I keep a photo of my finished items in an album, just one of the front and back, so that if I make it again I can look for any fit issues I might want to change. Also highly recommend keeping your fabric in sight so you always know what you have. I also keep an index card in a box with a sample of the fabric, just a two inch square, recording the metreage, width, composition and if it is directional or any other notes. Saves so much time just to look through some index cards and knowing how much fabric you have. Happy organising.

I now try and tidy up as I go as I hate mess and I now have a little basket that I use to put all the things that I’m using for the garment I’m making for example seam ripper 😜 scissor etc otherwise they all end up where I can’t find them especially on the floor and then when I’m finished I just put them all away 👏🏼👏🏼

Definitely not making any sewing resolutions. Not needing any extra pressure. So relieved to finally be coming up on the other side of a very rough surgery. Did think that if I made two garments a month and only get one new fabric in every month in my beyond the pink door subscription box that eventually my garment fabric stash size would be reduced. Fun to hear you say that you used to buy 1 yard pieces of fabric too. I did in the beginning. Don't know what I was thinking ! Probably not thinking as one yard barely fits my granddaughter :). Did manage to use a one yard piece on the main part of the Mandy boat tee (fudged only a tiny bit on cutting out the back). Then color blocked the sleeves which are a big tight but still wearable so wrote myself a note for the next time. 🤗

I want to challenge myself to find patterns and fabric from my stash to build more of my wardrobe. I want to come up with 3 pieces at a time that can work with each other and other things in my closet. (I get overwhelmed then bored if I plan more than that.-I know. I'm weird.) I want to sew dresses for Project Dress A Girl again this year. (I picked one pattern last year and it was very simple to make. I want to do that again so I will just get them made.) I want to sew up more of my WIPS. (shaking my head) The most important resolution is I want to keep sewing fun. I don't like to put pressure on myself around my sewing at all because I do it for my mental health. It needs to stay relaxing and enjoyable. Happy sewing and thanks for the video!

I laughed out loud when you talked about not opening the umbrella inside - my Scottish Grandma would have had a heart attack on the spot lol. Also I’m a sewer and a quilter. A few years back I bought a Husqvarna machine with a wider throat for quilting. But it also had tons of stitch choices (about 100 I think) and lots of other capabilities After using the machine for straight stitch and zigzag for quite a long time, I watched a Craftsy video where they suggested making a stitch bible of every stitch type so that you could see how they looked in different widths and lengths. Best time investment ever. I still refer to those ‘pages’ that I put in a binder especially now that I sew for grandchildren. Take the time and learn your machine- you won’t be disappointed! So enjoy your videos!!

Great content Ruan. It's hard balancing everything in life, especially when you work full time, have kids and have hobbies you want to pursue. There's always so many mundane chores that need doing as well. I hardly have any time for sewing in the week as I'm shattered after work so really only get a few hours on a Sunday so I have to make the most of it. I don't actually make resolutions as I feel pressured by that but I am making a conscious decision to only buy fabric I need for projects in mind and not just because they are on offer or just because I like it. I like lots of fabric but it's not always practical and I wouldn't wear it all so it sits in my stash 🙄. I'm also going to be more efficient with logging my makes too, as it helps to look back at any adjustments I made for different people I've made things for and any issues I came across etc etc. Another goal is to reduce my stash but isn't everybody doing that this year lol. I love that umbrella 🌂 😍

Good evening Ruan, what a brilliant vlog, so positive. I have the same project book in a different colour to yours. I agree it is great to be able to refer back to your makes. I have chosen (up to now) 4 fabrics from my stash I want to use in the next few weeks/months. Once I have done that, I hope to then choose another 4 or 5 fabrics to use. The same goes for patterns. I want to try to make my gathering neater (I’m useless at it) I want to make a TATB Lyra dress but the fit needs “tweaking”. The to do list book is a good idea I bought one from the Works and have started to use it. I love a ‘to do’ list. I even noted I needed to tidy up my flower arranging shed after using it before Christmas . Happy sewing take care. 🧵🪡👋🏻

Hello friend! Wow, you have a lot of goals. I don’t do resolutions. It has never worked for me 😅. I do have goals which I write down and work on. It’s not a yearly thing but ideas and projects that come to mind. I’m a list person, organizer and planner. Last year things got a little out of hand because of my surgery, got COVID, and my father’s passing. Yep, it was the summer from hell 😶. I’m proud to say that I’m getting a handle on it and can do almost everything I used to do😃. Yep, I rock! Slowing down and trying to enjoy your life is so important. You don’t have to do cram everything in. My New Years wish for you is to enjoy your life. It’s the one lesson that I’ve learned. I’m excited about your sewing room and would be very interested in seeing how you’re going to set it up. I’m cleaning out my room and trying to visualize how it will look. Thank you for sharing! Hello Ruan. New larger sewing room sounds exciting. Great resolutions. Lots to think about. I have folded and hung my fabrics from hangers in a spare closet. I got this idea from Andrea on one of her older vlogs. It works really well unless the fabric is longer and heavier. I can see how much I have at a glance and when I take one out it doesn’t mess things up. Love it. One resolution or goal is to not try and save something as you can always buy more. The best way to preserve a fabric is to make it up in a garment.

