I'm surprised to hear you say this because Sony used to be a very high end company that made good stuff. I noticed the quality going down in the late 90's but in the 80's they were considered one of the better brands.

I like the T4P P-mount concept a lot. It makes things so much simpler in many ways but it tends to limit you to just a few carts these days. This table works great for the way I listen to records. I can put an LP on and close the lid and let it play and it will take care of itself if I should get distracted before the side is over. My next TT will probably be a Pro-Ject Carbon and that is as manual as it gets... Hopefully, this one will keep going until then and I can have them both setup. :)

I had a Pioneer Linear Tracking Turntable and really liked the way it operated. The only "flaw" I could find was in changing from one stylus to another (conical vs. elliptical, depending on the wear of the record). So I eventually gave it to a friend and bought a pair of Pioneer PL-112D's (separate purchases)that would allow me to have better control of the type of cartridges I wanted to use, again depending on the records being played. I have hundreds of records in my collection, many from friends that really did not care for them as they should have, and that's why I needed the option for heavier tracking and stylus changes which is simply a matter of swapping head shells. Bottom line, I would never criticize a Linear Tracking Turntable because it does for those that have no need to play records as I do just what they want it to do and produces good quality sound with very light wear on the vinyl but there are just some times when you have to go "outside the box".

After watching this video (great vid btw), I was lucky enough today, to find on ebay, a PSLX510 linear turntable. The person has had it years, and only used it once, as he had no real vinyl collection when he bought his component system. At the time Vinyl was on the way out and CD's were the thing. Anyway.. it should be here in the next five days or so. It looks brand new in the photos. Still has the cartridge cover on it as well. I think I may have scored a good deal at $90.00. Looking forward in hearing my 180g remastered Beatles stuff on this thing. Thanks again for the video. Maybe i'll post one as well when I get this in :)

Inner groove distortion is primarily caused by the reduced linear speed of the smaller diameter grooves. If you use Stevenson's null points to align the cartridge, the tracking angle error is zero at the last groove. The main drawback of motor driven arms, is that the motor does not operate continually. A sensor detects a preset level of arm deflection, then activates the motor briefly to move the arm sled. There needs to be some play in the system so it can handle off-center records.

I was about to say, there are a few, but I don't know how well they would work - there is something to be said about the pmount on a machine that expects a certain amount of weight, etc... I did have a Linear from DAK! that was ok, it had a electronic eye on the tonearm that would scan the record and figure out how big it was that way, and also be able to detect the lands so you can just hit forward and it would go to the next track - you could even program a sequence.

There were some more upscale Japanese motor driven linear arm turntables like the Yamaha PX-1, PX-2, and PX-3, the Pioneer PL-L1000, the Technics SL-M3, and of course Sony's own PS-X555ES and PS-X800.with the infamous Biotracer arms.

Another nice video JC! :) But considering all the small eccentricities of such TT, and considering that IGD in a conventional TT is almost a non-issue (in most cases), would you say that buying one of these machines is a safe bet? Or to put it another way, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? Oh, during the video, for just a moment, i tought that finally you were going to put some music for us to hear but: "oh no, his not.." :D

I had a Marantz Linear tracking turntable but I then hit on a problem because of the fact the thing started up all by itself apparently I had hit the play/cut without knowing, there is a really good turntable that doesn't require a needle as the record is red by 5 lasers two read the groove two locate the lands either side of the groove and one to get the thickness of the record and if you are wondering who makes such a unit then look up ELP laser turntable but records have to be extremely clean before playing.

"Riding on the horn" sometimes happens with my PS-X600 Biotracer, and it's not a linear tracker. I have set the tracking force and anti-skating to the correct ranges for the cartridge (Ortofon X5-MC) and I have adjusted the tracking angle to a Stevenson protractor.

It does have a problem though. For some reason Dual located the circuit boards right below the platter where the cartridge goes across a record. This is known to cause hum and other electrical interference on the sound, but it does depend on the installed cartridge. Some are more sensitive, apparently Grados don't mix well with the CS5000 but I have no personal experience of either.

I have a PS-LX520, which has a similar mechanism. Came w/ a nice Pickering cartridge, which sounded great, until the right channel died. Now it's got the same AT3482P, fitted w/ the elliptical stylus. And I had to replace the tonearm belt because it was "sticking" @ about the middle of the record.

Oh, the ideal resonance for any tonearm is 8-12Hz. Any higher than that and it will start messing with the bass frequencies on the record, any lower and problems with footsteps etc. will easily start appearing.

