While walking my rescue dog Lordy, we stumble upon a vintage Soviet Suitcase filled with potential treasure. The only problem is, we don't have the key. This is what dog life in Kyiv, Ukraine is like in 2024.

@JohnnyFD, please don’t get a choke collar, there are harnesses that can help with the pulling, and a longer leash and belly leading can help too. Dogs can injure themselves in choke collars, I’d be worried if he got skittish during air raids.

He is such a good dog. He's definitely trained. That smile while you were brushing him is so cute. The more hair you get from him the better as its the winter coat shedding and they need a helping hand. If I lived in Ukraine I would definitely adopt this baby. Such a well behaved boy.

Hello Johnny, I have a lot of experience with dogs, I grew up with many, I also had one rescue, and it also thought it was a sled dog, but then I put him into basic training, and taught him to Heel! -Grab the leash taut to your left side and voice the command “Heel” while pulling him back close to your side each time you voice the command “Heel” and do this repeatedly, and continuously until he finally associates the command “Heel” with being right next to your side, it’s repetitive action with voice command and the association with being right next to your left side in most cases teaches the Dog, your constant commands and pulling of Lord to your left side may sound obnoxious to people around you but the repetition like I said in most cases pays off, and if Lord does learn, eventually you will be able to voice the command “Heel” Without the leash and he will go right to your side. Also give him A praise like “good boy” and maybe a Pat and a treat for reinforcement after 5 commands and it’s a lot of work though Johnny! But it’s worth it! 😅

Please don’t use a choke collar or shock collar. Get a harness. That way if he pulls, he’s not chocking himself. The strain of him pulling while in a halter gets distributed so his throat/neck area doesn’t get crushed… My G.Shepherd would sometimes pull so hard, he’d get sick…won’t go into details. A Rottweiler who was given to me, wasn’t leash trained. Worked with him for a long while. His veterinarian said to “walk up his leash” when he started to get out of control. Basically it pinned him to the ground so he couldn’t drag me down the street…He was all muscle & 110 pounds to my 110 but he was a heckuva lot stronger than I was. The other tip she gave me was to hold the looped end of the leash in one hand, wrap the leash about midway around my free hand for more control. Again, not trying to be bossy, just trying to help a lit’l bit. You’ve got a good pupper there. Give him time, love and patience. 💜💞💙

Aw Lordy, he's doing so much better already! 😍 He might be scared of thunder, hence why he started acting up when it started to rain.. (Those dogs are normally afraid of fireworks too - FYI! lol) I have one dog like that too, gets into a total panic during thunder.. So keep that in mind, especially if he's on the balcony! A dog in a panic can even jump through the window - so do not have the windows open... Keep an eye on the weather, so you can be prepared. Good luck, Johnny! And thanks for taking care of Lordy Lord. 🥰

My dog Jax is a Rottweiler and 50kg. There’s no moving him if he doesn’t want to move. Dogs can easily be left for 12 hrs without going to the bathroom. It’s better not to make them do that but they can do it. Lordy looks like a very traumatized dog though. When you were in the store he exhibited very fearful tendencies. Be patient with him. He will mellow hopefully. Routine is what he needs.

Johnny, a head harness helps the dog learn to not pull, because pulling means he ends up turned around. It's also good to have him go down the stairs behind you, which puts you in the position as leader, and the dog behind you when you're going up the stairs as well. Sometimes the dog pauses on the stairs and looks back at you. I think he's communicating. I wonder if the dog may be familiar with a couple of areas noticing the way he seems to almost recognize them. Maybe his old owners lived in that area? So many lives were taken or dusrupted by Russian terrorism.

Johnny the dog father. You’re doing great. I think we have these natural instincts inside us and they kick in. Please get him a HARNESS. It helps to not pull on their necks. He seems to be taking to you nicely. When he looks back at you he’s checking on you and making sure he’s doing what you want him to. He seems to have some border colley perhaps. He’s smart like my Hendrix. Just keep talking to him and communicating with your hands and eyes and voice. They pay attention to all that stuff. Dogs are amazing. I’ve had mine for almost 3 years now she’s changed my life. He’s such a good boy I bet you’ll keep him. Keep doing great Johnny ! You’ll learn along the way. Let him sleep with you at night. Also get on a pee poo schedule.

His story is he was a former DEA dog and his nose wants off on the floor for that reason. Its a spy suitcase discarded to protect the innocent. Hey during the rain I was silently wondering who was going to eat those snacks? Your dog needs a dog harness to keep the pressure off his neck as he likes to pull. My male Aussie was particular and I was very careful to watch how we met other dogs. Brush opposite then reverse and brush it with hair direction. My dogs get brushed at least every two days and sometimes everyday. They enjoy it because we treat them as we go along. Dry food means they need plenty of access to water. He needs to poop at least two a day when they wake up and later in the evening. The rule is how long can you go without peeing? If they don't pee fairly often like every three hours and then at night they can wait for around eight hours because they are sleeping. If they don't get the pee breaks eventually they will end up with kidney problems. Those type of windows require a chain on each side to lower it to restrict how far it opens. They generally have a loop in the middle at the top and you use a pole to open and close it. I have seen these type of windows in many older buildings. Opening the suitcase a dental pick would do or a paperclip might work. You guys have fail B&E 101 and will be require to take the test again. Fun video especially the last. Their might be a movie in there somewhere, wait its already on youtube! 😂👍😎

