This has some important victim advocacy info... As someone with a ton of sexual assault victim advocacy training, it is very important for you to ASK what the victim wants. DO NOT feel sorry for asking Lex what she wanted to do. That IS NOT putting responsibility on her. That was the correct thing to do. Victims have power removed from them, and the absolute worst thing you can do is remove it again and run the very real risk of re-traumatizing them or putting them in danger. Victims are Victims, and (unless they are actually children) they must be treated like adults. Give them time to process, let them know you're there and support how you can, but you cannot in any case make decisions *for* them. This is very important for EVERYBODY to know. For this case, the worst thing was not having an outside HR firm help you all with this. Also letting them see each other was bad, but it was *not a repeated thing.* For being a bunch of internet funny guys and not... shining beacons of reality, you did okay.

Matt's relationships, the two talking about Daniel (which I find insane that people who don't know Daniel would take offense on behalf of), and the "transphobia" (which is already debunked) are totally not up for the internet to know or care about. While I am VERY pleased with this apology and plan to re-subscribe, even if just to see (for now) whether or not they practice what they've preached in these apologies, extrapolating this case to all SA cases (i.e. "types of situations") would be incredibly foolish. Very rarely do we get anywhere NEAR this amount of information on a SA case. The vast, vast majority of them amount to nothing due to failings in the justice system, mental health practices etc. Sometimes (most times actually) we have no other option but to simply choose between believing the victim or the accused. It's logical to choose to the victim in that circumstance, as at least you don't risk aligning yourself with a sexual assaulter. This is not the case here and we are very lucky for that, but we can't use this as a benchmark for how to handle these types of situations as parties not directly involved.

One of the first, if not primary, emotions I felt was anger; not anger directed toward the person who passed, but anger on behalf of my family and friends who had to experience that devastating loss. i’ve had this happen in my circle a while back when i was a little more ignorant about sexual harassment/assault. I couldn’t grasp the severity of the situation because i never had any experience with any victims. I did. the same thing where i told the victim to talk to the abuser which was horrible. After a couple years and going through my own personal stuff, i know now that handling things like this is absolutely terrible especially when it’s both of your friends. It’s always complicated and never pretty but there are still ways to handle it in a very mature and supportive manner. Hopefully matt, ryan and lex recover from this and, we can all grow from this.

One thing about this whole thing that really rubbed me the wrong way was the Daniel stuff. And yes I recognize that out of everything that went down, the Daniel comment was one of the least important. But I noticed a lot of people dogpiling on them for that specific thing and it didn't set right with me. I have lost many loved ones, including my own mother. And while she died to an overdose rather than suicide I know there is no right or wrong way to express the incredibly complicated feelings that come with losing a loved one. Ryan and Daniel were childhood friends, who he unfortunately lost to suicide. And Ryan is fully within his right to say whatever the fuck he wants about Daniel's passing. Same goes for Matt. It is not anyone's place to tell you how to feel or what to say about a loved one you've lost. My mother was a junkie, a cheater, a woman who made poor life decisions. But she was my mother, the saint who raised me and held me close, tucked in her jacket on cold mornings while we waited for the school bus. I feel angry, and sad, and hurt 14 years later. But one of the ways I cope with my trauma is by cracking jokes about her passing. It shaped me into the person I am and being able to make light hearted humor out something so horrible is honestly empowering. I refuse to spend my whole life crying about my dead mom, and I have every right to say whatever I want about her and her passing. Matt claims he didn't call Daniel a coward, and maybe that's true, maybe it isn't. But it's his grief, and he can feel hurt and angry at Daniel and it is no one's place to shame him or Ryan for that.
