I don't mind the ego here. "My Shot" reflect's LMM feeling that Hamilton was a hip-hop story with his big, arrogant energy & having something to say with forceful yet captivating words. Add the adversity against him, beef with his peers, a hunger to change his circumstances & make a name for himself: his story truly echoes that of many hip hop artists. Brilliant.

To the point of Hamilton coming across egotistical and arrogant in this number, for me, I think that's kind of the point. One of the many things we get to see in Hamilton is his evolution. This song is young Hamilton, and young Hamilton was a cocky little shit. Brilliant, but cocky. We get to see him grow and change and do some really stupid stuff and seek redemption. It's fascinating to compare My Shot Hamilton vs Say No to This Hamilton vs Quiet Uptown Hamilton.

That's an excellent point. I think everything leading up to the Reynolds Papers kind of showed us his obsessive and self interested side. Then you get It's Quiet Uptown and he has to face his own shortcomings. I daresay, however, the duel and his exchanges with Burr still harken back to that massive ego, though..

@@MarcDanielPatrick Also, to add to that point above, if you think about how much trauma Hamilton went through as a kid and how so much of that would have left him feeling worthless and alone it kind of makes sense how he became a bit egotistical (or a lot!) to protect himself from those feelings of worthlessness and abandonment. He literally spent his whole life trying to prove that he was worth something.

@@MarcDanielPatrick that's absolutely true. Have you watched the documentary about the making of Hamilton? LMM really gets into his thought process and how he felt dedicated to make sure that both Hamilton and Burr were portrayed as the flawed human beings they were and not some mythical hero/villain... but both being anti-heroes in a way. Hamilton was brilliant, he knew it, and that made him cocky AF. It's also important to remember little Alexander. Unlike the other equally brilliant individuals around him as an adult, he didn't have the love and support of a family (the Schuyler sisters) or the discipline and guidance of a formal education (Burr). He survived by his wits. He was the definition of hustle and was why LMM was drawn to him as the epitome of the hip-hop story. And while we will never know for sure, it's suspected Hamilton was likely neurodivergent... possible on the spectrum, suffering from CPTSD (repeated trauma in childhood that fundamentally alters how your brain works), or intense ADHD or a combination thereof. He self identifies as a polymath that feels misunderstood and who obviously struggles to understand others motivations compared to his nearly black & white view of the world. I honestly believe if more people were honest with themselves, they'd be able to see parts of themselves in both Hamilton and Burr... but most people don't have the self-awareness to identify and own their own flaws. That in itself is its own form of intelligence. Very few people, and I believe LMM is one of them, possess high amounts of intelligence quotient (IQ), emotional quotient (EQ), and creativity quotient (CQ). Many people who score high on IQ lack elsewhere... usually EQ... as socialization has been sacrificed in the hunt for knowledge or because the brain is just wired differently. It takes great IQ and EQ to have a high enough level of self-awareness not only see one's flaws but also admit to them. I just don't think its fair to judge Hamilton too harshly. Who are we to say we wouldn't be colossally messed up if we'd witnessed our mother's death as a child, then had a family member commit suicide, and then be left to our own wits to survive by the age of what, 12? 13? Also, hindsight is always 20/20. None of us can claim to always make the best decisions in the heat of the moment.

@@tiamichele3354 I couldn't agree more! Everyone develops coping mechanisms and not all coping mechanisms are healthy. His high level of intelligence also didn't help. Without a grounding force in his childhood to guide him socially... to teach him that just because someone else doesn't see things the way we do doesn't mean they're not valid... to teach him that just because he doesn't understand why doesn't mean its wrong... I honestly can't imagine for myself where I'd be and the utter lack of social relationships I'd likely have I hadn't had a mother to guide me on being a good human, not just a smart one.

Good story telling is good story telling. I’m not a fan of rap and hip hop that’s about the same few things. I love music with a message, a story of conflict, contradictions and revelation. The layers of history, personalities, motivations, strengths and flaws all in 5 minutes would entertain me on paper. I had to hit the dictionary lol.

Yessss! He finally did My Shot! As far as Lin as a performer, he doesn’t have the strongest singing voice and while he’s a good actor, he’s not a GREAT actor. Where his talent lies (besides the writing which is obviously genius) is in his technical ability in rapping which is second only to Daveed in this show, and in his infectious enthusiasm. Even when his vocal performances aren’t the strongest he makes up for it by going all-in. His passion comes through in this entire show.

