Swapped the standard 833 4-speed out for an 833OD box.
The burning question is: Did Chrysler call it called a “3-speed with overdrive” or did they call it a “4-speed overdrive”???

I've been watching KZbin for 15 years and don't have cable. Rarely do I comment on any videos, but this car is worth it. What an absolutely perfect build. Understated perfection. I would LOVE to drive this car slowly someday. Great work, Rod!

Due to the torque and low geared rear end, that Slant Six sounds perfectly happy with the gear spacing. The best of both worlds. NICE!

Was given a '76 Valiant sedan that was produced very near the end of production. The original owner made me promise to not cut it up or flip it. It's a bottom-basement "Custom" version, but has HD cooling, 120 mph speedo, A51 package (swaybars, 340 torsion bars, HD leaf springs), map light, 318,SG 8.25 rear with 2.76 gears, passenger door mirror, vinyl top... It is super clean, until I pulled the valve covers I doubted the mileage, thinking it had 100 or 200k more, just clean. Nope. It was parked in the 80's with a leaking heater core & leak at the top tank/core. It is being changed up. Bigger brakes, back braced 8.75 (have 3.23 & 3.55 489 case gears) rear with Doc Diff discs. Powertrain? 340 & an iron case OD A-833...it's all stuff I have & makes it more drivable. The car is used for DD and vintage events-

my '76 duster came from the factory with a slant 6, iron case A833OD and 3.23's....love it. to me it's happy cruising speed is about 65 mph.... doing a disc brake BBP swap this winter (build date is 11/75, so it still has 4 wheel drums and 5x4 BP), actually looking at options for the rear, thinking of going to a Ford Ranger rear with 3.08's, which should make a great 70-72mph cruising speed.

I LOVE your little car! In the early 80s my girlfriend’s mom had a slant six 71 Duster we drove. I loved it. There’s something about the smooth pull of a good-running inline that just satisfies! As an avid Mopar builder & racer throughout the 80’s & 90’s I always said I was going to build a 225; just never got to it. (I can tell by the Moabs we have similar tastes!)

I have always wanted a Feather Duster. I had an 85 Ram van with a slant 6 and 833OD. It was a great truck. With 3.90 gears in the rear, that slant had plenty of torque to move that van around well. It would run out of breath on the highway though. It was happy at about 60-63 but would go 68 on a flat and about 72 downhill.

That is awesome, but it would be great to see it running on the highway. Love seeing you work that manual steering and manual shift! As much as I loved all my Valiants and Darts, they really wound out on the highway, so overdrive would be most welcome.

I have a (formerly /6) '85 D-100 fleetside shorty with a modified 318, and the original A833-O/D. I had a stock 318 with a 360-2bbl camshaft and headers in it for 16yrs and it was damn near perfect, with the 3.55 gears. I stuck the current 318 (328") in there back in 2009 and it has about 300hp but is a little more peaky than the original one. The gear drop on the 1-2 shift is more noticeable now, plus I went to taller tires and a 3.21 Sure Grip, so I use O/D later in the speed range also. Love the Dart!

I think what you’ve done is exceptional. Eons ago I had a 63-1/2 Ford Falcon Futura with a wimpy 170 c.i. 6 and a 3-on-the-tree with non-synchro 1st gear. Underpowered and not able to downshift to 1st meant a lot of slipping the clutch in 2nd. I’m sure a synchromesh 3 speed or 4 speed would have helped the drivability tremendously. I truly liked that car and I did master the underpowered engine and transmission. But what you’ve done is take it up several more levels. Chrysler slant 6’s were better anywhere due to their longer stroke

What is your freeway speed at that RPM and what size tires you running? I got a four door '74 Dart with the same engine and rear (2.76 gear set though). I'm taking a LOT of time to carefully build this car as a DD and nothing else. I already got my plan of how I'll build the engine. Should be about 180-200HP. Maybe a tad more. Keeping the old 14in wheels and 7.25 rear end. Plan to use 205/70-14 tires. I'm also doing what was done to the Dart Lite's and more to shed weight. Now it's the transmission and rear axle gear set struggle. I love a standard and the aluminum case A833OD looks to be my cheapest and easiest bet. I feel like the 3.55's with that transmission will help MPG in town and the jump between gears. The issue is that at the 80MPH typically ran on the freeway with this set up where I'm at, I'll be at about 3,000RPM. With an OD unit with a .78 ratio, the fourth gear split would come out to be a .57 ratio. That would put me at about 2,300RPM. I'm building the engine to make low end power because I wanna run low RPM's on the freeway with the least amount of throttle possible to save fuel and reducing RPM's will reduce wear on the engine.

Sounds like you have a good plan so far… especially having a specific, stated purpose as a DD. It sounds like you are building a refined version of a Feather-Duster 👍🏼. Some of the following is my opinion, but at least it’s based on my 1st hand experience. Also, I’m going to use some rounded, general numbers, but they all will be close. If I were you I would build your car and leave for 2.76 gear in it for now and see what you end up with. You can always change that after the main driveline is complete. I think if you aim for 180HP (be careful to select a cam that keeps the cylinder pressure up for low-end torque), use an 833OD, the 2.76 gear and your 25” tires you should end up at about 2300rpm @ 80mph. My setup is 3:55 and 26” rear tires (225/70/14) and I’m at 2300rpm @ 70mph. Where I live 70mph is adequate on the highway to not be “in the way”. With your 1” shorter tire and 10mph faster needed speed… your 2.76’s are “equal” to my 3:55’s. When I had the regular 833 in it I was near 3500rpm to keep up with right lane traffic. 3500rpm is miserable as a daily-driver. (My opinion)

Looking at your other videos,... this is the '66 Dodge? I have a '66 "VC Valiant", the RHD version of the '66 Plymouth, our earlier local Valiants used the 803 3-speed, with a level system that passed the linkages under the extension housing to come up through the floor on the right hand side of the gearbox,. Do the 833's have the same linkages as the 803? I have a modern 5-speed to adapt, but something about sticking with the era-correct hardware has stuck with me. I've got a 3.23 rear end, though the RPM vs Road-speed for the 5-speed I have, would match the stock first thru third gear numbers if I swap out to a 2.92 rear end.
@RodLininski
@RodLininski Жыл бұрын
I don’t know anything about export models, sorry. The 833 has 3 levers, thus 3 shift rods and the shifter has 3 gates. Domestic Dodge’s and Plymouth’s used the A-230 3-speed. Good luck with your project.

Back when Dusters were new a lot of guys would make off with the 833OD out of a wreck and stick em' into earlier cars, just like you've done. Worked well on the /6s but a 340 or bigger engine would waste the OD trans in no time. There was no way to get better mileage on the high performance engines as the 70s went on, other than park em'. Great swap for your leaning tower of power though. Sure wish we'd have 6 speed gearboxes and OD automatics back then.
