/23', then she exploded with growth. Then in '23 probably didn't water & definitely mites, she lost all but 1 leaf. She's been coming back with lots of new 2ndary growth spurts (so glad I didn't chop off her vines). I washed her long vines and leaves yesterday. The poor thing is so heavy that gravity is pulling her out and over the edge!! Maybe I'll take inspiration from you and repot her today. /// So, I went to my office to do it! - got side tracked by my brand new Alo. African Mask total meltdown, back hurt, got tired & quit! Then saw your vid still on my screen & your note, so there could be no further slacking off! And Yay - I did it, woo-hoo! LOL! Funny my back doesn't hurt anymore :) I did however rip off 1 vine, but have it in water >>> all thanks to your awesome channel and kindness in responding to your viewers. Many thanks to you for your humour and encouragement to everyone.

Making sure cuttings have rooted enough instead of just throwing them in a pot right away is something I didn't know when starting out last year. It made some plants grow very slowly because they took so much longer to root in soil and could not focus on foliage. 3 months ago, I took my first Philodendron Splendid cutting and put it in moss in a pot.. It developed like crazy, while it was rooting poorly in my open moss pole (no plastic back). Also started wrapping nodes when I saw you do it, so thanks for both great tips!

What do you clean your sink with that you're comfortable putting your plant in there in water?
@ohtheplacesyoullgrow
@ohtheplacesyoullgrow 3 ай бұрын
We have a double sink in the primary bathroom, but we actually end up using only one of them so this sink usually just ends up being the plant sink 🤣. I’ve also used my kitchen sink, however, to shampoo plants in the past. As long as the sink is clean (and all the products I use are plant-based, scent free due to having young kids), I’m not worried about having plants in there.

How often do you water your plants in spaghnum? Do you keep them in icu for 3 months because I just got imports and took them out of my "ICU" box after I saw new growth but now I'm wondering if I did something wrong. I also used a mix of coco coir sphagnum and perlite.
@ohtheplacesyoullgrow
@ohtheplacesyoullgrow 3 ай бұрын
Watering will depend on your environment and how quickly the moss dries out. You want the moss to be consistently moist. I am still keeping my Warocq in the ICU box after I repotted because I haven’t acclimated it to the humidity levels outside of the ICU box yet. Since I only replanted, I’m maintaining the higher humidity levels still.

Is it actually cheaper to import? In Canada we pay ridiculous shipping, so i imagine it works out to he the same. Say i see wishlist Anthurium $20, but shipping was $50. Thats $70. 😔

Oh my!!! So the way I did it was the plant was imported to a seller in the US who subsequently shipped it to me. It went through a middle man essentially.

Yea, same middleman process here. Middle man wants $50 to ship to me. Booo but to be fair they are out of province (different State) so i guess that bumps the cost. Oh well 😅

Why can't you just keep the moss and plant everything together?
@ohtheplacesyoullgrow
@ohtheplacesyoullgrow 3 ай бұрын
I could grow it in moss long term, but I personally am not good at moss upkeep. Moss requires consistent moisture and while in nearly 100% humidity, it didn’t need to be watered too frequently, once I acclimate to my regular cabinet, I would need to water it every few days and that’s TOOOOO much for me 🫠

If I may warn you about these pots you have transplanted into, in three months literally every opening will be occupied by a runner root. They are fantastic, you can hardly overwater in them, but they are an incredible pain in the butt when it comes time to transplant. You probably already know why. It took me two hours to get my Alocasia out without destroying too many roots.
@ohtheplacesyoullgrow
@ohtheplacesyoullgrow 3 ай бұрын
Yes they do have a tendency to always grow down to the water! I’m not opposed to root trimming when that happens through 🫠

Losing older leaves plus light new leaves sounds like a nitrogen deficiency.

Could be because while this has been growing roots, I never fertilized it. Now that it’s in soil, it’s being fed 🙌
