My Scariest Flight - Bomb Threat Onboard IL-86

After flying over 2,000 flights and 3 million miles, I am revealing my worst flight experience and scariest flight ever. It was onboard a Siberia Airlines IL-86 from Novosibirsk to Beijing in 2004.
Ilyushin-86 is the first wide body airplane from the Soviet Union and it was the second four engine wide body airplane built in the world, preceded by the Boeing 747. The IL-86 is powered by 4 Kuznetsov NK-86 engines, these engines are underpowered and limit the range of IL-86 with full payload. The IL-86 has unique pull down stairs, which eliminates the need for airport infrastructure to board the plane. There are two decks, passengers board and store their luggage on lower deck before proceeding to their seats on the upper deck. There are no overhead bins in the centre, which gives the cabin a more spacious feel.
There was a potential bomb threat on my IL-86 flight in September 2004 in Russia. During the boarding, 2 suspicious men went to the bathroom and then requested to leave the airplane after boarding. Russia was in a state of high alert during that period as the flight took place just after the Beslan School siege, in which 300 lost their lives and over 700 more were injured.
Security forces came onboard with sniffer dogs to search the plane and passengers were sent back to terminal for additional security and interviews. After 3 hours we were cleared for take-off on the same plane, without the 2 suspicious men onboard. The IL-86 flew below a low weather pressure system over Siberia and shook violently all the way during the 4 hour flight to Beijing. This was probably the only time I wanted to leave a plane early.

I have experienced bomb blast in Belgium on 23 March, 2016. I had landed in Brussels airport and we came out of the plane and was standing near the conveyor belt waiting for our luggage in the morning. Suddenly a big boom happened, the sound was like a blast of a big cylinder, it was a huge sound. We were in first floor and the blast took place in fourth floor. We were told for immediate evacuation from the airport. The airport was sealed and army took control of it. Later came to know that 38 people died from that terrorist attack. That was a horrible incident.

cool video Sam. I was on a bomb scare flight, but it was already in the air. December 1969, on a Qantas B707. We departed Perth for Singapore, and about an hour after take off things started to happen. The plane did a hard turn to reverse direction and descended quite quickly, presumably to avoid explosive decompression if something went off, and then started dumping fuel. Direct approach back into Perth and off the runway into a taxiway away from the terminal. No slides, but they brought up stairs and got us off pretty quick. I noticed guys were looking over the plane even as we were disembarking. We were bussed back to the terminal where we waited for about 2 hours then reboarded and went to Singapore. I found out later a bomb threat had been received by phone against an important person up in first. I guess it was less distressing than having threatening guys in the cabin as in your experience, but it was pretty weird given no one told us anything through the whole thing.

A ferry flight out of SVO to LED killed the whole crew save one or two cabin attendants. officially blamed on a stuck trimmer key. My guess was that the pilots thought the empty plane may do a steeper-than-usual-boring climb and overplayed it.

I regularly fly S7 Airlines (modern Siberia 😀😆). Now it's a really fantastic and comfortable airline because of their new A320NEO and A321NEO that already are over 35% of their fleet. Low thrust to weight, inefficient wing and low power engines gives the IL-86 a very long takeoff roll. I would not fly on that aircraft for all the tea in China..

Reminds me of my flight from Medina back to Kuala Lumpur from my pilgrimage in September 2017.... On board Saudia B787-9 ..... The 7 hour flight had almost 3.5 hour with turbulence at above India all the way along the Bay of Bengal until we nearly reached Langkawi's airspace..... I remember seeing the 787's wing starting to look like flapping bird wing..... Quite an experience for my first B787 flight :)

I love the IL86 too. Pulkovo airport had 2 IL 86. RA-86106 it is 1 of them. I flew on this planes 2008 before, at that time I was 7. At the moment, I have made more than 30 flights on different types of aircraft, including Tu154, TU214, Boeing airbus, etc. but after such a long time, for me the IL 86 remains the most favorite aircraft. This plane, albeit very old and not cost-effective, taught me to love the sky.
