Imagine being ridiculed for having a massive hit... would that we were all so lucky. It is a great song, and has caused many more people to give the band a listen that would have never heard of them before, myself included.

The copyright lawsuit had nothing to do with The Hollies. They didn’t write this song. It was Mike Hazlewood and Albert Hammond who sued, and it’s to them the royalties go. Albert's son, Albert Jr. (how original :) ) went to boarding school in Switzerland and met Julian there. They went on to form The Strokes. Rock n' Roll is so posh, darling.

The quality of the songs or "the loyal fans" has nothing to do with being a one-hit wonder, though. It simply means "I believe..." is their only major commercial success, which arguably is the case.

This breaks my heart, picture it, early 2000s as a young man in my early 20s and a huge fan of AC-DC I found myself at a metallica concert in the RDS dublin because the wagnerian style of rock and metal was the only game in town in terms of guitar based rock (and i still love that style too). I had heard a song called growing on me by a British band from lowestoft called the darkness and I liked it, it had that swagger that rock had lost, and then at that concert in the RDS out walks justin hawkins, in a catsuit with a green visor type hat thing. Before I had heard a note I just knew this amount of "observe me" bravado meant this was going to be special, then your brother Dan opened up that black shuck riff, familiar but dirtier and nastier than any dirty deeds, that was a moment of rock n roll history as important to me as my first time seeing angus young. One hit wonders my arse, yourself and the darkness are in my opinion the most important and relevant entity in rock music today. And all joking aside I would just like to say thank you, I'm not being weird or throwing out fake social media praise. Just a genuine thanks for the music,

Don’t worry Justin, you’ll always be a two hit wonder for me, LooooAAAAAHHHHHVE ON THE ROCKS! I kid of course The Darkness are a fantastic band, and “Every Inch of You” is my favourite Darkness song, and “Hot Cakes” was the album that really got me into your band. Your vocals on that song (and that album, well every album) are absolutely knockout and the plunking foot stomping rhythm you’ve got behind it, great stuff! If it’s any consolation I didn’t actually know until around 2018 (I’m 23) that “I Believe in a thing called love” was your biggest song, I’d always thought it was “Love on the Rocks with no ice” but I suppose that was just because my dad played that song all the time. Personally I don’t understand why being considered a “one hit wonder” is a bad thing for a lot of people either, as you said, where’s their one hit? Least you got “one hit” plenty of great bands don’t when they deserve one.

I remember, as Justin himself no doubt does, reading a Kerrang review of Permission To Land that described it as "playing like a Greatest Hits collection". And it does. Non-stop bangers from front to back. I didn't even know I Believe.. was the hit for years; I always thought it was "Growing On Me" as that seemed to be in much more regular rotation on t' telly. I'm sure "Love Is Only a Feeling" must have done pretty solid numbers too.

Question for comments day: Justin, you mentioned, in a previous video, 3 Darkness songs you hate and shouldn't have been released. Two of the songs mentioned were on Hot Cakes, "With A Woman" and "Everybody Have A Good Time". Are you aware these are, by far, the two most streamed songs from Hot Cakes on Spotify? I'm a guitarist and you have no idea how many times I've played 'I Believe in a Thing Called Love' and thought 'GOD I WISH I HAD WRITTEN THIS FCKN RIFF', it's just so cool and so easy to headbang to 🤘. Love is a Only Feeling was quite a big hit here in Finland. I remember visiting in 2004 or so at big radio station here in Finland with school class and we were introduced playing list. Songs were categorized which meant some songs were played more often than others. I remember seeing Love Is Only A Feeling in category A (or A- or so). Somehow the Darkness is quite a forgotten band here by the masses compared your popularity back then.

Our band had a song on a bigger playlist once, and people have called us one-hit wonders for that; some have called us sell-outs and we even got barred from playing a "punk" venue because of that - but the odd thing is that it was not even 100k streams, just a weird reaction from others in the local scene

I believe in a thing called love transcends generations and musical preferences, “the kids” today get it, appreciate it and love it just as it is. I love Creep, but it’s really of it’s time, I associate it to that time personally and feel what i felt then, but it hits really different if you hear it for the first time today. And the term one hit wonder I think is largely used by certain people who don’t realise there’s other charts in other places, and by people who don’t actually “listen” to music. I was reading through a one hit wonder list the other day, and I had multiple albums and knew multiple fantastic releases from the artists, but it was just based on a certain country’s charts. I even disagreed on some of Beato’s one hit lists, though he at least recognises that it s to his taste/charts. Better to have one hit, than none, and in a time when charts were real, unlike todays stacked up nonsense.

Well, Christmas time has been a staple in my household (during Christmas obviously lmao) since I was little thanks to my mum. She always loved the Darkness and now that song is a massive part of my childhood and family history. Surely that’s what musics all about? This nonsense about a one hit wonder is like someone getting slated for being successful. It makes no sense to me.

People who think The Darkness are a One-Hit Wonder band don’t know rock music. They are criminally underrated and have been for over a decade. I’d even go so far as to say they are coming out with their best music in the last few albums. Last of Our Kind, Pinewood Smile, Easter is Cancelled, and Motorheart are all EXCELLENT!

I think it depends on where jn the world you are, there are a bunch of British bands that would be considered 1 hit wonders in my home country of Canada, but actually have very successful careers elsewhere kn the world

It's not about "knowing rock", it's just a fact that The Darkness only had that one hit, that doesn't mean they were necesarily bad.

The Police singing ‘Sue Lawley’ is my favourite misheard lyric. I still belt out the words Sue Lawley when it comes on the radio. It fits perfectly.

I believe in a thing called love always popped up on kerrang when i was a child, i always stopped infront of the telly to watch the video becuase it was bonkers. i rediscovered it last year after trying to describe the music video to my boyfriend, he said i made it up but after a bit of thinking i remembered the tital .i've been in love with it, i love listening to it, singing along to it, i think i sound great but all my boyfriend can say is "well you're loud". it always brightens my spirits, it makes me feel so queer and like i can do anything. you're voice is amazing and your confidence is infectious thank you

I love the video! It reminds me of the amazement watching Barbarella for the first time as a kid. Justin Hawkins - Jane Fonda... tough choice 🙂

Great song and a great video with a fine sense of humor. The guitar solo part of the video stands out the most.

Yes, The Darkness are known for that song but it is weird that people don’t at least take a listen to Permission To Land from which it was released. Easter Is Cancelled is amazing and every bit as good as PTL.

Hey Justin - I just want to say that your song "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" is one of the (if not the) best rock and roll songs of all time. I always sing along (although there is no way I can hit the high notes). I also do my best to play along with the (rhythm) guitar parts. Overall, brilliant!!

For any artist (whoever they are) that has…lets call it a ‘one beloved favorite’ song, that tune is truly cherished. It is a lifeline and a time machine. It is loved forever and therefore lives forever. And brings the same joy felt as the first time it found a home for all time in our ears and more importantly in our hearts. Some artists entire body of work can not equal or touch that one beloved favorite.

The whole of PTL is awesome and they had many hits on that album. Christmas time was also very popular and is a staple song every year.