Hi Joe. Another great video but I will differ with you on some aspects. I have a Technics SL-10 that has every feature you described here as well as an aluminum case which gives the unit a great degree of stability with the increased mass of the unit. It also has a switch on the back that will allow the use of a MC cartridge with a standard phono input. Lastly, it will play standing on it's end or any angle between vertical and horizontal. It isn't close to perfect for me. (comment 1)

Joe....with regard to not being able to use a tracking force gauge. I have this exact same table, and I was able to use my tracking force gauge by removing the platter mat. That created just enough space for the tonearm to set down on the little black dot in the center of the tracking force gauge that I use (it's a digital/electronic gauge). Using that sliding little weight on the tonearm, I can really fine-tune and zero in on precise tracking force, which is necessary because not all Pmounts weigh the same. Some are 5.9 grams, some are 6 grams, and there are deviations in both directions. And of course, different styli are used. For a Pmount with a conical stylus, I track it at the max (1.5 gm). For most others, I use 1.4 gm.
@EzeeLinux
@EzeeLinux 11 жыл бұрын
I tried the same thing but still couldn't get an accurate reading. We must have slightly different gauges. However, I figured out that if I weighed the cartridge and stylus combination I wanted to use I could come up with an approximate idea of where to slide the weight for whatever tracking force I was going for. That allowed me to put a modern AT120E nude diamond .3 x .7 elliptical stylus on the ATU12E2 cartridge that came with the table. With the slider in the middle, the tracking force is right around 1.6 grams... Perfect for the AT120E! It turned out to be a very good fit and the tracking performance even with super high modulation records is better than what I was getting with the same stylus on a standard arm using the original AT120 body. This is, by far, the best sounding, least resonant, quietest and most accurate turntable I've owned. I'm considering upgrading to an Ortofon high output moving coil cartridge at some point but I'm very happy with what I'm getting now. :)

Joe Collins Hey Joe....yeah I think we have different gauges, but I'm glad you came up with a solution to get an accurate reading! I would also love to have the Ortofon HOMC Pmount...the only one available is the X1MC, and the LPGear price isn't too bad at $175. However, I'm very happy with the Pmounts I currently have. And I agree with you re. the PS-LX55 II.....I love this table and am currently using it in my modest bedroom system.....Cambridge Audio integrated amp; Pro-Ject Phono Box phono preamp; Tannoy Mercury speakers; Emotiva speaker cable.

Pt2: However, if you listened on headphones you could hear the gears on the arm move the thing along, very low, but a grinding sound, none the less. The real downside is speed of getting a record on and off, as well ascomplexity - I prefer nothing automatic (I disconnected the auto return on my table and noticed a big diference in sonics), just so I can hear locked grooves and worry about an automatic return scratching a record (it has happened). However, they are neat and sound pretty good!

Let's put i this way, if you want to pick one and play with it, then go for it. The audio is shockingly clean, though. Their eccentricities do get in the way sometimes. There's a lot of different ideas out there now about what makes a great turntable. I'm not sure which is best.

Plastic or not, the Sony is very well isolated and extremely quiet. Still, I see you point and it makes one wonder what it would be like if the idea were carried over to a really well made TT with a solid plinth. The technology was sort of abandoned after CD took over. :)

Cool. For a few years I had an Eminent Technology ET2 air bearing linear arm, which doesn't use a motor to move the arm, it's just built to have near-zero friction. The biggest drawback is that the lateral effective mass is much larger than the vertical effective mass. This is a similar situation to the Clearaudio non-powered wheeled sled arms, so Clearaudio designs their cartridges with a stiff lateral suspension to deal with this.
@EzeeLinux
@EzeeLinux 11 жыл бұрын
It does fine. I used to be a big fan of Sony stuff but in the late 90's they got to a point where you'd buy something and it would just up and quit after a while and reaping it usually cost more than buying a new one. I call it Sonyitis. Let's see how long this one lasts. :)

How sensitive is it? If I put a record on this one that is even just slightly opaque, it doesn't know it's there.
@EzeeLinux
@EzeeLinux 11 жыл бұрын
Could be. I know Onkyo had one that was identical to the 2100 inside. The 2100 is a nice unit but very complicated and intricate inside. If something goes out of whack with the tone arm mechanism, there's almost no way of putting it right. The screws for adjusting the drop and lift points are made of brittle plastic and will sheer off quite easily. If they do, the turntable is toast. Don't mess with it unless you have to and be very careful. That's how I killed mine.

Nice one! I have something similar ... AU/RA G1 ... it's pretty interesting piece of gear... really a minimalistic design - it has tonearm even shorter than your PSLX55 and doesn't have any motor moving the tonearm... it has half inch mount, currently I have AT120e there ... it came with Ortophone OMB-5 or something similar...

