I agree with most of what you say. I remember being very young and learning to play guitar. It was very popular to hear in music stores not to waste a lot of money on a beginner guitar. I guess the logic is that there is no way to know if the person is going to stick with playing long enough to make investment in a decent instrument worthwhile. Want to know a good way to get someone to quit playing guitar, buy them a POS instrument. I HATED playing my first guitar. It was SO PAINFUL. I just kept hearing "Well you have to develop your callusses" I guess the blisters got in the way of the calluses. I had to stick with my lessons though, because my parents were disciplinarians and were determined that learning music should be part of my education. I did end up learning the fundamentals of guitar and reading music, but I soon as I was old enough that my parents allowed me a choice, I stopped. When I got into junior high and high school, I picked it back up because being in a band was cool. I still got a POS electric guitar, which was a source of embarassment, because I knew some really good guitar players that were playing in bands around the city and holding jam sessions. I was still a beginner, but I needed a Big Muff and a Vox Wah and a Bad Stone , because that is what guys were playing. Not having the right stuff and cool stuff DID hold me back some. I did stick with it, but Ididn't play in places where guys were playing pre-CBS Strats and Fender Twins because I had a Harmony guitar and an Epiphone amp, and it was just humiliating. I say all this to say buy the best gear you can get while learning, don't be lmited by your equipment, go out and play without reservation. Learn what good gear and good sound is all about as soon as possible. When people tell you anything else they are just passing on old, bad advice or working through their egos.

Buy what you like…if u like something you’re going to play it…you’re gonna practice and you’re gonna learn your gear.

the players who say don't buy expensive gear unless you're a great guitar player usually are not great guitar players.

No you don’t have to spend £5k.. but My advice to anyone starting playing guitar is to get the best equipment they can afford. I remember starting with a cheap guitar and a cheap amp. D’ya know what.. if it wasn’t for me spending £700 on a guitar and £700 odd on an amp, a couple of pedals etc.. I would have probably got bored and given up. Ok, £1400+ isn’t exactly a fortune when it comes to music equipment, but it was the sound that kept me coming back to it. The sound of my shitty £100 guitar and £100 amp was just awful. So frustrating. I was so happy when i bought my gibson studio and jcm 900 combo. That was 1997, i had been playing guitar for about a year, 6 months through that god awful amp.

I play guitar and have playing in bands since I was 16 . I'm 62 and I do not earn my living playing music but I do play luve in bands about 2 time per week and have for years . I have some great guitars that are expensive. I have some Squier Strats that I have been modded heavily . They all are great . I have played live with them with good results . You are right learn how to play take lessons , watch videos and most of all .....love your time spent playing guitar. I'm my view its a gift from God ! Cheers yall!

Great video! When I first started out, I'd spend around 30min "practicing" and 2hrs learning about gear. What a waste of time haha. Definitely worth investing more into practicing, and just accumulating and learning about gear over time, as I have learned from experience. I've also learned that when starting out, no guitarists have a concept of tone, so buying all kinds of gear is probably not the best idea yet...I wasted enough money myself doing so when I first started.

A warning to late I'm afraid. The guys, that I know, who buy the Ultras and the Historics, the top of the line instruments, are the worst players I've had to deal with.

Don’t tell people how to spend their money, play the best guitar you can afford, most signed working guitarist get their shit givin to them for free.

Want to get good fast?, learn all the open chords and power chords inside out, and then get involved with a band and play live. Getting through four minutes, no stopping, no excuses. You’ll get good fast. And if you are playing with another good player, even faster.

I’ll add my two cents to this. I’ve heard great players (first chair concertmaster of the PSO, for example) pick up a student’s instrument and make it shine. Would they sound better on a better instrument? Sure but the great players make any instrument sound pretty damn good. Interpretation is the biggest impression the common ear latches onto. Just watch the videos of EVH in an airport playing a stock Strat or VH playing a crap student’s practice piano on his 1986 return to Russia. Now, as you progress, you need a great instrument so you can extract nuances from it that a poor quality instrument can’t phonate. As you can tell, I love this stuff. Anyway, nice video Justin!

Better guitar/amp will most likely be more inspiring to play...which means more play, practice, joy.... My son got his first real guitar...LP Studio also at 14...it transformed his interest/practice....became a local prodigy.... head turner at guitar shops as a kid....winning talent competitions...playing with adult/pro musicians at 17. He turns 30 next week...still has/plays that Studio.... a keeper for life for him.

Maybe so but there are some really great cheap guitars that feels great to play. If it's setup right that is. At the same time an expensive guitar can have a bad setup and feel less great to play.
@lazvt84693 күн бұрын
@Thomas-vs8ff Absolutely! In 2009, there weren't the wonderful Asian options we have now..... Set up and pups is 95% of the guitar playing experience. My PRS SE with JB's is every bit as nice to play/hear as my Gibson LP Traditional.... Good point! No need to break bank to get a GREAT guitar. I own CustomShop and HarleyBentons...love them all after a set up (as needed to taste) and with boutique pups thru a Hamstead Artist.

The berhinger vintage delay is an exact replica of the old boss analogy delay. It’s $20. Sounds exactly the same. If you’re just a bedroom player it’s great. Just a cheap housing.
