My Review of the Celebrity Equinox - NOT What I Expected - Cabin, Entertainment, Ports, Food, etc

Celebrity Cruises belongs to the same family as Royal Caribbean and, honestly, the experience onboard the two cruise lines are very similar. I would say the biggest difference would be that there are no waterslides or go-karts on Celebrity, which means there are hardly any kids. While the food and service were great, our cabin was dirty and felt cramped, which left me hesitant to book a cruise on this generation of Celebrity ship again in the future. The older Solstice class ships are now the step-child of the company. Their new Edge class ships get all the attention and correct staffing. I've been on more than 50 Celebrity cruises so I think I have a pretty good insight into what's going on. One word, "Down." It is slowly becoming a shell of what it once was. Dropping tips from the all-inclusive booking, raising the add-on cost to premium drinks if you are on the drink package...Azamara and Oceania will be the winners when people become fed up with the reduction. The show "Topper" is so bad, sometimes the cruise director tells the story before the show.

I was totally surprised to read that the ship was built in 2009. The vibe I got onboard made it feel much older!

I sailed Millennium and Summit in 2021, just after the restart and it was amazing. Quarter-filled ships made it like a private yacht and the crew were ecstatic to have passengers again. In 2022, we sailed Eclipse in Alaska and had a similar cabin. Ours was at least clean if not a bit dated. Anyway, I could see a gradual decline in service, food, etc from 2021 to 2022. I guess it’s only gotten worse as they feel emboldened with sold out sailings.

Ben and David found underwear in their cabin. So they marched down to customer service, demanded a full cleaning even to changing the bedding. They too didn't want to get their steward in trouble, but what had to be done had to be done. There is no way to pay the money we pay and not have a clean room.

Hi Morgan, I would have gone back to reception and ask them to clean up the room or switch you to another. For the price, one expects a room in great condition.

We sailed on the equinox last year in May, on a 10 day Caribbean cruise. I thought they entire ship was very very clean. I’m very sorry that you had a bad experience. I agree about the show, Topper, while the dancers were good the storyline was stupid. In November, we are doing a 10 day ultimate Southern Caribbean on the Celebrity eclipse. I’m looking forward to the same amazing relaxing vacation. Next year, we may try one of the newest ships, but I just do not care for those mega ships. Will probably just step up to the edge class. So I’ll be watching for some videos on those ships… I enjoy your channel and look forward to seeing more from you. Cruise on…

For many years Celebrity was my go-to cruise line, but lately I’ve found Princess offers a much better experience and better value. Morgan, I wish you’d give Princess a try and let us know what you think.

My Mom and I sailed on the sister ship, the Eclipse, in November and had a great time. The room was in great condition and we really enjoyed all of the food and entertainment. They did have the same show, Topper. I agree that it was weird and we didn't get the story at all. But the performers were excellent so we enjoyed it anyway. I hate to see that your experience was disappointing. Celebrity definitely needs to do much better. We're going on Summit in February and Edge in June. Can't wait to compare them. Thanks for all your great info and entertaining videos. 😊

Oh no! 🤦🏻‍♀️. I hope we are not disappointed. We are going for my Birthday in a few weeks. Very informative. We are Diamond Plus with Royal, and have only done one other Celebrity cruise. That was Soltice and we went to Alaska. We were overly impressed. That’s why we booked Equinox 🙏

As always, thanks for your honest review. I would off request an immediate cabin change with a free upgrade, not nice to pay for a cabin that is not clean,!ufffff. I think Celebrity needs more employees. 🇵🇷

We were just on a couple weeks ago and the stage was fully functional. Agree with the assessment of shows though. Much prefer Life versus the other two. Stinks that you had the cleanliness issues as our cabin was spotless when we walked in.

I agree with the commenters who said you should have reported the room to Customer Service. I would have, and I have cruised with Celebrity multiple times. When I started cruising I picked up a book that described the 'personalities' of the various lines. I have also watched KZbin reviews by other cruisers. I am not interested in floating amusement parks, and I personally think the newer ships are just getting too big. My go-to lines are Celebrity and Holland America. Usually smaller ships (I haven't tried the Apex class and not sure I want to after seeing a couple of reviews.) Also, no small children. I told my niece that if she decides to try cruising with her kids to look at NCL and RC, which I think would be a good fit for her family.

We've been on the Equinox twice. Both times it was evident that this ship needs a major refresh. I mean MAJOR. There is plenty of rust showing thru the paint on the balcony. The railings are very worn (bare wood). Interior curtains were thread bare in the folds. Furniture worn. On one cruise, a metal extension that kept the balcony glass partition in place fell off leaving the glass partition swinging back in forth in the wind. I called for maintenance. They sent the room steward. He just reinstalled it. The next day it fell off again. I reinstalled it and secured it with some packing tape I had in my carry on. Will not cruise on this ship again.

