I rotate prescription tretinoin and tazarotene. My skin tolerates both well by cleansing, moisturizing, then waiting about 30 minutes before applying either retinoid. I'm in my mid-fifties, yet my skin looks far younger. It's worth the journey!

That's amazing! I wanted to ask what lead you to rotate them as most use one or the other? I already use Tret so I'm interested in learning more about Tazarotene x

@@oreos888 I had worked my way up to .1% tretinoin with great results, but was plateauing. My derm suggested incorporating tazarotene ( I can't recall if she said it was more potent or just different so my skin might respond more). She also suggested slowly onboarding the tazarotene so as to not over-shock my skin and get the irritatiion & peeling. I started using it 1 or twice per week, then worked by way up to every other day. Seems efficacious, so far. Good luck!

Dr. K, Thanks for this video and the tip for lower Tret but more frequent use! Can you comment on korean skin care, for example the use of snail serum. I am careful about ingredients (formulation is also important), and have noticed beta glucan and other beneficial ingredients (HA, tumeric, caffeine) in some korean skin care lines. I used the snail serum and noticed a change in my skin appearing more tought. There is also the Black Tea Time Reverse Eyecream by Pyunkang Yui (I know green tea is good here). I am also using their six peptide serum (it is very viscous) as a first layer, including under my eyes before I apply your MDAire ECM Eye Serum. As a credit to you, only your line has polypodium leucotomos, and I will start that as an oral supplement. I think that CoQ10 is important in skin care, you mentioned it in oral form in one video, and I have been using that in my skin care for years, what do you think? By the way! Because of you, I recently did my first Fraxel and Thermage... the results are incredible albeit the setting was so high on the Fraxel, the pain was earth shattering and i had lots of dead skin - who cares! - when it fell off, so did five years of aging!!! Products: Alastin necter is a knock out but too expensive, but i had to use it after the very intense fraxel I had as my skin could not even be touched. I noticed an immediate positive effect from Faded topicals brightening/clearing serum when tested on my hand. It removed fine lines, even one day later compared to my other hand!!! Once a week use is recommended initially, so I just started using it on my face last night (from you i learned the skin on the face/eyes is certainly different). Will keep you posted on this product but it seems excellent so far.

I'm 40 and can't use tretenoin. I tried for over 3 years. My skin could never acclimate. Whenever I tried putting sunscreen or foundation on, my skin flaked. My skin never felt soft an supple. I still wore my daily sunscreen, but I disliked how it didn't go on smoothly. I've tried multiple types of moisturizers, including adding oils. I tried reducing the strength, I tried taking a month off and starting over. I tried reducing it to only 2-3 days a week. I tried the "sandwich method". About 2 weeks ago I stopped and I don't think I'll be going back. I still have lots of breakouts, which is my biggest struggle right now.

Thank you for sharing. I have to admit I was thinking about stopping tret because I’ve heard other dermatologists say that it can do damage with long term use. But they are also selling alternative products! Thanks got setting me straight❤❤

Not trying to answer for the doc. But she did say in this video it’s better to use the lower dose on a regular basis (daily), than it is to use a higher dose less often (3 times a week). Consistency is always key. What I did to increase my percentage, was use my lower dose daily. But once a week I would switch to the higher dose for that day only. Then when I saw I tolerated that, I would do that two times a week and so on. I was able to increase my dose that way without irritation. But it is a process, it took 2 months to completely stop the lower dose. Hope that helps.

Just a comment on the last section on retinoid alternatives, specifically at 19:07 you ask, "What's the point?" There are other reasons for not using retinoids other than avoiding irritation (like pregnancy). The point is NOT "are these alternatives as good as retinoids?", but the point is what are alternatives that are safe for those who cannot use retinoids. I am not looking to replace retinoids forever, I just need a 9 month alternative! What did you do during your pregnancies? I was also turned down for IPL and Fraxel while pregnant.

They probably can. I used to not be able to handle baby lotion. The first of this year I went on a health kick and after I hit a few milestones I started trying products and my skin can handle everything I've thrown at it now. Realistically our skin and underlying tissues are indicators of our underlying health conditions. You're almost doing yourself a disservice if you mask those indicators with use of topical products. Cut sugar, carbs, junk out of your diet. Get adequate daily protein (most of us don't). Fast and exercise. These are all proven to improve health and longevity. Cater to all your bodies systems and it will show in your skin. After 3 months people said I looked 10 to 15 years younger. After I started experimenting with topical products. I actually probably look more my age instead of prematurely aged now.
