I am a skydiver, and I write this message just to say that the fear of height simply doesn't exist during the skydive. When you off the ground (mountain, ladder, balcony) whatever, your brain will try to calculate it's distance from the ground. That phenomena lead to the fear of height for some people. But in order to do that, the brain need's a terrestrial reference (mountain, buildings) etc... That terrestrial reference obviously is on the ground. In other words, for the brain to be able to make that process, we need to be on element somehow connected to the ground. Because during a skydive, we aren't connected to any grounded elements, there are no distance calculations made by your brain => so no fear of heights. Hope I was clear here, I am not perfectly fluent in English :)

Not true for me. I still understand what 4000m is and how far away it is from the ground, I don't need references like tree or building to understand this. The only things that remove the fear is 2 parachutes behind my back.

I finally did it! I'm very afraid of heights and get motion sickness. But skydiving is nothing like it. it's like you are floating on a water mattress. Just go do it. There's no reference point for you to feel like you are falling. It'ss not scary at all. Go ahead. Do it.

Yep, had my first one a few months ago. It didn't hit me until we were dangling our legs off the plane. The scariest part was jumping and doing a flip because you feel the acceleration. But after that, just take in the sights. Not sure if all instructors do the flip in the beginning. Amazing experience.

@georgejacob31625 жыл бұрын
Mango. Not all instructors do the flip. I did my first jump from 10,000ft last September at the age of 45 and the instructor did not flip but that may have been due to the staff informing him that I was very nervous and just to give me a 'basic' skydive if there is such a thing! I did my second jump today from 15,000ft and I got the full works! I got flipped out of the aircraft, the instructor then did free-fall spins and then the instructor gave me control of the parachute and we did flat spins under canopy! All very marvellous!

Your description is exactly correct. When they open the door, the shit gets real. But the night before is really the scariest part.

True. I didn't sleep much. Was too excited but so worth it. I didn't hesitate, and I can't wait to take advanced classes and have the opportunity to jump by myself. I totally thought that skydiving was different. I thought that you would feel your stomach drop for the whole way down. I hate that feeling personally, but now that you have described it, I feel like skydiving is much more of an option for me now. Thanks for this video! I probably would not have considered skydiving, but now that I now what you feel like during the fall, it seem super fun!
@georgejacob31624 жыл бұрын
If you haven't done a skydive already then may I suggest you try Indoor Skydiving first? You just walk into the wind chamber with an instructor. You then 'skydive' at about chest/head height. You get the feel of a free-fall without falling! I did Indoor Skydiving before I did a proper skydive and I think it helped me to prepare for the proper skydive in some way. During the proper skydive once you are at top speed and can fall no faster it simply feels as though you are floating on a bed of air. It's BLISS!
@andrewparker3184 жыл бұрын
Its interesting because you would feel that if Earth didn't have an atmosphere. During a free fall without air, you are completely weightless which is what creates that sensation that your stomach has dropped. You would keep falling faster and faster, accelerating towards the ground at 9.8 meters per second squared. However due to air resistance during a skydive, you began to slow down during your descant. At this point you began to feel heavy again, as you start resisting Earth's gravitational pull from drag produced by the atmosphere. Eventually you reach a point called terminal velocity, in which the drag from the air is so strong that you can't fall any faster. For a human, this happens at about 120 miles per hour. Because you are no longer accelerating, you feel your full body weight again, and it simply feels like you are being suspended in the air by a giant fan. This is why zero g planes have to accelerate towards the ground in order to create artificial weightlessness, fallowing a trajectory that would match what happen if you were falling in a vacuum.
@kaitieyesorgen46304 жыл бұрын
ACTUALLY! There is a reason that you dont feel the stomach drop! When on a rollercoaster you are going straight down, however, on a skydive you actually go down at an angle. That angle is what nullifies the feeling of the stomach drop! Jumping from a hot air balloon or a helicopter DOES give the stomach drop, since you go straight down
@georgejacob31624 жыл бұрын
Kaitiey Esorgan. That is correct. Due to the forward motion of the plane you do not fall straight down.

Ryan Wagner you can do it!!! :) if you're really worried, try out indoor skydiving first! The free fall feels the exact same as indoor.. but better!
@ryanwagner91657 жыл бұрын
Sarah Tran I started looking into indoor! Was it nerve racking taking the initial jump out of the plane?
@georgejacob31625 жыл бұрын
Ryan Wagner. I recommend Indoor Skydiving first to get the feel for skydiving. I got the mad idea to a skydive in my head in July and it just would not go away to the point that it was driving me mad! I tried Indoor first to see if I could get the idea out of my head. It didn't get the idea out of my head even though I didn't really enjoy my first Indoor Skydiving experience. I went a second time and enjoyed it more this time and then did my first proper jump last month and THOROUGHLY enjoyed THAT! I was proper scared before my 10,000ft skydive and delayed getting in the plane but from taking off in the plane to landing on the ground I was totally relaxed throughout. Maybe the Indoor Skydiving helped or maybe I just ran out of 'scared' before doing the jump! In the plane I made a conscious decision to relax my shoulders, keep smiling (very important) and sit upright. I was so relaxed that falling out of the plane felt like the easiest thing in the world! Upon landing I was like 'What was I worried about?' This month I did a wing-walk... That is more like a rollercoaster! A rollercoaster without rails!

