Mom: “How dare you get angry and embarrass your golden-sister! Don’t you know how specially innocent she is? I demand you apologize to her right now and lie to everyone else that you wanted to give her the watch, but tried to make her look like she stole it!” OP: “Okay. I’m sorry that she decided to be a thief and steal my watch, and later cried about it to mommy. I’m sorry that she had been raised to be a spoiled, selfish child that will never grow up. Honestly, it being too big was my main thought. she should've asked for a gift receipt so she could get a different one. But it being too big would've been my issue. If it's not functional for me, it's useless. No matter how much it cost. And I've told this to my family before and they understand. Just like I understand when something I get them isn't useful. This is for when something is SUPPOSED to be used like the standmixer and not something decorative like a plush toy or something. I believe this for ANY electronic. The gift giver may not know what the person is looking for and should ALWAYS give a gift receipt so they could return it. Like it's not ungrateful if you know you're not going to use it at all and need something else. Computers. Game controllers. Head phones. Video Games. You can be grateful but still need something else because what they got isn't going to work for you. My mom and my sister got me the same stand mixer and they knew I was going to return one and didn't care which because what am I going to do with two stand mixers? Keep them and have one them have wasted their money? That's dumb. And I don't have room for two stand mixers.

Oh wow, the stand mixer throwaway story makes me feel so bad for the dad. My parents are very loving people and they've definitely bought me gifts that I absolutely hated. It's not hard to not be a jerk to people who are giving you things because they genuinely care about you, even if they miss the mark sometimes.

I just posted on reddit about this story, and while I think the way OP handled is a bit AHish, based on the way the parents are insisting some things, I think there is a lot more to this story. Basically what I posted on reddit about the parents are as below: "...I have a feeling this might turn into ESH down the line. Your father insisting that grey goes with everything is just odd, like he is in denial. In addition, why does your mother not stop him from picking grey, if she was supposed to know that you hate grey, since as you put it, everyone knows it? To elaborate further: 1. I seriously think your father is someone who just buy expensive gifts for the sake that they are expensive. Growing up, does your mother always get gifts from him? 2. Why is your mother so insistent that the gift was thoughtful? Just because a gift is expensive does not make it thoughtful. If she did know what your father was getting you, I think she might be expecting you hate the gift and offer it to her instead."

Story 1: I had heard the first story up to where mum was demanding the apology, but not the saga about OP paying his mum’s rent. I appreciate how Mark tracks down the updates so we get the full story😊 Also, the appropriate response to mum saying OP owes her all this money for raising him is, “You mean the support you were legally obliged provide me to avoid being charged with neglecting the child you chose to have?” Story 2: since OP hated the colour of the stand mixer so much, she could have easily made/brought a cute cover for it so the only time she had to see it was when she was actually using it. Then if dad asked why it was covered, she tells him it’s to protect it from getting dusty.

It is entirely possible to put a lot of thought into a gift and still get it wrong. One year my sister bought my mum and dad extremely thoughtful gifts. I half-assed it by just grabbing a random bird book for my mum and a book for my dad that I knew he had the ebook of but might like a physical copy. My parents were stoked with my gifts, turns out mum had been looking for that particular book for years and I just happened to pick it up. My dad loved having the physical copy of the book. They didn't really pay attention to my sister's gifts and I was really disappointed they didn't appreciate all the effort she put into them. She got a little upset at me but I told her when it came to tools, I usually only bought good ones. I said why not just give me a Sears gift card so I can pick out what I wanted. That was when Sears had really good tools. She got insulted and said that was like giving someone money which you shouldn't do. She had some thing about giving money as a present as being tacky. I don't know why she thought that. But, after that, She always got me a Sears gift card so I could choose the tools I wanted. People need to speak up and say thank you but it's not my style or whatever. Dang, that mum in the first story just really decided to change all the details to suit her personal story and preferences...just decided "oh of course he's paying my rent, and I can bully him into doing anything I want!" So glad OP is kicking her and the sister out of his life For story 2 - I mean OP could've worked with the dad to see if they could get it swapped for the black version? Maybe a little awkward, but it sounds like their relationship maybe isn't that great to begin with and it's hard to say if some of that's on OP's side or not.

Story 1: In what sort of castle/mansion/fortress is OP's mother planning to live? I live in California and not I don't pay that much rent for a two bedroom/two bathroom apartment in a pretty nice section of town. That woman is beyond insane. We can certainly see where the sister gets her sense of entitlement. And speaking of nucking futs... Story 2: OP's update only made matters worse. A friend of mine is the third owner of a Kitchen Aid mixer (it's practically heirloom because the dang things are nearly indestructible) and I've had mine for over 15 years. They do come in many different colors and are easily exchanged. Great thing is they always make sure attachments (juicers, pasta makers, meat grinders, etc.) work with earlier versions of the stand mixer. The ease with which OP not only got rid of an expensive gift and continues to defend it makes me think there's something else going on in the relationship with her father. Either that or OP doesn't have a lick of common sense. Or is just some spoiled brat. Or all of that.

