Elizabeth, your Singer machine is a 201, which is called the "Rolls Royce" of sewing machines. It is widely known to be the best machine Singer ever made, and the Rolls Royce company actually chose this model to sew their leather interiors. Get her off the floor and give her the respect she deserves!!! ☺

I have one, as well. You are right about the beauty of the stitch this machine sews. I have several machines, a couple of which could have almost bought a small car, but none can compete with this beautiful straight stitch.

You have a very nice room! I love the vintage feel but updated look as well! I’ve been wanting to try a Janome machine for a long time but not sure which one to purchase. I’ve been using a Singer machine for years which it seems the older it gets the tougher it gets on what it can handle lol so maybe I will stick with it! 💕

You have a LOVELY sewing room! I like how you keep track of your needles, and which one you are using. How do you know when a needle is shot and it is time to dispose of it? I always read that we should change our needle frequently, but I never notice a difference when I change my needle.

Thank you! Ah good question: I grab a sharpie and mark on the shaft after each project. When It's been through 3-4 projects (depending on size), I'll grab a fresh one.

I would bet you name your machines. I put a small piece of velcro on the back of my machine needle packages and the opposite velcro on my machine. Then I put the needle package on my machine to show which needle I have in my machine.

Thank you Beverley. Cozy is a word I've definitely thought a lot about in putting my room together. It sounds like that's a word that would help you out in the cold as well! I'm never without my space heater in my room which didn't make it onto the tour, but it's there year round as the basement is definitely chilly except in the dead heat of summer. Thanks so much for watching!

Your space is fantastic Elizabeth! I see a fork on your scissor magnetic band. What do you use it for 👀😅 I love the stretch guide idea! Very useful!
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Judith. The fork is for late night snacking--just kidding! 😂😂 No, for real, I use it for pleating fabrics. The fork makes for really even width pleats that you don't have to measure, and that little cocktail fork makes a nice width pleat that I particularly like. The stretch guide has been a really useful thing for those random knits I pick up on sale that have I have no information on.

What an awesome sewing space Elizabeth! Cool dress form, nice that it has arms, lol. I love that you named it after your Gram, she certainly would be proud of you:) I think computerized sewing machines are great for us sewists who shy away from or don't have sergers and cover stitch machines. I use my overcast stitch/foot all the time. I really need to learn to use my moms serger but I'm a coward I guess, lol.
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rikki. I'm looking forward to the arms in helping me determine sleeve lengths a little better--I always have to shorten them, and it'd be great to make a mark and be done with it. You're so right about computerized machines. My first machine that I had as a kid was mechanical and it seemed so complicated/user hostile at the time that I didn't use it at all to its full potential. When I picked it up again as an adult, I was amazed at how easy the computerized machine was to use, and how nice all the different feet were. I'd love to have a machine that was the best of both worlds. A good solid, fast machine with straight stitch, zigzag, different buttonholes and nothing else. Sergers take some time to make friends with, but then you'll be inseparable!

Hi Elizabeth, fantastic space and my favourite tip was having the measuring lines for your stretch fabric.... great idea 👍😘
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Sally! I use that little gauge all the time. There's so many instances where a particular pattern will call for a certain percentage of stretch, but unless you've shopped at a place that records that, it can be a guessing game. The stretch guide is perfect for those times!

I had to laugh, I voted my buttons truly are a free for all! Enjoyed seeing your sewing space. ! I like the way you and your mom wallpapered the table. On my list is to get a large rotary cutting mat too. Would love to see a pattern stash video. BRILLIANT idea of gluing the measuring tape to the table. I'm going to buy a another measuring tape and do that. I have masking tape marking the spots for 36"s now. You have your own woman cave - LOL

There's something joyful about a big tin of buttons cascading all over the place, LOL! If I weren't so hard wired to see in color, I'd happily have a big aquarium of them and go fishing when need be! The large rotary mat is such a great thing--it saves so much time, and it's just so convenient. Someone else commented on that, but mine is by MegaMat--I'll put up a link in the description box. I love the little tape measure too. Since I put mine up, I've since seen adhesive backed tapes just for that purpose--so smart and easy! It is truly a woman cave!!!