Thanks for your skydiving videos. They helped me out a lot in preparation for my jump on October 17th, 2021. I didn't feel the stomach drop or falling sensation at all. Not at the plane exit or freefall. I had more stomach drop on the turbulence from the plane ride. Freefall felt like I was floating on a huge bed of wind. It was very smooth and full of adrenaline. The fear of heights wasn't there because I was so far away from the ground. The thought of skydiving was more frightening than the actual event.

Edit: my skydive was incredible today. I never once felt nervous or like it was a roller coaster. My instructor did a few spins for fun. He asked me if we could and I was on board. I didn’t actually feel dizzy at all and it didn’t jerk your body in the way a roller coaster does. The worst part was that my ears were clogged once I landed and I had to pop them. Which that wasn’t even bad lol

This is a great description of a tandem jump (except you don't "shoot up" when you deploy the canopy, you just slow down the fall ;) )! That sense of total awareness, or inability to get distracted or whatever you wanna call it during the free fall is what I love most with jumping. I've done over a thousand jumps, and I still cannot think of anything other than the situation I'm in when I'm in free fall. Everyone should try it!
@sarahhtran8 жыл бұрын
Akegata42 ah!!!! I'm so jelly you're a certified skydiver! Hopefully one day that's something I can do :) thank you for your input and sharing your perspective of skydiving! :) over a 1000 jumps that sounds insane!!
@jm08a317 жыл бұрын
Akegata42 you do shoot up a little, then you start falling again.
@Akegata427 жыл бұрын
KingOf TheCreepers: I think you've misunderstood how gravity works. You most certainly never go up while deploying your parachute. The only reason people think that is because the camera jumpers filming tandems keep falling at terminal velocity while the tandem instructor deploys (thus lowering his/her fall rate).
@50buttfish3 жыл бұрын
It feels like a nice soft bed, with wind pressure; and gazing at the horizon makes you feel like you are floating, looking down makes the ground RUSH up at you. It's only an anxiety prior to the jump, once you are floating ever FEAR leaves your mind. Up, until you pull the chute, then you worry about the chute opening, and if it doesn't will the reserve work. Enjoy the ride, forget the small stuff.

Me & a group of my friends from work are all going next month. The closer that it gets the more nervous I become, But I've wanted to do this for longest time & now listening to your testimony, I feel alot better about the whole thing.. definitely still nervous & probably gonna freak out when the plane door opens lol. But I'm going to make myself do it.

Just did my first tandem dive today at 15k feet. For some reason I didn't feel nervous at all, even to the point that I was sat on the edge of the plane door, I was just really looking forward to finally doing it. You hit the nail on the head though, the first few seconds feel a bit weird as you get on to your stomach and then in freefall you just don't give a fk. You forget about everything for 60 seconds and it's simply amazing, then you get to enjoy such an amazing view that like you say, you just don't experience in a plane.

Nothing like a rollercoaster. Once you're out of the plane it feels like you are floating on a bed of air. Try Indoor Skydiving and you will get a similar feeling in the wind chamber.

George Jacob Do YOUR ears hurt when you are done? Cause my ears were FUCKING killing me!!! In the end, it was worth it!! Skydiving, I want to jump at LEAST 10,000 times more!!!!!
@georgejacob31625 жыл бұрын
Luis Gutierrez. I've seen a lot of videos of people who complain about their ears/hearing after skydiving. Mine didn't hurt because the skydive team provided ear plugs. Not only that but I don't clean my ears out often because I feel that the earwax provides a natural protective barrier against loud noise and (in the case of skydiving) windrush. My hearing is already damaged from when I did clean my ears out and go to loud music concerts with no ear plugs so I know how you feel after skydiving! Whenever I go Indoor Skydiving again the company provides ear plugs as that indoor wind fan is LOUD! But yes 10,000 times! That sounds good to me! I certainly want to do more! I wish that I had done this 20+ years ago cos I would have done loads more jumps by now! One of the instructors at my local airfield is in his 50's and he has done over 23,000 jumps!

As a skydiver, to people who did a tandem and loved it I would say try AFF level 1. It's the next step. It's like somebody who never drove a car before and wanting to try it and instead takes a bus and for most that's sufficient. Tandem is like taking the bus, AFF level 1 is like driving a car (with a person guiding you in the drivers seat).