Millenials!! Hahaha,...the struggle with that suitcase. I had such a suitcase from the first to 7th grade! You just pull it to the sides and it jumps open and push it down and it's closed again. It was sooooo funny. What are you going to do with a dial telephone, like the ones we had in the seventees and eighties? We didn't have Internet, computers or cell phones and the dial phones and later the ones with the push keys were fixed to a long cord and plugged in the wall. We had peace and quiet and some fun times. Great music too which were vinals and small single vinals and tape recorders. It was sooo funny watching you guys trying to open that suitcase. Thanks for the laugh on my birthday. 😂😂😂🇿🇦

Lord is such a sweet dog, Johnny, and you clearly care a lot about his wellbeing, the way you fuss and question what his own needs are, is the first sign of that... then the way you actually speak *with* him, not *at* him, is so respectful. I did watch your previous vid where you went to collect him from the shelter. I wonder if Lord stopped on the stairs that first day because of him caring about *you* ? I get a little breathless sometimes with many, many flights of stairs, as most of us would do, and do you think Lord (having more acute hearing and senses than us humans), heard that in you, and it was actually him making you take a breather and pace yourself! I'd like to think it was that because he instinctively knows you were giving him a proper home life and improving his lifestyle for him - a kind of mutual care/love thing! Win-win, I say! 🤗 I can just imagine you guys sitting out on that balcony together, on tranquil evenings, watching the night sky and the stars on cloudless nights, with the beautiful symbol of Ukraine now with her tryzub on her shield, watching over the river. By the way, my way of not minding the rain, came from my Dad's attitudes towards it. There were two things, one obviously, he would say it's not shrapnel (he lost a leg to shrapnel, hence why)... And the other is quite beautiful to my mind... if you walk slow pace in the rain, fewer raindrops make contact with you, so you allegedly get less wet, but also somehow by changing my mindset to a kinda, ah... it's only water falling from the sky, washing the Earth clean and refreshing nature (and me), then it seems not what most people see it as when they scurry outta the rain. It makes my hair softer, the rain, maybe as no chlorine in it, so I wonder if Lord's fur would soften up more in the rain. Wildlife loves Summer rain. I've watched birds on rooftops, lifting a wing to get the rain on their (wingpits??? bird equivalent of our armpits)), and I found that so amusing as they often do that here. For a brush, I used to use a bristle brush, not synthetic, because allegedly if they come from pig's fur, they have natural oils in them that help to stimulate our own natural oily conditioners. I was never sure about those wire ones, though good they seem to be, the metal for say my past cat's flesh was too harsh. I think though that some have like a plastic end tip on those needle-pin type parts? I guess doggies have tougher skin and may enjoy a good skin rub, like when they scratch themselves. Hair loss must be so itchy, and doggies, if I remember rightly from my childhood days, get what Dad used to call their Summer moulting. Mama used to say wired-haired doggies don't really moult, but don't quote me on that cos I dunno. Anyway, you're doing well, Mr. Dogfather! Lordy is a gorgeous boy, he suits you! You calm - Lord calm 🤗 Oh, and Mama would take a rolled up newspaper to teach our dogs to walk-to-heel. She'd never use it on the dogs, obvs, but slap the side of her own leg with it if they pulled too much, and simultaneously say the "heel" command audibly but not shouting (cos dogs think we're barking if we shout, apparently, so they may learn to bark more)) Belly-rubs to Lord from me.

Your dog exhibited extreme self control when it didn't bite the overly friendly small dog. Your dog was trapped in a small space behind the counter between the woman and the small dog and couldn't put any distance between himself and the small dog. The best way for dogs to greet each other is nose to tail, sniffing each other's butts. Face to face often ends up in a fight. Someone should have kept the small dog away from your dog after your dog showed how uncomfortable he was.

BTW - those glass x-mas ornaments are actually worth $ here in the States. Eastern Europe is known for their excellent blown glass. 💙💛

Great job Johnny....but get him a bed or give him something more than the rug to sleep on! ...and vary his food...Dogs get bored with the same food all the time just like humans and it won't give him all the vitamins he needs.

Much love to you both. I suggest that you do a doggy DNA test for him. That way you can find out what breeds he is, and then know his ‘propensities,’ strengths and difficulties. Every breed has a ‘job’ - and if you learn what he is made up of, you can support and play into those abilities as well as avoid any breed pitfalls. A DNA reveal video would be fun as well! 💙💛

Hey Johnny, do you think that there might be something wrong with the dog? I never hear the dog barking or making a verbal sound like growling or yelping. I don't know, because I'm not a dog expert or a dog psychologist, but the only breed of dogs that I have ever met that did not make any verbal communication sounds was the greyhound breed. Maybe your foster dog is half greyhound. If not, then there might be some PTSD causing the dog to not make any normal dog's communication sounds like barking.

You need a harness asap. You can also try a pull training collar (pulls head down into chest when they try to pull, much better for training than a choke collar. I wonder if he freaks out about pet store bc it smells like lots of other dogs/animals and reminds him of the shelter (if so, then every time you guys go there,, he might think you're taking him back there)

@@JohnnyFD This is exactly what my childhood was like in the Kyivv region. Dogs. Drawing horns on the portrait of Lenin at the factory entrance, theft of corn and apples from government fields.
