My Secret Homesteading Weapon for 2023

Welcome to our latest video! Today on Fall Line Ridge, we're taking you on a journey through a typical day (or two) on our homestead.
Our day begins with the arrival of our new baby chicks. We'll show you how we carefully transport them home and prepare their new living space. My son and I build a new brooder, feed and water them, and set up a heat lamp to keep them warm.
Next up, we'll be getting ready for the arrival of our new pigs. We'll start the process of moving the pig pen to a more convenient spot (next to the chicken coop). We'll also talk about our new pig management plans for the year.
In addition to preparing for our new livestock, we'll also be unboxing and setting up some new electric netting from VEVOR. We'll take you through the process, explaining how it works and how it will help to keep our livestock secure.
As we go about our day, we'll also be dealing with some practical tasks, such as replacing a leaky water spigot and changing the oil in our Kubota L4701 Tractor.

Training pigs to electric is imperative. When they are learning and getting those first shocks they go straight as fast as they can, right thru the fence unless they are trained. Love the father - son interaction, you are both fortunate!

I bought me an incubator and hatch out my own chicks... What A Blast! It's really cool for the little kids to experience too. Over the last 10 years I have hatched lots of chicks & ducks & turkeys and gone through 2 incubators... I have a back yard flock in a remote rural town in SE Arizona. They free range all around the property. Got me some rabbits too, colony style. Not in cages.

We kept our pigs in with a stand of electric fence about 1-2 inches off the ground. Barbed wire 6-7 inches up from that and then another strand of elec. fence another 6-7 inches from the middle one and then another strand of barbed wire above that a few inches. Electrified wire with a solar charger.

Great video! I would suggest making yourself a 6 foot wooden gate for the pig pen, well secured with a couple T-posts. When it comes time to set-up the new pig paddock, build it on the other side of that gate and the pigs will go right through when you open it, especially if they are bucket trained and you don't feed them for about a day. Good luck!

Don't know if you want to try this or not but with all those metal roofs, think of installing a gutter and running the rainwater to a trough. In GA, yall get a good bit of rain and it can help watering critters instead of pulling hose pipe

Great video showing the hotwire fence, should work a treat. One thing though when replacing the filter on your Kubota don't use the filter removal tool to tighten up the new filter as this can rip the new seal out of the filter and cause all sorts of problems down the line. you only have to smear a film of new oil on the new rubber seal and screw the filter on until it contacts the base and then using your hands tighten another 3/4 quarters of a turn and that is enough. As a background I worked on cars and trucks most of my life, I'm retired and turning 70 this year. Cheers and good luck with the pigs................Oh and hi from downunder

As a mechanic when you put on your oil filter you need just to lube the gasket and put on hand tight you don't need is tighten up with the wrench

I was taught as you take the chicks from the box you dip their beaks into the water & then put them down on the floor.

I did that because the instructions told me to (off camera). Honestly I doubt the farmers that get 500 meat chickens are doing that, so I'm not so sure it's necessary.

@@falllineridge, you're right about the 500. However, the reason the chicks that have been shipped (like the post office) have had none for 3 days. It is done to rehydrate them and find their water source. They then will find their food next. Thanks for your reply.

I save zip ties the same way that you are showing. If I can't get them to open like that, I will cut the tie right next to the female piece so that I have a short tie that I can use again. For the pig feed, you might look into getting a gravity wagon and having a bulk delivery from a feed store. That will be a lot cheaper than buying 50# bags. Even getting your corn delivered that way would help. Or you might be able to buy direct from a local farmer.

I have been told to put stones or marbles in the waterer because chicks actually get in it and drown. Don't know how reliable that advice is but nothing to lose by doing it

That wire is only good for keeping the big chickens out. What adout rats, snakes, etc. The fabric wire with the smallest holes would be so much better. Your babies can kinda fly after about two weeks. They will just jump at least 6 feet at the slightest thing.

I'm 63 years old. I have a 45 year old son and a 16 year old grandson I'm going to tell you. Spend all the time you can with that boy get over it fast if he ever irritates you. You will miss having a little boy once he is grown and has to go to work to support his own family.

Don't use an adjustable wrench on drain plugs, it will round it out over time. Use the correct size of box end wrench. One hour of running is supposed to be equal to 50 miles of driving.