Well, if OP makes enough money to drop $30K on a watch, I assume he came from money and got a job that reflects that. He doesn't really say, of course, so this could be a leap on my part, but he did say the new place would double the amount he's paying for his mom's rent now. To me, an apt that costs upwards of $2000 a month is already luxury, it sounds like his mom just tried to upgrade to an even nicer place. I hope he blocks her and the sister for good.

1. I can relate to OP. I too have a sister who is a thief, and a liar. Too bad too sad for sister getting embarrassed by stealing from OP like that. She is the one who needs to apologize and if she is embarrassed there is no one to blame but herself. Mom should be thankful that the cops weren't called and that's what Mom would hear from me. 2. OP gave away a Kitchen aide? OMG!! I'd love for someone to buy me one of those. They aren't cheap and you can get tons of different attachments for it. I would have asked to exchange it to a color I preferred instead of giving it away.

What a great example of DARVO (say it with me, guys): Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. Every schoolchild should learn how to spot this. Leave 'em both behind. Counseling only works when people are ready to admit they need help, which in this case doesn't seem to be on the table. Mother is a gaslighting narcissist and Sis has been trained to be the same. The BBQ lunch incident seals the deal. OP, don't walk, RUN.

Story 2: OP is totally spoiled to the fact that she feels entitled to other people's money and that everyone around her must know her favorite and least favorite colors and exactly what she wants at all times. She gifted another person a $700 mixer that she didn't buy so in effect she used her daddy's money to give her friend a parting gift. That's just plain disrespectful and shows that she has no gratitude for what her dad does for her. If she didn't like the gift from her dad, she could have told him and had him exchange it for one that matched her esthetics. OR she could have acknowledged that not all things will be her favorite color and she could have been overjoyed that her daddy was so thoughtful to get her the best mixer out there. OP's dad needs to stop buying her shit because I guess it's now her BF's obligation to buy her shit.

“That she feels entitled to other people’s money” except she doesn’t, that was never even partially showed, While yes she is in the wrong for giving away the gift i can see her thought process for how, “Im not going to use this, so i should give it to someone who will”, Nor did she “use daddy’s money to give her friend a parting gift”, though she didn’t buy it herself, it was a gift I personally believe it to be a bad mindset to view a gift as “x’s money” and not “x’s gift”

S2-thats so wild how she decided to handle the situation. First by not considering her dads feelings when she did the ol indiana jones swap on his gift, but then by tearing him down and not showing a shred of remorse or even sympathy when he was hurt. I hate getting clothes as a gift because 1. no one knows my sizes 2. I dont wear anything i dont like and 3. I feel terrible not using/wearing a gift someone put thought into. I made it very clear at a young age to PLEASE (key word “please”) not get me any clothes from then on because the thought would be lost on me and they would spend years in a drawer with the tags still on and me too big to wear them before inevitably donating or selling it. They were defensive at first, but after i elaborated they agreed that it would be a waste of money and that if they were unsure, they could always just gift the money/come with me to buy clothes that actually fit/would wear, to which i agreed. It might be uncomfortable to say, but its definitely easier than dealing with whatever fucked up shit she got in her head that made her say THAT to her dad

Not going to lie, when Mark was reading the first part of Story 1, I thought to myself that the reason the mother was asking for the apology was that she thought that OP's sister was right to steal a 30K$ watch. story 1: nta but wtf i'd never buy something like a watch for 30k story 2: this is iffy. it was a gift since you didn't ask for it. but i hope you're not expecting a different one after giving it away [as in a 700$ one] edit to add: mark was right, you could have asked for a recite to exchange it. but i also felt that resentment too. story time: in my teen years i hated the color pink, it was my least favorite. you know what my grandmother did? told my step mom and dad [ who i didn't live with at the time] that i loved everything pink. so my step mom wasted her time on making me a pink blanket. i felt grateful but never told her i hated the color until the time came to move in with them and i didn't grab that blanket. i felt bad cause i hated it. dad also got me a pink ipod with pink headphones. i used that cause i could just not look at the color. that ipod is the old one with no screen. it had been dropped into the washer 2 times, the dryer 1 time and STILL works. i got this thing in 2009. i'm so damn shocked at how it has lived this long. i still hate the color pink but not as much.