Rap is NOT my style of music, but this is the song that made me realize how fantastic the interplay and rhythm of words can come together into a song that is catchy and intense at the same time. And I get amused at young, cocky Hamilton because he reminds me of my 3 sons at that age - he knows everything and will take on the world. My Shot is not only one of my favorite songs from Hamilton, but it's one of my whole family's favorites.

I think you nailed it. I'm now reflecting back on myself at 19... thinking back to my peers at 19... male and female and everywhere on the spectrum... we were all cocky mofos who thought we would live forever and conquer the world and be the greatest generation ever and do big things... and then reality hits in your mid-late 20s... or maybe your early 30s... and all that bravado begins to dissipate. And I still see it in teenagers I know. FULL of enthusiasm and big ideas and how they're going to change the world... because the world hasn't beaten them down yet.

Norton and Emily Blunt harangue him into doing the first part of this song - unaccompanied - for the studio audience (who all laugh at the line "Britain keeps shittin' on us endlessly"). Hamilton's "arrogance" is so brilliantly connected to a common way marginalized groups take their own power back and "rise up"... literally. For those of us more privileged, it may read as egotistical and arrogant, but for many it's a way to find the internal strength to overcome the outside systemic oppression which tells them they are lesser than. And proof of it's value is in Lin Manuel Miranda's genius, and so many other successful creative legends that have shown us more than we thought was possible. Hamilton is genius because it is both a lesson on the titular character's overcoming of his own obstacles AND the true American spirit of people who have been less privileged to, against all odds, own their own power to not just be their best selves, but to better the world around them.

I saw someone (maybe Howard Ho?) mention that Hamilton's summing up of what the others said is a reference to rap and hip hop where the ability to take in what another person says and repeat it back with new words shows that the person was paying attention and also shows off their creativity.

it's also a common behavior in the neurodivergent community. It's an attempt to be relatable and show we were paying attention even if maybe we weren't making eye contact. The other thing we often do is share our own similar experience as if to say, "I've been there too and I understand" but its often misinterpreted as "trying to make everything about us" which its not. Being able to synthesize information, contextualize it, and present it in a concise form that lay people will understand is also a sign of high intelligence... a combination of all the quotients. It's a highly prized ability in modern society. It's one of many aspects that makes a good leader, a good researcher, a good journalist... the list goes on.

I saw it on Saturday after the same long wait. I was going to fly up to Sydney for it in March last year, then had to change my ticket due to restrictions, then my rescheduled performance date got cancelled and When Hamilton finally reopened in Syd, the NSW/Vic boarder was closed lol…it was definitely worth the long wait!

I'm not a huge rap fan either, but this performance captivates me for at least three reasons: First, I am astounded that any person can learn and speak so many words so quickly and for such a long time. Second, it's the power that the performance evokes for what they were doing. Finally, this song works incredibly well in the several reprises that follow later in the show.

I feel like Hamilton to Lin in our age is what Rent was to Larson in the 90's. It's redefined what musical theatre can be once again after nearly 20 years of big box musicals again. This is how I see it as an "outsider" to musical theatre anyway.

haha the reason the song is off-putting for you is the reason I love it xD how Lin captures all the grey areas of hamilton in this song is truly impressive. he spits out lines that are inspirational and mixes them with lines that are raw and honest, real. they show the complexity and contradictions of hamilton, who understood (like the other founding fathers, let's be real) that leaders needed to appear to support rebellion on pure principles, but of course were also ambitious. also it's true he was summarizing what they said, but I think the point is he did it in such an evocative manner that it was helpful to the cause, which made use of his voice to spur support.

I love this song for many reasons, one being the double meaning and foreshadowing of “throwing away his shot” in the duel with Burr. If you’re not as familiar with rap, there are also a ton of references to other rappers and musicals too. The most familiar is when he spell out his name. Notorious BIG does the same thing in “Going Back to Cali. Lin leaves a lot of Easter eggs for fans of multiple genres. “The model of a modern Major-General”, etc.

He really does! He even sneaks in theater references into this song. "Enter ME! (He says in parentheses)"... referencing stage direction. I've seen several videos breaking down all the rap references... another breaking down all the theater/musical references... half the musical is references and that's its genius and its true tie to the rap & hip-hop communities... both being well known for sampling other artists within the genre.

Also, another very important musical theater reference "you've got to be carefully taught".... Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific was often banned from many theaters because of this song that Lieutenant Cable sings to Emile Debeque regarding prejudicial attitudes. Bravo LMM.

As much as it reconceived for this presentation for the camera it would be interesting to see a theatre audience pov of how the presentation plays out looking at it as a whole rather than from the individual camera perspectives.

