@Jim Young Agreed. I did 1200 skydives, 800 of then wingsuit jumps, before I started my BASE career. That career saw me remain a novice BASE jumper, doing 220 or so slick jumps. I bought a set-up and BASE specific wingsuit to head to Brento to take a WS BASE course, but eventually realized that I was going to live too close to the risk/reward line, and that inevitably, I would succumb to a bad decision. It has been almost one year since my last BASE jump. I sold all my BASE gear and I consider myself lucky. I got in and got out and I survived. I hope all WS BASE (and all BASE) jumpers find what they are looking for and then get out while they can. John

A number of years ago I took a scuba diving instructor certification course in Southern California so I could teach scuba diving. One of the rules we were taught by the instructors was that if you feel apprehensive about a scuba dive then don't go on the dive. There was one morning when we were going on a training dive from the beach and when we got there the surf was very rough, waves braking on the beach were 10 feet or so high. Some of us including myself could have gone ahead but it would have been impossible as a training dive so it was cancelled, no one complained, including two former US Navy Seals who were taking the course. Mister Bock, I am not trying to tell you what to do, but you don't have anything to prove to anyone. Quit while you are ahead.

This made me think to google glide ratios of a wingsuit and parachute. I always thought you have the safety of a parachute if you think you wont make it as long as there is enough space for it. But correct me if I'm wrong but ratio for wingsuit is 3:1 and parachute only 2,5:1 so even in spots where there was enough space for parachute you would crash since it looked like you maxed the ratio of your wingsuit. So you had to hold it.
@TrevorBock
@TrevorBock Жыл бұрын
Maybe not, but almost certainly yes. There is also a very large 'no-pull zone' where canopy sink upon opening would likely end in impact, so that's a big issue too. Shortly before my flare to pitch my glide maxed out at 4:1 and it was over 3:1 the whole time after the turn out of the canyon, but I did have plenty of altitude for a cruisey landing, to give you an idea.

As cool as the video looks you might consider cooling your jets. The reason you might be super scared is your subconscious brain is telling you that you are beyond your limits!!! Consider backing out and just chalk it down to “that was a good idea but not realistic”. No one will judge you for making sensible decisions.
@TrevorBock

A beautiful part of BASE jumping is it's unregulated nature. We make our own decisions based on our own sensibilities and are free to suffer the consequences of them.
@user23724
@user23724 Жыл бұрын
Quite the opposite. You know you are beyond your limits if you are NOT scared. A healthy amount of fear is a good thing, it's what keeps us precautious and safe. Any reasonable, sensible, level headed, experienced jumper is going to be afraid of this jump, because they know the risks and they aren't naive.
@GodzillaGoesGaga
@GodzillaGoesGaga Жыл бұрын
@@user23724 Politely I disagree. Fear can be managed and most people who do risk sports tame their fear so that they can keep a calm mind. When you push yourself back into the ‘fear zone’ (especially if it’s debilitating fear) after you have spent a lot of time training you are beyond your limits.
