Suggestion for the area of land that gets too much wind, you could put a row or two of trees for a small orchard, either fruits or nuts, or build a quick post and wire frame for climbing bushes, such as blackberries and whatnot, to not only act as a windbreak but also provide produce. Considering the wide-open area and lack of shade, you'd want to look for something sun-loving. Or maybe just plant a bunch of sunflowers, they would thrive in an area like that, once it's been improved by the chickens.

You should think about planting some kind of wind break for the area that gets so much wind.. Even when you get the soil built up the wind will be tearing up your garden. We did a row of 60 lilacs.. To try and break up the wind that hits our garden.. There's a lot things you could grow that would be better than lilacs I'm sure. I'm loving your compost area/routine.. I'm glad your getting to enjoy this pregnancy Ben

Would not cutting grass on that area or leaving it longer between the cutting. Sun beating down it and the wind need to leave the grass longer. Place looks good. Enjoy.

send one of the kids up in the tree house with a camera and give us a tour. A more effective wind break rather than a row of something is to stagger bushes and trees about 2-3 rows in a zigzag pattern. It will increase the birds (and insect eating) and create a nice micro forest garden area. A wind break is most effective when it lets 70% of the wind to pass thru.

It’s wonderful the way you share the workload on your farm! With four boys, you won’t have much work when they get older! I love your land! Your garden is really nice. I grew up on a very sloped property in Appalachia. My parents grew wonderful food there. We had a large garden very close to our house and some small “patches” of extra vegetables in other places. Dad’s aunt had moved away and her property joined ours and she had land at the bottom of our hill that was flat, so we grew extra food there too. My mother loved canning and we always had jars of vegetables to share. You are really getting a lot done on your land. I like the way your farm is “rolling” land. It’s really pretty! I can’t wait to watch more of your videos! We grew lots of chickens, too. I am in my seventies now and I’m certainly enjoying videos of your farm, as they remind me of my life when I was young! Although I was rather tired of helping with the farm work, canning vegetables and all, I went to college and became a teacher. Yet I will always enjoy seeing others grow plants and raise animals and chickens! Everyone stays busy all day and sleep very well, too!

You have a sound composting system. Two optional improvements would be A) Stack your piles taller. Compost thrives on height. B) dress your new piles with mature compost, not a lot, less than your current dirt ratio. The mature, I have found speeds up the beginning stage of the breakdown. And I guess it might be C) sift the finished compost. This just makes the compost so you can apply it from something like a salt shaker. Great for dressing growing crops.

I can't believe how far you have come along with this homestead in such a short time. The gardens look lush, your chickens, ducks and turkeys are thriving and your boys are becoming real young men taking on more responsibility with the animals. They are so tender with the chickens when they are getting moved, each gets a little cuddle. I know you are very proud of them. Thank you so much for sharing your precious time with us. Have a Blessed day.

I've had my ducklings in the house for two weeks, they are getting kicked out to the barn tomorrow. It doesn't matter how many times I clean out the brooder, they stink!

You have been so busy! Meg is looking lovely❤ I had the same problem with my duck brooder. I had a lot of success with training them to rabbit water bottles. The difference is night and day. I did let them play in water in a kiddie pool once a day. Dried them and put them back in the brooder. Hope this helps.

I just love the way your boy's treat the chicken and duck, just wish all children are like that, a credit to you both, for teaching them the right way to behave around farm animals! I feel so many farm animals are tortured by the children. Yes, you do, do a lot of work on your farm, but look at it once that is done your work load will be less, It's just now when there are lot's of things to do is a really, really busy time, but know you are doing great work for your family! Your boys are good workers also, they are going to be awesome adults! Thanks to you for all you do! Take care that way, much Blessings to you all!

I Love your love for your sons. We have 2 grown sons and as their Mama I see how their love and concern along with interest is totally different with my husband and me. Their conversations on the phone are different with us. Now they have given us 4 precious Granddaughters and soon a great grandson. Thanks for sharing your hard work along with Megan. I will be so glad when you are through rebuilding your home. Then you can rest some. lol

Ben, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Thank you so much for filming this for us. It felt like we were on a walk around your property with you, catching up with a good friend. Meg, you look great. Pregnancy agrees with you. Those boys of yours are getting big! My word, how they have grown. It's nice to see them too. Continued blessings to you all. xo Heather🇨🇦