I don't mind the "ego" showing here, either. I read the Hamilton biography. Hamilton did have an ego, as well as a drive to improve his station, prove his worth, help the country, and end up in the history books. He also knew he was not a perfect man. But he did incredible things for this country. LMM's show helped people see the good that he did, despite his mistakes and self-destructiveness. Hamilton is appreciated now more than he was in his time, thanks to LMM.

Huh. I don't see Hamilton as "egotistical" in My Shot. I see him as the ego-battled child of bastardy and orphaned past, poverty, who's aching for a cause, a calling, a place to prove himself--who's talking frantically trying to win these firebrands. He longs for a legacy, he longs for the respect of the rebels and of history itself, but in his feelings, he's the poor little matchgirl freezing in the streets and looking in the windows of the respected, the powerful, and the brilliant, yearning to achieve that. And his only tools are his brains, his writing and speaking skills, and his passion. It's built into the same thematic material that drives the entire show: the drive of immigrants, the outcast standing of rappers, the folks at the bottom of the social and economic ladder who have no way to rise but to be "young, scrappy, and hungry." Gonna take a shot. That's not arrogance, it's a bitter humility coupled with a longing to become "more."

Ouch! I am a big Hamilton fan, it continues to captivate me, after seeing it on the 4th a few years ago. I love watching you present these songs, and share your insight. I disagree with you entirely about Lin Manuel Miranda’s performance, his singing, Hamilton’s bravado, etc.; remember, he’s 19! And full of energy ideals. I think Lin, who doesn’t have a broadway voice, does this show absolutely perfectly with his own innate enthusiasm and passion..To me it fits. If the actor in the role is polished and has an incredible voice he wouldn’t capture the character. Anyway, rock on, you are one of my favorite channels, and I don’t have many!

I thought this too until I saw Hamilton live with an actor who could sing playing Hamilton. Not being able to sing doesn't contribute at all to the character imo. It's just leeway we give Lin Manuel Miranda because of his brilliance and I think inside we are grateful for this thing he created.

Something I love about this musical is that the major characters are so complex. Hamilton is an arrogant pain in the ass, but his drive and intelligence helped make our country, and also, we see how he got this way. Burr is indecisive to a fault (I love that in the first exchange between the two, he can't even answer directly when asked his name. "Are you Aaron Burr, sir?" "That depends." BRILLIANT!) but again, we understand where he's coming from, having had such high expectations laid on him by his illustrious family. The same is true of Angelica, Washington, Jefferson; none is simple, and the production gets it all across so concisely, using words, music, direction, lighting, choreography, everything to convey these complexities. In great art, the protagonist doesn't have to be exemplary. The person Alexander Hamilton wasn't, and he isn't here. He was a deeply flawed person, brought down by a common failing (pants, unzipped) and also by arrogance and an obsessive need to prove himself. LMM's model is equal parts musical theater and Greek tragedy.

I think part of the brilliance of the writing is to take the titular character, who the audience will presume to be the ‘hero’, and beginning in the 2nd song(poor bursar), start showing egotistical cracks that will reveal themselves to be full character flaws.

We saw Hamilton when it first started touring and finally get to see it again this Sunday and are so excited for that opportunity. I think that it's important to note that the human brain doesn't stop developing until around the age of 25, and Revolutionary Hamilton was younger than that. He, like many at that age, thought of himself as invincible and had an over inflated sense of self. I feel like that would be amplified in Hamilton due to the amount of hardship and adversity he had already overcome by the time of the Revolution. I also feel like his position in the founding and establishing of the nation's central government, as well as his position as Washington's right hand man, helped to solidify his ego and sense of invincibility, and it wasn't until he "lost" Eliza did he really seem to get himself (and his ego) in check.

For me personally the thing about Hamilton being egotistical and narcissist in this song is essentially the part which helps me to understand why, despite all the things he had done or tried to do, that many people didn't like him, and why he always was in some kind of fight with other people. What made the people at the time make it so he was a lesser known founding father among others. This song really laid the foundation for that, for me at least.

Great video as always, sir! I'm always blown away when people see Hamilton as the hero of this story. He's selfish, egotistical and basically hurts most of the people surrounding him (poor Eliza and Phillip) in pursuit of his goals. He's also extremely brilliant and impactful, which is why the show shines, but calling him a hero is a stretch, I think.

The irony here is that Jefferson and company destroyed his reputation as they say in one of the numbers, and America forgot him- so outside of being on the $10 bill, it’s not like he is a major character in our early history. So much for his ascendancy.. this musical gives us a good picture and more talk about him, ego or not he had a major impact as a member of the Federalist Party.

