Refret a vintage guitar is completely fine! I’m with you on that!
@MikeW-u4z19 күн бұрын
I agree 100% with you on the vintage instruments and if someone finds inspiration in them then the dollars are irrelevant. I’ve been playing 40+ years and have 54 guitars that range from $220 Squier Strat to $10K custom built and if I pick up a guitar and it makes me want to play and inspires me then its a keeper. Refretting a vintage guitar is exactly what needs to be done to extend its playing life, otherwise you will be digging into the fretboard which will cause irreversible damage.

Beautiful intro, Justin. And great video overall!

Enjoy your posts: the music tasteful and expressive, the words insightful. Would you offer your opinion on SS frets, and tall, narrow wire?

Yeah I truly can’t comprehend people complaining about re-frets on vintage guitars. Very strange.

If you can afford a vintage guitar, then get one. It’s your money and you should be able to spend it on whatever you want to buy.
@allstopblue571719 күн бұрын
Exactly. Play what you want and what you can afford. If somebody truly believes their $150 Harley Benton is better then a Gibson then just play it and stop talking crap about those who play a Gibson.

I got to say , that opening acoustic piece you played was indeed excellent, and what a great tone that Gibson has ,

I am inspired by every guitar I have, it’s weird.

Well done. For a gigging, touring musician such as yourself, a re-fretting is not only necessary, but inevitable to maintaining its playability.
@jayformicolamusic133719 күн бұрын
All good points! Refretting when needed is absolutely something that makes them much more playable. I suppose if a guitar is owned by a collector who doesn't play it's up to them if they choose not to make it playable. I don't believe that a good refret takes away from the value at all.

Well said, JM! Players versus collectors. I'm a gigging musician who prioritizes playing with well-made and well-set-up equipment regardless of age and visiting museums (e.g., Songbirds, RRHOF, etc.) to see Holy Grail collectibles.

Aside from rarity and market value, it's all about tone. Aside from the player, it's all about the signal chain. For example, if you want to sound like early Tony Iommi with Black Sabbath, consider using an SG Special with P90's. And if possible, use the same amp he used. And light gauge strings. Even better, use the same recording studio. It's not rocket surgery. 🤗😁😉

Cool stuff, all 100% Those who don't like the idea of a refret maybe don't live near great luthiers like y'all have in Nashville!!
@allstopblue571719 күн бұрын
There’s plenty of luthiers in pretty much every large city that is capable of re fretting vintage guitars. People complaining about re frets have no idea what they’re talking about to begin with

Can a custom shop Gibson come somewhat close to the original?

In looks maybe.

what do you mean reissues feel like plastic? I have a vintage es 125 and i dont find that my 335 reissue feels like plastic in comparison
@stringlocker19 күн бұрын
I don't know what he means but the lacquer is different. They changed the formula for a couple reasons. They softened it so it wouldn't check so quickly and also environmental concerns. The new lacquer is stickier
@jfar334019 күн бұрын
@@stringlocker agreed it's stickier and soft, and my old 125 doesnt have that soft finish and it's checked. But none come off as plastic like for me, and tbh i love both finishes
@stringlocker19 күн бұрын
@@jfar3340 I agree it's authentic lacquer for sure. Personally I like new guitars because I don't know where the old guitars have been. Have to put them through the car wash first
@stringlocker19 күн бұрын
I was around before there was a vintage guitar Market. In the 70s they were just Used Guitars. We all wanted new ones
@stringlocker19 күн бұрын
@@jfar3340 I think when he says plastic he's just repeating stuff he heard. For example the Epiphones. Gibson is the only one still using lacquer I give him credit for that. It's not an easy finish. A lot of extra work

Nice video Justin! Please never sell that 335. It is the perfect guitar! And if you need to sell it, I will need to buy it lol!

So I suppose yall never heard of custom shop guitars? Lol, you know thats where you have 1 builder and builds to your exact specs? Lol, most highly paid musicians have custom built guitars, Lol, geuss what, you dont! Frank marino has a SG thats only a SG in name by the luthier stamping it SG, Lol, completely hand built in a shop in vancouver, Lol, zero ties to gibson, Lol.

Ya’ll use the goofiest analogies to insulate your cognitive bias… we get it. You can’t afford one. I can’t either. Some players can’t tell a difference. To those players, it’s not for them. If you can’t play your way out of a wet paper bag, you won’t be able to tell the difference between a pawn shop shit pile and a fine instrument, and that is a fact. Some vintage instruments are absolutely brilliant… some aren’t…. But people don’t believe specific models and years are great because they suck. Pretty simple math.
