My Ronin S Setup with Handles and a Monitor

I recently modded our Ronin S Setup with handles and a monitor and I’ve been loving it so far. Here’s what you need to make it happen:

I have a Ronin-S too, and I guess we agree : handling 1 kg of gear on top of a sleeve is so inconvenient ! That's something that I'd have heard in reviews before buying. I'll add this kind of handles very shortly. Thanks for this setup tips.

I just got in the official DJI handles for the Ronin S, haven't had a chance to use it yet. It seems great though, easy to swap to underslung mode and gives a really wide or tight grip if needed.

hey i gave a question ,maybe you know that, i have ronin s, ninja v and small rig same like your setup, if i put the ninja v and ronin cabel on a camera togather, monitor is not working, only one cable supported in a one time, any suggestion ?

White In Revery did a similar video with a similar set up, and to fix the "clearance" issue with the monitor hitting the back of the gimbal is solved by using this extender: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KDAGW2M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 with these little double sided thingies: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KQXJ66A/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I used it on my rig and it extends it past the gimbal arm so it doesn't bump into the monitor at all.

I watched your video before buying the Small rig handles and neck adapter. You were the second video I watched to make sure this package would work. Unfortunately what you, as well as the other video left out was the fact that the tolerance between the Nato lock screw and the Ronin's Pan arm are not compatible. Yes you can use it for straight forward work, but you can't do any Rolls or anything that might require one to turn the gimbal more than 35 degrees from dead center. I guess this is why you never actually turn it on and demonstrated any more than just holding it. Now I have to send this stuff back. It would help to disclose the bad and the good. I guess when your paid to present something, the good is all you talk about, even though this will not work for many of us. Thanks, but no thanks.

How can you use both outputs at the same time? My GH5 only supports one output. Hdmi or usb-c. Display of the camera is directly dark when I connect a hdmi cable and focuswheel at the same time.

I ended up putting peak design strap quick releases on the front of the bracket where you have the screen mounted to take some weight off my arms, then I have the 7" SmallHD off to the left side on a SmallRig Magic Arm to keep it really adjustable. I just wish it was less work to put it back on the camera then when I'm not using the Ronin.. I really like the screen location on your setup, just not sure where I would connect the strap in... Hmmm... Lots to think about! Thanks for the run down Scott!

This is literally the same exact setup I have haha!! I freakin love it! I also have my second A7iii in a cage and able to pop off one of the handles and slap it on the cage for more stable hand held footage

I have one question. The Smallrig 2221 base plate which you put around the ronin always slide up and that already in 5 minutes. how did you fix this? because I tighten the screws really hard and that doesn't help. I don't see anyone with this problem and I think that's weird. I'm afraid if I use the ronin longer, it will come off completely

I hope this reaches you, I have an s5 and the ronin s with follow focus. The focus wheel doesn’t seem to work and when doing some research I found people with Panasonic were having similar issues. Did you do anything special to get the focus to work?

I have the same set up but I find the 'SmallRig Rod Clamp Ring Extension Mounting Ring' always slides up and the handles start coming in contact with the gimbal. Any tips on how to avoid this?

sorry for being so late, but you could try mini tension belts. Ordered some and will try them tomorrow. I have the same problem as you. Turning the Gimbal upside down fixed it temporary.

Hi Scott, before looking at your video, I've been loking at this one, that shows a big issue in pairing the gh5 with the Ronin S kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmPEZmx3d99nsMU it is said that if you link the ronin with its cable to the gh5 to control it (focus gear, and start/stop e.g.) then if you also connect the gh5 to an external monitor via hdmi, the the screen of the gh5 turns black and you can't control it anymore. Hi, great video! How do you get the internal GH5 LCD screen to work when you connect an external monitor via HDMI and USB-C to the Ronin-S? When I do that on my setup, the internal LCD on my GH5 goes black. There are many of us with the same problem.

Do you ever use the GH5s on the ronin-s? I just recently got a GH5s specifically to use on the ronin-s and get a lot of little micro jitters when walking...Ive always used the GH5 with in body and lens stabilization along with the gimbal which was a crazy smooth combination. I guess i got spoiled by 3 levels of stabilization. Any tips?

I'd turn it off as the IBIS would try to combat the stabilization and lead to very jagged moving footage.

My GH5 screen shuts off when the usb-c and hdmi are both plugged in. Have you ever had that issue? I read that it was a known issue in the past, maybe they've solved it and I missed the update.

Yeah, the GH5 can't do both a USB-C and HDMI output, sometimes it also freezes the camera and you'll have to remove the battery to reboot the camera.

Similar set up for the crane 2. I use the wider dual handles, monitor with a rod clamp, right side handle is a custom handle for the crane 2 wireless remote the remote basically becomes the handle. With the remote I can change modes and change camera settings/pull focus. And added the monopod and locked out the joint for better stability.

I generally don't care for dual handle setups on single-handed gimbals (using the dual handle grip on a Crane V2 and attaching a 7" monitor to those arms left a bad taste in my mouth lol) but I really like this setup. I think I'd still prefer my Ronin-M, but this looks like a true run & gun setup. Well done!

Dude, I think I need to do this. I have found myself having moments of wobbling side to side as it's easy for the weight up top on the gimbal to make your wrists roll. Did you checkout any of the suspension style handle grips (helps to control up and down bounce) at all? Cheers man 😀🕺🏽🎥🏖🇦🇺

No but the up-and-down bounces definitely something I don’t like about gimbals. It’s all just about getting better with the walking motion the best way possible