My first cruise was on the Celebrity Solstice. The room was good, the entertainment was great, and the food blew me away. I don’t think I’d cruise on that class of ship again (and your video is reinforcing my opinion), because I’d rather try out the Edge class ships. Nice to hear the food at the buffet is still good. No other buffet has lived up to that first time for me…😂

Off topic question - I've been told that in Germany, the locals will not speak English to Americans if the Americans won't speak any German. Just curious if this is your experience as you live there.

That is absolutely not true, however, I think in many areas of the world Americans are viewed as somewhat arrogant travellers who don't make any effort to learn a foreign language because they just assume that everyone speaks English for them. I feel like in any country where one does not speak the language, travellers should at least try to learn how to say, "I'm sorry, I don't understand." before they just start rambling off in English. Know what I mean?

Hallo! Loved your insight into the Celebrity cruise. I am one week home from my first cruise and can't wait to plan the next. We had two different 'Jukebox Musical' shows, and the productions and cast were both top notch! Do you find you view the shows from a different perspective having worked in theatre? Also, I'm really looking forward to videos with your sister!

You didn’t mention the fact that the showers don’t have a shower wand. (Except Aqua Class). Even channel ferries have them. You can’t clean yourself properly. Especially in the tropics. This is a deal breaker for me. I always request one before cruising on this class ship 😊

I really like that there are enough cruise lines that there really is one (or more) for everyone. I'm trying NCL next but after that, I may have to give Celebrity a try. I don't dislike kids (I really like them, actually), but I sure don't like everyone's parenting style. Kids will do kid things and it's up to their parents (or guardians) to rein them in when necessary. So many just don't.

Did you contact housekeeping about your cabin. They can’t fix it if you don’t let them know. I have been on the Equinox several times and never had any problems with asking housekeeping to take care of things in my cabin.

The show with the hat I've seen twice on Equinox. I didn't realize it was a poet. A lot of Celebrity shows I don't get. I just love the singing and dancing.I don't always follow the words in songs so I miss things sometimes. i wish Celebrity would stick to just doing a nice show, the production cast works so hard. The stage was working the last time I took Equinox, but that was a year ago. I still wish you would have gone to customer service for the room, that room was unacceptable. I find most cruises are make or break by the cruise and activity director. Recently I was on a Celebrity cruise where they were a husband and wife for both. It is the only cruise I didn't write a review. The husband was awful..but his wife was fantastic. He should never have been given the position, sad the guy was not very good at his job. I pretty much only cruise Celebrity. If they don't change that solo extra cost, I may have to change though. All my 11 cruises were booked before they added the solo extra fee.

The state of that cabin made me gag. Wear and tear is one thing...but stuff that's dripped down the door frame and long, black hair?!! Uh-uh. Next time (I hope it doesn't happen, but just in case), please let guest services know and...if that seems too confrontational, speak to your cabin steward and let him/her know that they must have gotten interrupted before they could finish your cabin and can they do it now please. They are generally wonderful at getting cabins ready for new guests...so something must have happened to keep them from properly turning yours.

Are those cozumel prices in USA dollars?? Like $150 for a drink? We were in cozumel and i remembered i was shocked how expensive it was....im beginning to think they must have a mexican dollar?? Please tell me $150 mexican is actually €3??? (I know mexico uses the "Peso" but i didnt know that they use the dollar sign for peso...wow that makes alot of sense now and why we were so confused and didnt buy any alcohol in cozumel and had a very boring time😅😅😅). Even more we thought "wow americans must be super rich" to pay $150 for a drink in Mexico and my Irish brain didnt understand

My wife and I took a cruise on Equinox out of Barcelona and ending in Rome (July 11-20). We had a great time and enjoyed the ship. The room was well attended to and very clean. Sorry yours was like that.

I’ll be on the fall transatlantic of Equinox! The ship is headed to dry dock this summer and hopefully will get a needed facelift.

If you are on traditional dining, the restaurant opens at specific times 6/8:30 .. hence the reason for the line up …If you wait 10minutes after, you walk right in! This is different if you are anytime dining and have a set reservation time. You sometimes have to wait a few minutes, but usually walk right in.

You didn’t mention the cold drinks and face cloths when you come back to the ship, or the totes and towels you’re allowed to take off the ship for excursions….are these things not offered anymore?

Walking around in pajamas is Never okay. It is laziness and should have been shut down automatically. Many private shops and restaurants now have signs saying No pajamas. Hate this lady trend.

We went on the Equinox last fall and enjoyed most everything especially the food. Booked another cruise on that ship for December 2024. Living in Florida help’s because of the ports we have easy access to.

I was under the impression that Celebrity now lets you access your cabin early, whether or not it’s fully prepped, in order to allow you to dump your stuff and get out and enjoy the ship. If that’s not the case, I think you should have talked to the cabin steward or, if you couldn’t find them, ask for your room to be cleaned at customer relations.

That was our experience just the week before Morgan's visit. We got to drop our stuff off as soon as we boarded.
