My Restoration Plan for the Chateau (Full Tour)

Here is the video that many of you have been asking for: the tour of the main castle before its restoration.
In this episode, I share the challenges I have to confront in the restoration of this partly classified historical monument. From the exterior architecture to the interior structures and decoration, I reveal my plans for the future, aiming to restore the château de Dampierre to its former glory, with the hope of one day calling it home :)

It is weird that conservationists would suggest, even more so in 2023, that you should only use single pane glass for a house with these huge windows. There is double-isolation glass available with only 8mm thickness, where the thinner of the two sheets of glass can be made to exactly replicate old glass, which makes it indistinguishable from even original glass.

I love your videos. I think you should stick to your guns and restore the windows as they are now. They are beautiful. It is a restoration of what is, instead of a change to what MAY have been. Your windows are 100+ years old and restoring them is valuable, too. It shows how architecture can be updated over time and allowed the building itself to be preserved with care and beauty over time. I am sure those windows were done by artisans and were expensive and in keeping with the stature of the building.

In France ( and also in England) the French Heritage Society works with the owners of listed buildings, to ensure that the restoration is done under certain guidance to preserve the historical buildings for future generations. They authorize what can be change to make the buildings up to date and live in them, but there are rules about what part of the structure can not be change and must be restored to be faithful to the age and style of the original building.

With the green panes placed sporadically..I think that with a historical architect design it would look cohesive & not out of place or time❤ Could also use the nice arched windows (that I like as well as the green) Maybe have the other colors he mentioned made in the historical way to add in?

I can see why you chose this Chateau-lots of potential, a manageable size, the additional structures on the property and the potential for splendid gardens and water features. Nonetheless, a massive undertaking! I like the confidence you exude in discussing the plans and process for restoring the chateau-you have clearly done your research and will no doubt assemble a team of expert advisors, carpenters and skilled craftspeople ensuring the work is done professionally while meeting the historical requirements. Stephanie Jarvis visited on her 'Travels with my friend' vlog, a restored hotel in Portugal and to get around putting in bathrooms without compromising the structure they made mirror clad cubes/pods lined in marble in the centre of the room. I am not suggesting the same thing but maybe a variation on that. It's worth watching their vlog episode as the hotel was amazing and I am sure that it fits your aethestic.

You can't go wrong with Mansart. The perfect size chateau. Pity about the window panes. On Beacon Hill several houses had window panes turn purple and now they are some of the most desired homes. In fact, I think they are now protected. Thanks for including us.

Anthony! Thank you so much for me in Canada as I prepare my house for Christmas decorating. Your tour is so well thought out and informative and we all are stunned by even the EXISTING state of the chateau. Your plans for the future are clearly well informed and I can see that you have a sense of the step by step renovation to the original or as closely as is possible. But as a member of the bourgeoisie as you pass from room to room, describing your future plans, all I can hear is the cha-ching of the cash register. I appreciate your desire to return it all to the original materials and plans. I also appreciate your command of the English language (I taught high school English for 35 years, occasionally with students learning English as a second language, and I really felt their angst as, although I adore the English language … who knew? … I can understand how difficult t it is because most of it is the exception to the rule as our language has been enhanced by so many others. Had I been those poor students I would have been ripping out my hair. I digress). You have given a fully informed tour of your gorgeous chateau in English having to use architectural and decorative terms. Favourite moments during your tour: “suggested” by the historical society … but “imposed”. Hesitant about dead animal paintings in the dining room despite eating them at the same time. Floating floor. Not only the name but DOING IT at the same time. Authentic panelling @a million. Possibly Plan B. Down the long corridor, an incredible view of the toilet. Not wanting plastic fruits in the kitchen but desiring authentic fixtures. The staircase is stunning. Your plans for the wall treatment is wonderful but, again, cha-Ching. Keeping the original beams in the attic and making it a children’s play room or leisure room for guests with its original charm is perfect. Could the green window glass be used for a separate build orangerie or conservatory or grow room (the proper name escapes me! Gah!) so you can use the materials? There would be more than enough to do so. Somewhere in the grounds. So many worries on the heritage front that will cost you a bijillion dollars but the final result will be worth it and something you can pass down to your children. Oh and Isolation materials are actually insulation materials. Not trying to be rude! Overall, what a wonderful presentation on your part. Your passion for the whole project is inspiring and I, as all of your viewers, can’t wait for your next instalment. We will be fascinated by the progress, bit by bit, as you move through the chateau!

Love your plans for the château. The thinness of the chateau reminds me of Château de Courson a bit. We get to see Courson in the "Bring on the Night" documentary with Sting. There is a more ornamentation outside at Courson, but it has those great big windows on both sides of the slender rooms that just brings in amazing light and views. Can really see that in the documentary when they are practicing in the grand salon. Is it possible to cut out that panel where the kids heights are and save it for them and replace it? If you don't like 13, you could always keep that one open room on the 2nd as a salon or lounge for that floor. You could build a small column or tower roost for the bats somewhere else on the grounds. I see pigeon roosts at chateaus all the time, why not a bat roost. Doesn't have to be big either. Just a warm space for them on a column would work and that can even be 'hidden' by landscaping if needed. Too bad on the tiles from the kitchen, I was thinking if there were extra you could sell individual ones as mementoes.

Just something to think about for the dining room. I would put a painting over the fireplace, and a mirror over the console, that will reflect the painting and the fire. It will add to the warmth of the space.

I’m starting to think you are a hero, all the constraints of your renovation with the historic elements is astounding. The chateau is thanking you and so will future generations, as well as all your viewers. What a beautiful building, thank you for sharing your house and vision for it.

Regarding repairing the stone that’s been covered in the staircase hall, the lads on the channel Les Jeromes figured out a way to repair their limestone blocks by making a glue with crushed matching coloured limestone to patch the damaged area and it looked the same. Might be worth considering for your walls. Regarding insulation in the top floor, you may possibly lose heat thru the roof without putting something in. I’ve seen a few restorations using the plaster board inserts between the beams and they look fabulous without taking away from the look of the woodwork, in fact enhancing that look. Something to think abt. Photos of all the inscriptions and graffiti could be added to the collection and the previous family’s descendants might appreciate the growing chart image.

The chateau is simply magnificent! You have found a jewel. It is big enough to be GRAND but small enough to be warm and inviting!!! Bravo 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Mirrors reflect the light, consider two mirrors across from each other in the dining room. It is a bit dark and will reflect the light coming off the chandelier you chose, and the candles on the table. The light It will just bounce back and forth and be lovely. That is what I love about having mirrors across from each other in room that could use a bit more light. Just a suggestion.

I truly respect your attention to detail to restore with respect to the way the castle was before, but with a view to make it home and comfortable. So may chateau restorations I watch are slaves to what was but using gold paint (!!) to create faux authenticity! As well, rooms are usually decorated with uncomfortable, Victorian style furniture in red faux velvet upholstery. I love that you area creating a home that can be lived in!

Have you read the 'Colourful Past' by Edward Bulmer ? A lovely book that shows how actually living in such a house affects how you organise and furnish it which makes a huge difference from many of those 'museum' type homes. Edward is a lovely man who has restored his home so beautifully and created a natural paint company as he did it !

Absolutely wonderful tour. Could you just revisit the kitchen window conundrum another time please? You made a note about it but I don’t believe we saw it? This is the best renovation on KZbin imo.