I hadn't thought of this song as showing Hamilton in that much of a negative light. We see throughout the musical that he wants to leave a legacy, including in the previous song, "Aaron Burr, Sir," though "I amaze and astonish" does stand out in this song (yet even that is prefaced by "I probably shouldn't brag") and he does spell out his name. :) It's clear Hamilton is flawed and self-absorbed (and perhaps partly from being praised and lifted up by the people who "passed a plate around" and sent him to the States), but I see "My Shot" as excitement more than bragging, in a time when wars offered opportunities to build oneself up pridefully. I feel more and more like I'm semi-agreeing with you :) but I do really like this song for its passion.

I’ve watched several of your reactions to Hamilton performances, and I’ve noticed you mention sides and villains. This show isn’t about sides (Hamilton v. Burr). Hamilton is desperate to create a legacy. Burr is desperate to live up to expectations. Neither one has a motivation that is particularly noble. They are both flawed, and their individual flaws are directly at odds. Hamilton can’t stop telling people what he thinks, and no one knows what Burr thinks. They are almost built to aggravate each other, and their ambitions become entangled. If you judge the performances as portrayals of good vs. evil, you miss the mark. They are both villains at different moments. The show is about how legacies are formed, and how stories are passed through history. History has it’s eyes on you….🎵 Who lives, who dies, who tells your story….🎵 And when my time is up, have I done enough? Will they tell your story….🎵 Eliza removing herself from the narrative, then putting herself back in to tell Hamilton’s story after he’s gone….

Hercules is favorite of the men besides the King. I can't keep my eyes off of him. Oak is great in both roles he does but out of the American men, Hercules is my favorite.

It's interesting you think this song is about ego. It is about ego in the sense it takes a big one to go out and achieve what Hamilton did. However, when you consider the time, Hamilton wasn't trying to go viral but it's unlikely this hometown would have heard about him unless he became important through word of mouth or basic news. It was important for him to confirm what others believed of him. My shot is really about taking the most of the opportunity they all have. Right after you stopped the video to mention how you're not a fan of this song, each of the characters explains what "their shot" is. But Hamilton is also taking his "shot" at making friends, in a new country not sure if his ideas will be accepted. Look at how Burr responded. There is also the 3rd Entendre....a favorite with lyricists. This is where My shot has 3 different meanings with the same word.....the unfortunate ending of Hamilton (actually throwing away his shot). I hope you read this and maybe see a new understanding of this song. I would also suggest reading the lyrics to see if you understand all the meanings of "my shot" differently.

My Shot is a great way of showing hamilton’s egotistical side. When he was young, he had a hunger. He had nothing to live for, so he only lived for himself. And for me, that drive and motivation in his past ended up driving him through his life. In my eyes, thats why that song is repeated throughout the musical. The ego and his pride drove him till the end. Until he realized that he is losing his shot. His pride, he dueled with Burr. His shot is equivalent to his life.

Just saw the touring company where I live, 2 years after originally scheduled. Love the show beyond belief. It was life changing when I first saw it, and I have also seen the Disney original cast version too many times to count. Anyway, this was the touring company now many years after the original, and due to flu, it was an all-understudy show. Huge expenditure of money for the tix and not worth it. When you see actors not up to snuff, you realize how good Miranda really is as an actor. All but his crying. I just think he over emotes that and the green Hamilton in the touring company did those moments better. Also, my husband believes the male raps were slowed down. They must have been because even though I know the whole show by heart, it was easier to understand. Angelica, Eliza, Washington and Hercules/Madison were all quite good and I still cried my eyes out. Again, even though Miranda does not have great enunciation in some of his raps, his acting (even just pointing at the table , asking to join the others, lining up the glasses, etc) make the character more interesting. And, his egotism is part of the show and part of his downfall. I like how it appears early on. It’s real. Anyway, great video. And what you said about him distilling the lyrics/prose is so true. It’s why Hercules Mulligan/James Madison is so integral even though his part is quite small. Everything is so rich in comedy or cleverness that he stands out regardless. I was a book critic for 25 years and one thing I alway look for in a novel is how tight the writing is, whether the author takes three sentences to convey what might have been more effective in one. Clearly, I am out of practice. ☺️

Alexander is egotistical throughout the whole musical (and it seems, his real life), but I guess you're singling out this song because you're not a rap fan and because this is his big intro number. But this is exactly why Hamilton is a hip hop musical - this song - it's all about bigging yourself up, listing all your skills, talking ish about your peers. It's an underdog genre and he's an underdog so you gotta be louder about why you deserve your spot up front because, often, underdogs get only one shot, if any. As far as the character being unlikable in general, yeah, I don't like him either.