My Denon DP-47F detects record size in the same way. It has two sets of slots in the platter and the mat. The slots in the mat are designed with nubs that line the mat up correctly.
@gotham61
@gotham61 11 жыл бұрын
With simple tools and assuming the arm lets you adjust the cartridge overhang and (to a small degree) offset angle, any nine inch arm can be aligned correctly to Baerwald, Loefgren b, or Stevenson specs resulting in a maximum tracking angle error of about two percent. This does however require very precise alignment, and an error of as little as a half millimeter will throw these numbers out the window. Baerwald keeps the error below 1 percent over all but the first half inch or so of the record

Also, I had that same record size sensing system in my Sony PS-LX3, with the same problems regarding transparent records. I usually just put my thumb in front of the light and hit the start button. Problem solved. With very little practice you could even choose between 7" and 12" records.

For clear vinyl, the answer is to turn the mat through 180° so both sensors are covered and if you want 10" or 7" record you have to do it manually.

(comment 2) I installed an NOS Digitrac special elliptical cart which sounds pretty good BUT I always come back to either my Denon DP 1200 or DP 60L for serious listening (both pivital). The physics surrounding the linear trackers is awesome but for some reason, I prefer the sound of my pivitals better. IMO No one did direct drive as well as Denon and Technics even though the specs of your Sony are quite impressive. It was definitely a nice purchase but close to perfect?? I don't know.

These came with Sony's own ND-250G cartridge (which sound great btw). You can still get styli for it; XL-250G model, and they connect so you don't need to remove the cartridge. True. Still, any misalignment will really make IDG pronounced. In a tangential system, that part of the problem is eliminated. It's astonishing how distortion free the over all sound coming from this table is. With a well cut record, it's very hard to tell what cut you're on just by listening. :)

Sony was considered better than most at that time and was in many ways... I became disenchanted with them in the late 90's, though. They build these really great looking and sounding machines that would just stop working for no reason. I started calling it Sonyitis. I can not think of any other kind of linkage for linear tracking better than belt. Gearing would require some kind of slip clutching whether it was worm or not. Seems like linear would be the preferred way after significant advances had occurred in turntable design, because as you say that is the way lacquer masters are cut on lathes. If cost was still an issue then of course arc tracking would be kept available. CD players and laser turntables use linear tracking, however hard dives do not.

Joe thanks for the video. I'm looking for a linear tracking TT like this. If you know of a good source at a reasonable price. Thanks Robert

Just keep an eye on eBay. They pop up every now and then. I don't have this anymore and I'm currently running an Audio-Technica LP5. Wonderful sounding machine. :)

@@EzeeLinux Thanks so much for responding. More history in audio goes back a way now, at 65 I'm old enough to have played my Beatle Albums on a AM-FM Stereo turntable which is pure crap. I started with my own gear in 1980 and it only got better. But I did have a B&O 4002 which was a great TT. I will watch Ebay and Craigslist, as so far they have both provided juicy toys. Nice turntable, I would be too inpatient with it though, seems like the transport just too slow, nevertheless it looks to be in great condition.

You want an Audio-Technica AT92ECD... They cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $25 and they're very easy to install... Amazon is a good place to look. :)

There's no such thing as the perfect turntable... The ELP is interesting but complicated, very expensive and can't play anything other than black vinyl. You also have to make sure the records are super squeaky clean or they sound crackly. My S shaped tone arm does about as good a job as the Sony. Still, it's a neat idea. :)

Whats bad about the auto speed is if you have 45rpm 12 inch records.

What i ment to say was the auto size. Also i had one with that and it would not play some of my color vinyl, just the ones that are clear

i have this wonderful machine, and it`s simply fantastic, has easily become my fav TT, you can overcome this little inconvenient with transparent discs by placing under it a round sheet of black paper witch will cover the light sensor paths this way "convincing" the machine that a disc is present

I bet your Sony is just as complex inside as the Realistic, they all need looking after to keep them playing but i quite enjoy pitting my witts against the belts and pulleys and blobs of solidified grease in these mechanical marvels.

I used to have Realistic linear tracking Turntable years ago and I loved it! Until the motor went bye bye and the Radio shack guy would not send it in for repairs because he kept saying lp`s were obsolete.

all I can say is that sony should never have been in business vcr's crappy , cd players crappy tv's ok and audio and portable audio is horrible . I had two of these and are a rip off when you need to have it fixed it is a major expense I had two for 5 months and the direct drive motors died and the belt to the tonearm snapped sony is garbage . the only thing I like about the company is there designs but that is all but if you like it enjoy at least you had a working turntable nice posting