If you want to sew fat stuff like jeans you need a one amp motor. That Singer is from a world where women didn’t wear denim. White machines are ace at denim, the fifties ones on.

I'm so envious of having a dedicated sewing space. My place is so small the living room is now my sewing space and it's small. ?Do you use your dress form for fitting or for just photographing? ?Where did you get your plexiglass machine extension table? I would really like to have one; do you have a recommendation? ?where do you get your fabric tubes? I like your art, especially the pumpkin on the door. I like the the bandana idea for craft projects. I think I'll do that. Sorry for the wordiness, LOL, but you did ask: To organize I have decorative boxes, some round stacked hat boxes stacked with bobbins, needles, pins) and another with standard thread, a decorative box with Guterman thread and another with decorative top stitching threads, a sectioned plastic storage cases for buttons, clear storage boxes w/interfacing, ribbing, zippers, warm linings for winter coats, grosgrain ribbon, narrow ribbons, lace, pattern tracing supplies , elastic, and embroidery thread, a foot stool that has storage space for some scissors, quilting pins, Velcro, seam binding & liquid supplies, and drawers (one with pressing tools and one with machine feet, pins, scissors, basting tapes, button hole spacer, etc). Most everything is hidden because it's also my living/entertaining space. My make 9 fabrics are on hangers so they remain visible (for me it's out of sight, out of mind) and other projects and fabrics are in labeled storage bins currently stacked in my bedroom and storage shed. My entire house is only 550 square feet. I've had to be very creative in utilizing every crook and cranny. My currently favorite patterns are in boxes some on an overhead clothes closet and some on a dresser in my bathroom (the only space left). The biggest problem I have is that my cutting table is my dining table and my computer desk. I use my computer a LOT so sewing and computering often are in conflict. I also use cans and jars for organizing. I store (and hide) my rotary mat behind my couch and cutting pad behind my book case. In my fishing tackle box I have the snaps, collar stays, grommets, applique pieces, and various craft doo dads. I don't have an over locker or serger so I do use the decorative stitches for finishing seams, otherwise I would agree that it's not really an important feature.
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sage. I think in the end you figure out what works for your space. It sounds like you've got a great system of organization that works for you. The clear table is called Sew Steady, and it's a custom make. I think I ordered mine from All Brands. You tell them what your make and model is and they manufacture a table that will fit your specific machine--it takes a couple weeks, but they're so wonderful. It reduces a lot of drag on the fabric, so you can sew more accurately with fewer pins, and they pop off easily when you need to sew something in the round. They're like the old vintage tables where your sewing machine sits flush with the top but portable. They make them for sergers and embroidery machines as well--I think I've even seen them for people's Featherweights! The information on the fabric tubes is on the fabric organization video, but anyhow, they are cardboard mailing tubes sans caps I got from a shipping supply company. The pumpkin is courtesy one of my sons. :) The dress form is very new to me. It will be primarily for fitting as I don't have great light for pics, and hauling it upstairs is not my jam! 😂

Great space. Mine is in the corner of my dining room, even though the 4 kids have now moved out and we have 4 spare bedrooms! I agree about all the stitches on the machines. I received a new machine for Christmas that I wanted just for the speed control, auto buttonholer and needle threader. It also has 59 stitch settings, of which I have probably use 6m including the straight, zig-zag and stretch stitches.

Hi Crystal: it is 4'X6'. It's a custom topper that my husband built to fit an old dining room table, and the table itself is up on risers--similar to those bed risers you see, but again made in wood by my husband to fit and be a little more secure. I hope that helps!

Hi Rosie. Yes, zippers can get rather pricey. When I'm traveling, I always try to buy an assortment. There's almost always a store in garment districts of big cities where you can buy zippers inexpensively, though it often means digging through bins to find the right color and length. Sometimes sewing expos will have a vendor with similar wares. I've found some of my very favorite zippers this way. Ebay is also a really great resource as you can buy large lots of zippers for reasonable prices--they usually come in random colors or basic colors like white (you can never have too many white zippers!!) or black.