I found I am more apt to use my fabric that I have if I can see it. When it was in clear bins at our old house (grand-cat's claws!) I would have to unstack the bins and sort through what I had. Now that we have moved and grand-cat has moved with the man-child I can have my fabrics out on the shelves and I can shop through it and find it's more pleasurable. I wonder, if you kept your sewing journal with your patterns (tucked in the front of one of the bins) if that would help you to remember to grab it when you grab out your pattern to sew the garment. When I worked in a fabric store one of my coworkers was a professional seamstress and her husband built her a table out of hollow doors. Two doors that stacked on top of each other and hinged at the front, mounted on base kitchen cupboards that were drawers. The top door where the top one had her ironing cover stapled right to the top of the WHOLE door! BUT, you could flip that door towards you and that was her cutting table! He mounted with double stick industrial tape her cutting mats to the other side of the door which gave her a cutting space of 6 feet by 6 feet. If I remember right, he had made two leg supports that pulled towards you, similar to a table that you can pull apart to add a leaf to make it bigger. It fit in the space above the top drawer and I think it had sliders that were attached under the door that was mounted to the cupboard. When you pulled on the handle the legs slid out about half the width of the door when folded open. Just enough that if you leaned on the door it wouldn't break the hinge. I was pretty impressed seeing this set up when I was getting fitted for my 'going away' outfit for my wedding. She kept a peg board on the wall where the table extended when opened with her cutting scissors, measuring tapes, tailor chalk, pins (clips weren't a thing then-I'm old! lol) etc. There was even a pocket that she kept the pattern she was working on in. She had her sewing room in a spare bedroom so had to make use of the space she had but with making wedding dresses etc she needed a large cutting and ironing area. Even if you had a single door wall mounted that you could fold down for your cutting table would help save space in your new sewing room.

I also need a tidy space to be creatively inspired. I'm trying to manage my stash as well. I added up all the yardage that I currently own and plan to work through about 25% of it by the end of the year. I'm not restricting myself from buying, but I want to move through a lot of what I'm starting the year with. I also want to be better about documenting my makes WHEN I make them. Thank you for sharing Ruan! I'd like to get more confident with fabric shopping this year (by educating myself a bit more about what lasts well and what I like: starting with a Ponte Roma durability experiment). I think this is the year that I might try drafting a sloper (I've seen Sanae Ishida's book Sewing Love and I WANTS IT). I'm not a "standard shape" and I think understanding this more might help me choose patterns and sizes (particularly with woven fabric: knits are my comfort zone).

Thanks for the video. I keep a sewing journal, and am in my second year of it - even if some of the entries say 'haven't kept up, made blah, blah, blah' This year, I want to just make clothes I need or will love. Like you, I want to keep up with documenting things more so that it is more useful I am just in the process of putting my quilting scraps together to make a honea jacket from Megan Neilsen. I also need some winter/spring trousers, and so will make some luna pants from made by rae - I have some gorgeous aubergine light cord fabric, but will do the waistband facing (there isn't one in the pattern, but I do one to lengthen the rise) and pockets in poplin to cut down on bulk. I also want to get on with some quilt making. I have lots of people I would like to gift quilts to, and usually make 2 or 3 each year. This year, I want to send one each month on average to the long-armer for quilting. I piece and bind them myself, but usually have them quilted by a long-armer. I have one top finished, and another where the blocks are finished, but need laying out and sewing together. I have the backing for one ready, need to get other ready, and both are already booked in with the long-armer - she will usually be able to quilt them up around 6 weeks from booking in, so I sometimes book them in before the quilt is finished (you know, to keep me on my toes!) I also want to try a 'quilt as you go' quilt this year. If I can get good at this, I will be able to do more of the whole process myself sometimes. My quilting stash is bigger than my garment fabric stash, and I want to make a concerted effort to plough through both this year. Thanks again for the videos and good luck with your resolutions x

@@julieannemooreedwards9909 I started my sewing hobby without a machine so I had to learn how to sew everything by hand. It takes practice to get neat button holes with a needle and thread lol.

I decided this year I need to set some sewing and even life resolutions. #1 keep my sewing room tidier. #2 finish projects before starting new ones. #3 keep using fabric from the stash. My great niece will be starting school in September and I plan on making her some outfits just using fabrics from my stash. Two wins on that one, it will save money for her parents and it will help use up lots of smaller pieces of fabric. Because I still work and my husband is retired I feel quite guilty spending evenings in the sewing room, I think I will move an older sewing machine down stairs so that I can still sew but be close by so we can chat as he is watching tv. Family time is so important.

When you said 'manage my stash' I tried to hide from the TV 😅 I really need to do this as well. It's been almost 5 years since I went to Japan and I still have fabric from that trip as well as everything else 🙈

My thing is the different feet that come with the machine. Move out of just using straight stitch foot and zipper foot😂

I saw a lady on the school run in the week with one of those magical umbrellas 🌂 ✨️ I need one. I spent hours and hours sorting my room out then when I was out my husband thought my little girl was playing nice in her bedroom...nope she was in my sewing room and had "helped" , every drawer rearranged, things I needed were in the bin, random crap from her toy box in my fabric cupboards and 7 tubes of glitter sprinkled ok every surface and the carpet 🙈

A bug bare of mine is having to buy fabrics on line in 1/2 metre increments, which I think is wasteful
@theyorkshiresewgirl Жыл бұрын
Yes I think it’s very hard to set up smaller increments on people’s websites. I’ve heard a lot of business owners say they’ve tried to do it but the money involved in changing their website system meant it just wasn’t commercially viable for them 😞

Hi Ruan! It seems to me that some scammer is pretending to be you on YT, including your picture. I got a reply to my comment from „you“ that I won a price and should contact you via telegram. Just wanted to let you know, seems to happen to a lot of creators.

Yes I know 😞. So annoying. I can’t see what the messages said but people have let me know. I’ve put something out on my KZbin community tab and instagram x