Your coop looks awesome. Every time I see it I question wether I want the rustic, or the new construction painted look. Those mealworms are expensive at TSC, so I’ll look into this as well. As for the pigs.. I’ve seen where someone used a gate between 2 pens so he could rotate. He would spread seed a couple days before switching pens. Another thing.. On the gate he found that putting a panel on the gate made it easier for the pigs to realize the open access and cross the boundary between pens.

Just FYI, you may want to consider adding some additional protection between the pigs and the chickens. In the event something does happen and the pigs get out, they do and will try to eat those chickens.

Nicely done everything video. These are probably my favorite ones, like a day in the life. I hope you have better luck with Vevor than we did. Purchased one of their 30 gallon fuel stations and the hand crank pump died in two months. Vevor's response was to transfer us to another department and completely blow us off. We had found several products on their website to order but I believe we will pass on Vevor. We can buy the same kinds of items elsewhere but may pay more, which is OK if they last.

It took a few months, being transferred to numerous people, jumping through all of their silly hoops like being asked to take a picture of the pump not working...think about that, "take a picture of the pump not working", that is the intelligence level of people you are dealing with. I was told because I bought it on Amazon they would only transfer me to another department, which ignored me, but I kept on, I showed them we bought it off the Vevor Store on Amazon and finally they agreed to send another unit, not just the defective pump but a complete tank and pump. To anyone reading this that has a defective Vevor product, keep emailing them until you are bigger annoyance to them than just replacing the product would be. The gas tank itself is fantastic so when the replacement pump dies in a couple months I will replace it with a better pump.

You might want to clean the airfilter too as a part of the maintenance.

I am not an expert on tractor but I believe it all depends on how you use your tractor if you are on it from morning till night change more often the oil will get a lot more hot then when you use your tractor only once in a while and I think the Manuel tells you those specification on tractor that work every 8 or plus hours let other people say what they think have a great day

You should NEVER use a wrench to tighten the oil filter. thats why it is really tight to get off and there will come a time when you may hurt something getting it off doing it that way

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you here. I'd much rather have to use my wrench to remove my tractor's oil filter than have the vibrations of the tractor cause the oil filter to potentially spin loose and then my tractor's engine burns up from oil starvation.

@@ronicard Has never heard of a spin-on filter loosing it self. Oiling the sealant and handtightening is all it takes. Using a monkeywrench on the drainplugs is also a big NO-NO in my world. Has seen one too many tragic weldons, just to be able to drain the sump....

It would be pretty easy to do that for sure. Problem is that they won'y be in one single place very long, so probably not much point in laying new pipe for that. I've got high hopes for the netting for sure! Thanks for stopping by!

Having agricultural meat and eggs is great convenience. Ecologically it is not sustainable on the land everything from corn and soy monoculture crops down to the synthetic fencing. I would suggest look into deer and other wild meat (depending on your region may even have wild hog) hunting or even barter with other locals for your lumber products. After learning the process, that is truly God's meat, after all they mostly eat oak acorns and everything else from forest areas. Food for thought. Love your attitude and the channel.

You need to let one or two of your hens set a nest. You won’t need a brooder and you won’t have to buy chicks. However I don’t think that will be a problem in the future because a couple of them will do it on there own under the chicken house. A bonus is that you will have several young roosters to put in the freezer. Don’t ask me how I know this will happen on it’s own if you let them under the hen house. That is if you have a rooster to start with.

I went to the Oswald's bear ranch in the central U.P. to see how they keep bears in. So I could keep build coup to keep bears out of the chickens when we move up there. Eggs cost one way or another.

I have a nice brooder box you could have used. We've used it for quail and chickens buy probably won't use it this year. Get a couple of plastic pallets and use tposts to secure them to the ground. I put a barrel like you have on the pallet and screwed some rubber food bowls to the same pallet. This way I could fill the water and food without needing to walk into the pen. 8 pigs is going to be a challenge. The smell in August will be a lot of fun. If you want to do 10 I'll be glad to let you raise me a couple. We are going to be RVing a lot this year so livestock will be problematic. I have a dad dadgum spigot that leaks unless I have the thing turned sideways. Irritating for sure.
