It was my first shift ever in fire watch detail and I was standing guard in front of the duty hut. A drill instructor came in and immediate started berating me for not reporting my post. I immediately fucked this up, soon after three more DI’s came and then started soaking me in spit like I was at a water park. Man, what a welcome initiation to the rigors of Marine Corps boot camp. 😅

The three days after swim qual, when the all my drill instructor and swim qual instructor found out that I was a swimmer in local/school and state levels! Lets just say that I made them all look like fools, and wasn’t trying to! Lets just say that my senior drill instructor and one of the officers in charge decided that they would be the ones to break me at the swim qual! The order came like this… drop down the side of the pool( deep end) and start swimming across as many times as you can full uniform except boots! Senior drill instructor lasted 3 laps, officer 3 1/2 laps, I stopped at 5 laps across the pool! “Ruck swim “(no splashing) 2hrs 15 minutes later I was called aside and the “adjusted “ my pack, 20 lbs of steel weights still out swam both of them! So the scariest part of basic was heading onto the quarter deck each morning for three days, just to make sure I didn’t tell anyone about the added challenges of the additional swim qual, and out doing many of the instructors!

I was fire watch this was in 1975, my platoon was out practicing close order drill, the series Gunny came into the squad bay and of course I had to call the place to attention even tho no one was in there but me . The Gy came up to me and started quizzing me on knowledge which I knew well, then all hell was about to happen to me, he asked where my platoon was I said that Drill Instructor Pvt (his last name) was drilling the recruits he said what so I repeated myself, but actually the person I called Pvt was my SDI, so the GY said very well carry on I felt proud on myself that I answered all his questions and knew my knowledge, so watching him walk across the grinder and stop and talk to my SDI and then a split second later I saw his smokie come off and him running towards the squad bay, then it dawned on me that I called my SDI a PVT not once but twice to the series GY OMG I knew I was “toast” this was in the 70’s stuff happened to me that could not be done now but I still remember, I retired after 20 years as a GY and I still smile thinking about that.

Scariest moment would probably be when 2nd Btn. SgtMaj., SgtMaj. O'Laughlin asked me why I didn't give him the proper greeting of the day after I had my wisdom teeth pulled out. So, I stopped pointing at my mouth and tried to say, "GOOD AFTERNOON, SIR" except all I did was get blood and drool all over him as he proceeded to loose his ever loving mind. And then told my Senior what happened as he was running me back to the house where he proceeded to scream things I didn't even know the English language contained. He tore the house apart, had me tear shit apart, and then make a Mount Fuji out of boots in the rain room, and then he left. Pretty sure he still hates me 15 years later.

The scariest part of Basic at P.I. was the day that was dubbed "Pick Up Day", the day we met our Drill Instructors. We stood in the rain, for at least a half hour at attention, with our SeaBags, and other equipment we were issued: then the demons came for us. It was sheer terror, and madness, up was down and down was up It didn't really help that we spent almost 3 days with almost NO SLEEP, so "Pick Up Day", was even worse due to being so discombobulated.

I was more shocked than scared but all of receiving was not very cool. I didn’t have a bowel movement until the 5th night on the Depot. Our receiving DI looked like Brutus The Barber Beefcake and had little patience. This is back when we had to stencil all our trash like PT gear with shoe polish. Cleaning anything and everything. I always thought that was one of the big reasons recruits always feared going to MRP or PCP cause they’re basically worse versions of being in a receiving platoon.

One day in the chow hall, a DI decided to pick me to go off on. I never got picked on in basic because I always did what I was supposed to. I don't remember everything about it because it happened so fast. The DI slung by food tray on the ground, then started yelling something about me trying to throw it at him. Then another DI from another platoon came over and went off of me because he thought that I tried to throw my food at him. They went crazy on me and then made me pick my food up. I remember being so hungry that I was about to eat the food that I picked up from the floor. The guy sitting across from me gave me a roll. Later, another recruit went to the senior DI and told him all about it. Senoir DI brought me into the DI hut and gave me food and told me that he was going to take care of that DI. This same DI was removed from another platoon before he came to mine because he went overboard on recruits. He was also the same guy who came in drunk one day and threw up and asked me to clean it up. He asked me if it smelled like margaritas because that's what he was drinking the night before.

Waiting to go up a high wall by pulling myself up with a rope. I was so afraid that I would fall that I worried that another recruit standing nearby might see me trembling. But when my turn came to go up that wall, I went right up to the wall, grabbed the rope and went straight up, stopping only once, briefly, (while hearing a Training Instructor screaming instructions to me) and completed that and all the other obstacles. I can never thank the U. S. Air Force for that and all other valuable lessons that I learned while seving. God bless America 🇺🇸.

I had a DI throw shoe box at me first night on MCRD. But most scariest moment was the rapell tower

I fell asleep in receiving. Nothing good came from that. I can't remember how long they had us up for

The first morning after we got our DI’s. It just seemed like I shut my eyes, and the lights came on, the DI’s yelling at us. Getting dressed by the numbers. The barracks smelled like moth balls and I realized I made a big mistake.
